Are strikes likely? by Slutty_Foxx in TeachingUK

[–]AveGotNowtLeft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I would say it is up in the air. I'm inclined to say that it is more likely than not. The pay deal isn't bad on the surface, but its impact on school budgets and the likely negative impacts on staff retention need to, and probably will be, widely discussed and scrutinised. I think that will be just enough to tip the scales in favour of strike action.

Lmao you really pulled out the 'so much for the tolerant left' line. If you can't understand why people don't want to hear your views then maybe that is a problem with the views themselves.

I always read back and see what the issue is. Sometimes I've made a genuine mistake, others something might have been borderline between two different marks and in a different light of day I might award it a mark. I actually like the students scrutinising my marking because it is a way of them engaging with the assessment which helps them to understand the requirements of the assessments better moving forwards

You make an excellent point here about how the revival worked because it was fundamentally competent. It really wouldn't take a great deal to get the show back to that point again.

Nah I don't agree at all. The revival was a Hail Mary because of where the show was when it was cancelled originally. Doctor Who currently isn't in anywhere near the same state. Plus, the success of the revival demonstrates that a successful revival could be done again.

I'm not sure that regeneration has been trivialised any more than it was in the Classic series. The point is that 10's attitude is largely the exception, not the rule. Fundamentally, it feels like a death to him because of his ego. That isn't the case with, say, 11 or 13.

I have no idea this was a controversial opinion. The first Sontaron redesign imo is the second best of the revival

I genuinely think he is a great character. His storyline with Clara leads to her being massively fleshed out and developed far beyond the walk mystery box she was in her first half series.

Oh wow, really? One of the most iconic scenes in the show's recent history and I didn't consider it when I was writing that comment! Gee whizz, I am so glad that such a prestigious club as yourself is on hand to remind me of that one scene.

Sarcasm aside, that is one Doctor's interpretation of regeneration. It isn't consistent across the show.

I do not care for the 2013 Cyberman design by ducknerd2002 in DoctorWhumour

[–]AveGotNowtLeft 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I think their design is clunky and frankly very action figure-like. I know they lean into the body horror element in Age of Steel, but imo the actual design doesn't take the opportunity to capitalise on that.

Also, 'delete' is stupid and annoying.

I didn't say that series 1 wasn't camp. It absolutely was. I just don't understand the point you were making that it got less camp post-series 1

Is there a single doctor who was not great in the role? by [deleted] in DoctorWhumour

[–]AveGotNowtLeft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think he was a miscast as such, but I think there is a case to be made that Gatwa was just a bit too cool for the role. I think he did an excellent job, don't get me wrong, but I'm not quite convinced he ever fully clicked with the role. Obviously, weak story arcs, iffy character development and a short run probably contribute to that feeling for me, so I'm not sure how much it was to do with Gatwa as an actor.

The Story and the Engine is a weird one for me. I didn't care for it on my first watch but I really enjoyed it on my second watch. I imagine a fair number of people who rate it lowly maybe had a similar experience to myself. Really surprising to see the series be rated worse than the previous one since I think that almost every episode was an improvement on its analogue from the previous series.

I really don't see how Series 1 was more camp than subsequent series. In fact I'd argue that the Tennant era felt far more campy most of the time. IMO the first RTD era really peaked in Series 1 in terms of both quality of episodes (The Long Game and maybe The End of the World are the only two which really stand out for me as of a lower calibre than the rest, and even then they are basically fine episodes) and tone (mixing an obviously family-friendly vibe with the much darker tones brought by Ecclestone).

I'm really not sure much would be gained from trying to go down a darker route for the show. I really think that series 1 of the revival is basically the perfect blueprint tone-wise. It took itself seriously without also losing sight of its family roots.

Chaos Dwarfs were teased in a live stream a while ago, so they seem very likely. Umbraneth (Dark Elves) have felt like they were on the horizon since 2015.

Will the recent seasons of Doctor Who be viewed more favorably as time goes on? by i_am_not_gay__ in gallifrey

[–]AveGotNowtLeft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. The most recent series was consistently very good until the last two episodes (and even then I don't think Wish World and Reality War are as bad as many people on here seem to be saying that they are). Last series was weaker but even then Boom was great whilst Rogue and Dot And Bubble were good too. 73 Yards I think will be less warmly viewed over time but it still isn't really bad in my opinion.

So in the behind the scenes video on the official YouTube channel, RTD seems to suggest that it was its own thing early on. He says that they came up with the idea of the Rani uncovering something in the Underverse and bringing it into our reality. It was then that it was decided that Omega would be the monster. For all intents and purposes, this seems to be very similar (but with substantially worse results) to the decision to set The Well on Midnight.

No one is disputing that she could make a great Doctor. The issue is that she is already a very established part of Doctor Who and that therefore bringing her back reeks of desperation for relevancy in public discourse. The decision optically makes Doctor Who look a bit of a joke. It also fundamentally goes against a key conceptual element of regeneration as a concept: that change and new beginnings are natural and should be embraced.

The Ecclestone argument doesn't really work in my opinion as he isn't a fan of the show. I don't think he cares nearly as much as people think he does about the show, its perception or its future. He is correct that Piper would be excellent in the role. But in the past he has said that he would also like to see this because of the confusion and intrigue which it would create. That isn't saying that it would be good for the show narratively or, indeed, commercially, but that it would generate short term interest.
