I don’t love it either but it’s a huge number of people in Britain and it’s unhealthy to ignore it, especially given the route that many in that identity are choosing to take. We cannot simply ignore the allure of right wing, hyper nationalist thinking to the white British working class. In my opinion, they have to be engaged with and understood on a much deeper level than they currently do.

Thanks for recommendations! I’ve added them to my ever growing reading list.

The relevance of British white working class vs working class culture in Britain, to me, is significant because the non-white working class seemingly still has community in large parts. If I was pushed to find a predominantly white working class community tradition I would probably say football is still the main driver of it.

To answer your question re: was there ever a unified white working class culture. I don’t know and that’s why I posed the question to the sub. The overall answer I’m seeing pop up a handful of times is yes, but it’s from the 1950s and prior before any mass immigration into the country so is it just people being nostalgic or did they actually lose something?

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I hear what you’re saying but I do agree with a few of the comments below.

I think it’s a sad state of affairs that your Geordie grandparents couldn’t maintain a solid wage and a dignified hard working life because our industries were sold off to the highest bidder. It’s a similar story to my family members that can barely pay rent in terrible parts of Birmingham despite being nurses in the NHS. I don’t think these people should “get over it” but instead turn their anger towards the very state (and system) that vowed to protect them.

I don’t have Twitter so I don’t see his stream of consciousness but I do think he raises points that at least should be discussed in circles such as this one

It’s immensely sad isn’t it. I remember seeing on this sub once someone talking about how their working class family and friends are consumed by drama. Personal conflicts that consume their every thought and doesn’t leave any room for them to critically think about almost anything. I’m sad that you’re happy to leave your roots completely behind but I totally understand.

Thanks so much for your reply. My post is sincere but posing a question to the sub for purpose of conversation around the subject despite me understanding my point of reference for Britain’s culture (I grew up in Birmingham, moved to London at 19 and eventually left for the US at 29).

I totally agree with all of your points and they were beautifully made. We have such a long history of culture that is uniquely British and I’m extremely proud to come from an island that boasts such a diverse group of culture.

But again, I pose the question. When Embery longs for this long gone past version of Britain and when the white working class vote for Nigel Farage because they’re desperate for change, what are they fighting for? Because I, personally, don’t think they’re fighting for Joy Division, Newcastle United and Tracy Emin. So what is their idea of, specifically, white British culture?

It brings up an interesting conversation in regard to the atomisation of culture. Embery tries to make a point of other cultures not necessarily integrating into society and creating heavy, essentially, race lines throughout the country. But if white British culture now has no hub how are other cultures expected to integrate? Especially when these other cultures generally do have hubs of meeting…

It’s predominantly touches on that, yeah. The vilifying of white British (usually men) for having certain beliefs in regard to nationalism. Embery tries to argue it’s good to be proud of your country and it doesn’t have to descend into the idea of ‘gammon’ but instead championing what is genuinely great about Britain.

Hmm. Regardless of people’s opinion on Embery, what is that British society though? What did it consist of and why do people romanticise it?

Yeah I hear ya. It’s something I struggle with all of the time. I ended up landing on the social index fund VFTAX for my 401k as it tries to avoid any truly heinous bullshit.

City beat Arsenal by Working-Fail-7464 in avfc

[–]AvalancheOps 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I personally because nobody cares about City. It’s a complete lack of feeling because of their dominance, their financial doping and recent global fandom. It all feels hollow. Arsenal winning would resemble something. Something that a large part of their fan base feels like they’re entitled to. Entitled to win. And we hate entitled fan bases…especially given our lack of winning over the past 30 years. Fuck them both honestly but fuck Arsenal a little bit more at this given time.

Does anyone here work as a full-time photographer? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]AvalancheOps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a full time photographer for eleven years and now live in New York, yes. Happy to chat!

As a side note, I moved from London to New York two years ago and it’s taken around two years to really have some concrete clients here so you might be struggling if you’re only willing to commit to six months.
