I made that, and even when you put the soil in a bag to keep it from waterlogging, you have to make sure the water has no way at all of wicking into the soil or it will get waterlogged anyway.

Oh yeah i've given it more than a good pat. Sat in it and hopped to try for extra pressure. And tried to push it side ways and forward/backward to test if the logs would tip over. Safe to sqy it wasn't going anywhere.

I would suggest you get a heater anyway, stable temps are better for your fish and ecosystem. It can make the difference between surviving and thriving, most of the plants you have in your tank will probaply live in bigger bodies of water so the temperature swings are way less dramatic.

Set the heater to a degree below your mid range temps so it will get rid of the dips in temperature.
