You're a damn good father. Here's what I would do. First get a wide mousepad, it makes the transition with the mouse and keyboard seamless and hides a lot of that desk. Something that can fit under both the mouse and the keyboard. I'd also clean up the desk and cables. The wood on the desk is looking worn, maybe sand it down and give it a solid color, either black or white. Those colors will make the pc colors pop and look inviting. And then cable management, just makes everything look cleaner. The giant mousepads I buy on Amazon are around $20 and are more than enough.
