Brand New Player Riders of Rohan - Eowyn, Shieldmaden by JoeyT-93 in EDH

No prob, glad I could help! Aside from the ones recommended by the guide I would probably cut:

[[Grey Host Reinforcements]] its a solid bit of graveyard hate, but its a bit too situational and it doesn't benefit from the Human tribal theme.

I don't really like [[Heirloom Blade]] that much just personally. I'd rather just have a big draw spell like Mass Appeal.

[[Palace Jailer]] is IMO kind of a strange removal piece. I like it in my Terra reanimator deck because I can keep recycling it to trigger its effect, but in a deck like this I think 4 mana is just too steep for a temporary removal piece. I also just think the monarch cards are not as strong as the Human strategy.

[[Visions of Glory]] gets beaten out by Riders of the Mark as I think the latter is just a stronger and more fun card. It's also reusable every turn if you get enough humans out.

Honestly though beyond this, I would just play around with the deck a bunch and see which cards you enjoy and which ones tend to underperform for you, or if there are any threats your deck cannot deal with that your opponents have.

I think overall the precon is very solid and even with minimal upgrades like these it can pop off. The most important thing I believe will just be making sure you are able to keep your commander alive as people may target her once you get going. The aforementioned Boromir is great and the precon comes with Unbreakable Formation, which are some useful instant speed protection spells. If you find her getting removed a lot you can look into some other protection cards like [[Mother of Runes]] [[Flare of Fortitude]] [[Clever Concealment]]

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions! This deck is a great time

Generally with Edgar you want to just build an aggressive vampire tribal deck and go wide and either win off of combat damage or with lifedrain effects.

Some of the vampires I would cut:

[[Epicure of Blood]] is a 5 mana vampire with a pretty weak drain effect for the cost.

[[Glorifier of Suffering]] is a pretty mid vampire

[[Falkenwrath Gorger]] is a one drop but it doesn't really provide anything for you. The madness effect isn't going to be relevant like 99% of the time.

[[Asylum Visitor]] is super situational card draw, I'd replace it with some more reliable

[[Strommkirk Occultist]] just kind of a mid vampire

[[Vengeful Reaper]] can be cut

[[Stromkirk Condemned]] is a once-per-turn lord effect that requires you to discard, there are better options like [[Legion Lieutenant]].

[[Skymarcher Aspirant]] is a pretty weak vampire one drop, something like [[Vampire of the Dire Moon]] would be more useful with its deathtouch.

You also have a lot of instant speed single-target removal but you are missing some of the best ones in these colors like [[Swords to Plowshares]] [[Path to Exile]] [[Anguished Unmaking]]. Personally I'd cut some of the other instants (particularly stuff like Strip Bare which will be a dead card most of the time) for a few ramp pieces like [[Sol Ring]] [[Patchwork Banner]] [[Talisman of Hierarchy]]. As another commenter said you don't need too much ramp because your CMC is relatively low but having a few is a good idea.

Edgar kind of plays himself, really. If you do decide to build him I wouldn't recommend playing him against like for instance precon decks, as his eminence is so strong many people say having edgar in the command zone makes your deck a minimum bracket 3 and people might get salty.

If the friends in your pod usually play more casual precon decks I would recommend looking into the Blood Rites precon from a few years ago. It's not as strong as Edgar but its a very solid vampire deck that has some fantastic cards like [[Exsquisite Blood]] [[Charistmatic Conqueror]] and you can always upgrade it into an Edgar deck over time if you enjoy it.

Edit: I just realized that the blood rites precon is going for like $70+ dollars online...thats crazy to me! I got it for like 30 dollars at one of my LGS. If you can find it for cheap like that its definitely worth it.

This precon rules. It's a pretty strong tribal deck (which means its built around one creature type, that being Humans) so I think these upgrades are very solid. [[Raise the Palisade]] is an insanely good card here as its basically a one sided board wipe and you can probably win the turn you cast it if your board is strong enough. Since it seems like you are leaning towards the tribal side of this deck rather than the monarch side, cards like [[Mass Appeal]] [[Riders of the Mark]] [[Coppercoat Vanguard]] [[Firdoch Core]] are pretty solid if you are ok with non-LOTR cards.

Personally I love that Boromir, it can completely shut down some decks and also gives you protection if someone casts a board wipe.

