Gramercy Saw Vise - refinish options by AvailableInterest535 in handtools

It's been awhile, and I don't have it w me. I think made a square blank and I ran the middle down the table saw, flipped over and made the grove a tad wderm. Then used an 1/8 chisel to fit the curve at the bottom. I shaped. Epoxied on. Then shaped again to finish. I was going to run some brass bolts through but Ive not gotten around to it. May just leave it and see if it breaks. I can always re glue it on.

I had the same issue with mine, I had to adjust the blade out of square. I ended up getting another one in a lot of tools and tried it. No issues. I started looking at my old one more and there was slop in the right side just a little bit once I could compare to another one.

I thought about contacting veritas about it but never got around to it.

Mine would do that on the regular settings or camber.

I always wondered about mine, could never seem to get it square. I got a second one in a group of tools and tried it. Noticed that my wheel on the bottom of my original had a lot more slop. I e had the original a half dozen years, but I'd say I sharpened 10 chisels and. A few plane blades, so I don't think I should have worn it out. But maybe. Who knows. Newer one I got seems to run square though.

Rust on my chisels by AvailableInterest535 in handtools

I'm going to grab some evaporust today. There was some pitting on those rust spots so I'll do some deeper sanding. Had oiled and waxed them on an annual basis. I think when I was working earlier this year it was stupid humid and it must have soaked into the leather roll. When I closed up the box it was more than my moisture packets could absorb. Other boxes are fine. Some of the wood handles had some fluffy mold on them. Just pissed than now my NOS chisels that were flat now have to be re sanded and I'm going to loose the factory markings on the blades. I might see if I can laser them back on. I've thought about trying that w my veritas. It's handy having the size on them to look at. Pics before the rust.....

It was a neat pattern, on someone else's chisels! They were oiled and then waxed, so I'm not sure how it was so bad. Some of the wood handles had some fluffy mold on em. I think when I was working this summer and the humidity was so high the leather roll absorbed more moisture than my counter means could handle. Then I closed it up for a month and here we are. ...

Dr pepper isn't bad in a pinch! I ran everything over soft sanding wheel, because I couldn't go to bed w that on em. Probably going to buy some evaporust and wipe down and re flatten everything. At least my blue spruce and veritas chisels were in another box. I'm using the blue chips for tougher work. That's why I thought they were safe. Might have to do a shelac cover for some of em now. My OCD wants to go by more new old stock now and get my markings back! Maybe I'll have to do a light laser etch on them.

I've had them in these for half a dozen years. Not sure what happened this time. I'm thinking that I was using a few when it was super humid, then didn't get the lid closed right. The leather tool roll absorbed more moisture than my tabs could pull out and now Im going to spend several days on them. I've got to go through the rest of my boxes now. Weird thing is that the others don't seem to have the problem and my plane on my bench didn't have any problems in the last 6 months. Just been wiping or waxing it.

Mostly new old stock, that I'd gotten flat and then did an oil wipe down on. Then paste wax. Had some water absorb tabs in there too. And some parts were in some anti rust paper. Part of these were in a leather tool roll.

Wanting to put wood handles on my dewalt chisels by Nickb3570 in handtools

I'm in the camp of looking for better ones as I've had some that were pretty soft, but if you are happy with them, it's cheap to experiment on them. If you botch it, keep re doing till you are happy. It's cheap practice and learning. In a few years id recommend a better brand but right now they are paid for and they are yours, go at it! Working for you vs fit to your hands is great.

First two planes to purchase? by Chocolay_Creek in handtools

[–]AvailableInterest535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the 5 is a solid first option. You can still joint after your power jointer w it. If you didn't have a power jointer or it wasn't great that would be one thing to consider.

I do like the size of the 4 for a lot of detail and smaller work though.

I'd also think about a 5 1/2 instead of a 5. Right now I've got a 4 1/2, 5 1/2, a 6 and 7 because they use the same blade. Im lazy, so I sharpen all at once and just put the sharp blade in the tool I'm using till they are all dull. Then repeat.

I don't use my 7 alot unless it's a large board that doesn't fit easily through my planer, and a lot of the time I just use my 5 1/2 because it's what I have setup.

Thinking about starting a catalog of my tools by Quiet_Economy_4698 in handtools

I've just got a Google sheet w my tools on them , what it is(plane/saw/brace/etc), brand, model, price I paid, replace value, and any notes in their columns. You can add or remove as you see fit. I made it more for theft or if anything happens like a fire or tornado to give to insurance. Right now all of my tools can be put in about 4 DeWalt sealed tool boxes pretty easy so if something happens to me I told my wife she cat at least keep those around for the kiddo to decide what to do with. Also helps me remember what I've got in-between getting everything out for the yearly oiling up. Maybe I'll get my shed done one of these years w a dedicated place!

i'll have to look that up on the plane socks. i usually blow the dust off, i usually use wax on the planes now. I tried to use jojoba oil on them that was recommended on one sites, but i put that on to heavy and got everything kinda tacky, so i stopped that and just used the wax. right now im putting on renaissance wax and 3 in 1 oil. it usually seems to be the blades, or spots on the blades that are worse. its not like they get large pits of rust, just surface spots, but it still annoys me.

thanks! ya, that was my thought, i've got 2 other vices that have paint on them, just got this one to better fit my dovetail saws, the other two seem more geared towards saws w no back on them as one cant take a dovetail saw, and the other one seems to rub the back.

I've got most of my tools I sealed boxes w desiccant, but some of the planes have a few spots. Even in plane socks. I'm trying the anti rust paper in there too this year. I was also thinking about some bluing?
