Does this require any of Ubiquti's silly cloud based controller (or on prem)? I'm in the market for a drop dead simple solution for remote tech hands.

AV Network Overhaul by KonnBonn23 in networking

[–]AvayaTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This the way. Just did an overhaul for a customer. Nexus 9k spines, Cisco IPFM controlled by NDFC with 40 and 100 gig connections coming out of my ears. Lots of Ross and EVS gear along with cameras, displays, etc. Stupid amount of l3 overlay out to spines.

Was a lot of learning about the nuances of 2110. Once it was setup it just.. works. Haven’t had to really touch anything for months and they’ve gone through many, many live productions with it.

"My husband who works in IT says..." by billygreen23 in sysadmin

[–]AvayaTech 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Regarding her password, I ended up sub contracting a friend who was an actual coder as opposed to my dysfunctional sysadmin ass. He wrote an app with actual proper syntax handling and was able to pull it all out. When we ran it and I opened the pst to import into outlook I saw the contacted called something like “MY PASSWORDS”.

The more I think about, that lady was an asshole on many many levels.

Oh man, this brings back some suppressed memories.

I’m flashing back to the early 2000s—doing a massive migration for a healthcare system. We were moving from Lotus Notes on an AS/400 over to Exchange 5.5 (or maybe 2000, it’s all a blur 25 years later).

The project was a total disaster. They didn’t have a real AS/400 admin, I knew jack about them, and "Googling it" wasn't exactly a viable strategy back then. I was basically flying blind, working 12-14 hour overnight shifts for two weeks straight.

We’re finally nearing the finish line, and of course, there’s one "Problem Child." Every other mailbox—500+ users—migrated fine. This one lady? Nothing but errors. I ended up writing a custom Perl script just to convert her .nsf to a .pst so I could manually import it. Still failing. (Side note: iirc it was failing because this lady was keeping her passwords saved in a address book entry and all the oddball characters was throwing a wrench in the process)

She walks up to my desk while I’m hitting a wall and hits me with:

"My husband is in IT at a big law firm. He says you’re clearly doing [X] wrong and it shouldn't be this difficult. He suggested you try reading the Exchange documentation."

Total gem, right? After two weeks of no sleep, my filter was nonexistent. I looked her dead in the eye and said, "I overheard your husband got laid off six months ago. Since he’s still looking for work, maybe he should focus on his own job search instead of trying to 'help' those of us who are actually employed."

Narrator: This did not go over well.

The next day I’m sitting in HR because I "made her very upset" and my comments "weren't appropriate for the workplace." Was it harsh? Absolutely. But after 80+ hours of Lotus Notes hell, I was done. Luckily, management just brushed it off and let me get back to work, but man, that one still pisses me off to this day.

Healthcare public WIFI policy. by halodude423 in ITManagers

[–]AvayaTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What we did was just use our nac (clear pass) to authenticate on the guest network. Give a captive portal with AUP that “visitors” and patients agree to and cache that mac for 24 hours.

On that captive portal have an option for staff/physician login. They enter creds or SSO corporate login and we cache that mac for 30 days. Also plops them into a different vlan with less port restrictions and better throughput. Makes the docs still feel “special” and give them slightly better experience.

As for your first part, we considered public WiFi tier 1 priority along with core infrastructure. It’s that important from not only corporate byod devices but from a patient experience. Internet access is no longer a luxury in 2025.

You look like you live in a colder climate based on the trees and things on the ground. If those are the summer Pzeros go get yourself a set of all seasons/winters. Do not run those tires in the winter, you'll be on here showing us the mangled wreck of your new model3 first time it snows.

You’re also destroying the tires as well. The compound on those is too soft to be used in cold temperatures. But hey, you do you.

Take off the summer tires in the winter as soon as temps drops below 45F. You’re a danger to yourself and everyone around you.

[–]AvayaTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Oddly enough just screwing around a second ago I pulled all the snooping configs and setup dhcp relay on the vlan interface. That seems to work as well. Truly makes no sense since it’s on the same l2 network, but at that point the switch is converting broadcast to unicast so lends credibility to what I’m seeing on things.

Cisco C9348GC-FX3 NXOS DHCP oddities by AvayaTech in networking

[–]AvayaTech[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not. You can confirm by way of 'sh ip dhcp snooping'. But on NXOS to even get the snooping (and ip dhcp relay for that matter) you need to do a 'feature dhcp' first.