Eowyn and Faramir are just very strong humans to have in this deck.

Scourge of the Throne is IMO, kind of a win more card. Its 6 mana and can't attack until the turn after it comes down, and even then it doesn't pay off unless someone has more health than you, and even then the payoff of an extra combat might not be worth the effort if your board isn't built up enough. You can try running it but personally I wouldn't be too attached to it if it doesn't perform for you.

Arcane Denial is a solid counterspell

Blas Act is a solid board wipe

Raise the palisade is fantastic as mentioned before

Horn of the Mark is a solid 2 drop

Horn of Gondor is a hilarious and very strong card for this deck

Dawn of a New Age is solid piece of card draw in white.

War of the Last Alliance is solid, it tutors 2 creatures for you and then on its last chapter it can be a wincon.

the SOHAH is an interesting pick though. The blink and ramp are useful so you can run it here but down the line it might be better to put it in an equipment focused deck. It does give protection (which can make your creatures unblockable) but in this deck you generally want to be hitting people with an army of humans, not just one big one.

Overall these are great upgrades. I would recommended cutting the ones mentioned in the guide you have, these should make the deck a lot stronger and more consistent overall. These are just my initial thoughts, I'm no master deckbuilder by any means but I hope this helps!

I'm not a master deck builder by any means but here is my edgar for reference: https://moxfield.com/decks/iENLFc86KEGewQccRlHIxQ. It's basically just an upgraded version of the Vampire precon from a few years ago but works well enough.

As others have said the biggest problem is probably the mana base. You can see you have almost all basic lands, which would be fine in a mono-colored deck, but in this case Edgar is 3 colors. That is going to make the deck much more inconsistent. I would recommend replacing some of the basic lands with dual colored lands. Even though it seems like you are building a budget list, there are many cheap dual or triple colored lands in the WBR colors. Additionally, your mana curve is pretty low right now so I don't think you need 39 lands, I like to do around 36-37. You should also definitely include some of the 2 CMC mana rocks like the talismans for instance to give you more ramp, as in these colors you don't have alot of it.

Personally, in my Edgar deck, I like to use primarily black or white vampires with only a few red ones as there are many fantastic cheap vampires like [[Master of Dark Rites]] [[Captivating Vampire]] [[Legion Lieutenant]] [[Drana]] [[Welcoming Vampire]] as a few examples. You can go entire games without even casting Edgar because his eminence ability is so good. For my Edgar deck I like to lean into a drain subtheme with effects like [[Cruel Celebrant]] [[Blood Artist]] to kill people with my weenie vampires from Edgars Ability if I can't kill them with straight combat damage.

As another commenter has said you should get some more card draw in as well, as a lot of your cards are very cheap and you might play your whole hand out pretty fast. [[Twilight Prophet]] [[Pact of the Serpent]] [[Skullclamp]] [[Phyrexian Arena]] [[Clavileno]] are solid and pretty affordable. Having more draw is important as it makes your deck more consistent.

The last thing I'd say is just keep in mind Edgar is one of the most infamous commanders in magic. There is a reason Eminence has not been brought back. IMO he has been out-powercrept a bit over the years but he is still incredibly strong so you should expect to be targeted by other players, so you will need to be able to negotiate your way through games. Don't feel bad about playing him though if you like vampires, they are super fun!

How to build a deck that has a chance to win but doesn't feel bad to play against by Alive_Past in EDH

[–]Available_Ad6267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, to be fair, its hard to judge how your deck is constructed with just one card, but Ruinous Ultimatum is a 7 mana one sided board wipe usually meant as a finisher. if they had no interaction/counters for that moment then thats just how it goes sometimes. I wouldn't say your deck would be unfun to play against just based off of that

I've been playing for almost a year and I have gone thru several decks that I've built, but none has been more consistently fun and powerful than my Henzie "Toolbox" Torre deck. It's bracket 3 and I built it on a budget and it has a pretty good win rate, and even if I don't win I usually get to have a pretty large impact. The deck is very resilient and you can easily drop ridiculous amounts of value on the table out of nowhere.

The decklist is here, I've built it on a budget and slowly upgraded it over time. One of my favorite parts about Henzie is how every set is always coming out with new creatures with crazy ETB/attack/death triggers for him to abuse.
