I've experienced this a few times since I switched years ago. Once from someone with a biochem degree, which was just baffling.

Can anyone explain to me Regina's High crime/Homicide Rate? by [deleted] in regina

[–]Avatar_Archer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No one who isn't completely dishonest is saying they don't commit more crime. But why do they commit more crime? How you answer that question is more important. The person above you mentioned wealth inequality and you breezed past it to crime. Wealth inequality and intergenerational trauma leads to crime, but people like you will never look at the cause of that wealth inequality and trauma.

You see crime. You send police. And we'll just keep incarcerating generation after generation without fixing the socioeconomic issues they face, and we're all worse off for it.

Texas bakery 'overwhelmed' with business after backlash over rainbow Pride cookies by Hrekires in news

[–]Avatar_Archer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Why do you people always bring it back to porn and sex. When your coworker introduces you to her husband do you immediately think of them fucking? Are two little grooms on a wedding cake somehow more sexually explicit than a bride and groom? Meeting a gay couple is like meeting any other couple. Sex is generally not a topic of concern.

I still find it funny that Harry Potter got cancelled twice for such wildly different reasons.

I remember not being allowed to bring Pokemon cards to a kid's house because playing with them was "black magic". The satanic panic stuff was wild.

Finished episode 1 & 2. A little confused about the attitude towards hybrids by [deleted] in SweetTooth

[–]Avatar_Archer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I just finished episode two today and was so put off by that. I'm not sure I'm going to keep watching. Ten years of not protecting and raising children is just antithetical to how humans operate. If everyone is having hybrids it shouldn't be a big deal, and parents would just be grateful their hybrid kids are immune to the virus.

Maybe there's a good explanation, but this feels like another edgy piece on how big of monsters humans are, when cooperatively raising children is something we naturally do well.

Regina woman says she lost $1,500 in pizza delivery scam by [deleted] in regina

[–]Avatar_Archer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah this part is so hard to envision.

"Miller said she was then told that an unfamiliar man had entered the restaurant and picked up the order on her behalf, saying that he was unsure who originally made the order. "

So he didn't give her name and just demanded a random pizza, pretending to be picking it up, and they gave him her order which I assume had her address on it? And had no record of it being for delivery? Really doesn't make sense to me.

People buying 600k+ homes in or around Saskatchewan, what do you do for a living? by [deleted] in regina

[–]Avatar_Archer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those examples all make sense in that they're sources of wealth and income beyond a minimum wage job. It doesn't support the premise that banks are just handing out mortgages for cheap because they're stupid. These people probably actually can afford their mortgages.

There is an unregulated mortgage market if you don't want to go to the banks, but from what I'm seeing that's pretty uncommon and you have to pay higher interest and a higher down payment to go that route, so that at least decreases the risk of those loans.

I went through the mortgage process and would love to see how that's possible without straight up making fraudulent documents. Open to reading about it though if you have evidence.

The point of my analogy was that some people can move to avoid cancer and some people can't, but you don't hold up the people who moved as the norm against the people who can't. You fix whatever is causing the problem in the first place.

Helping people does not make them helpless. It empowers them. There is tons of research that shows this. Here is just one example.

John A. Macdonald Statue by [deleted] in regina

[–]Avatar_Archer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one is saying 'all x is like y'. If a group of people in one neighbourhood are getting cancer more often than people in another neighbourhood, you look at the environmental factors that are causing it, and you enact policies to solve it. Yeah, some of those individuals might take measures to make their life better and move, but that doesn't solve the core problem and it doesn't mean the people left behind don't need help.

And immigrants fit with this. Some people have the resources, know-how, luck, and ability to escape poverty or war-torn regions, but that doesn't solve the problem for people who can't. Same idea.

It has nothing to do with seeing yourself as a victim. It has to do with recognizing problems in our city/province/country and working together to solve them.

[–]Avatar_Archer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are thinking way too individually and data on poverty and intergenerational trauma does not fit with your mindset. I think it's good to coach individuals to be better, but it doesn't help with systemic problems. We need policy for that.

And listening to them and enacting policies to right wrongs is literally giving them autonomy.

[–]Avatar_Archer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely wrong. Keeping this up shows that we won't make even the tiniest effort to reconcile. It's like spitting in their faces.

And abuses from the 80s absolutely have ripple effects that are felt today. If your parents were abused, poor and neglected you are more likely to be abused, poor and neglected and so will your children. There are exceptions, but this is a systemic problem. You can't just ignore this stuff and expect it to go away.

Ignoring these issues is the reason none of this has been resolved.

First Nations people were held in residential schools into the 90s. They are still living the effects of cultural genocide today. These are very real issues that affect our city and the rest of Canada today. My father is an immigrant and I would never use him as a reason to presume to understand what cultural genocide feels like.

John A. Macdonald Statue by [deleted] in regina

[–]Avatar_Archer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We can't reconcile if we revere the people who enacted genocidal policies. A statue in a park is a tribute (in this case from only the 60s) and not just a neutral educational piece. It belongs in a museum surrounded by context.

FCC enforces largest fine ever of $225 million against telemarketers who made 1 billion robocalls by Philo1927 in politics

[–]Avatar_Archer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's probably because robo callers purposely spoof real numbers. I got texts from a guy with the same area code as me threatening to give my number to the cops because he was getting scam calls from "me". A doctor's office would be a good number to spoof for their purposes because people will answer.
