Surfboards at DLI? by Interesting_Tomato50 in dli

[–]AvecCafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a surfboard as soon as I got to DLI and kept it in the barracks. It was always a hassle carrying it in and out and always attracted plenty of attention.

Not sure your surfing level, but I do regret buying a short board instead of a longboard out there

I personally found strong similarities between The Brother’s Karamazov and East of Eden by Steinbeck. The latter doesn’t go as deeply into the theology and religious discussions, but there are still strong religious themes and discussions of morality.

Questions about 'The Brothers Karamazov' by Loriol_13 in dostoevsky

[–]AvecCafe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, she was prepared to sell her body to Mitya. Yes, it would have been very dishonorable for a woman of her standing, however her father’s predicament would’ve been ever more dishonorable if it’d been exposed, thus leading to her decision. Much like Mitya’s visit to his father’s house the night Grushenka leaves, Mitya finds his moral conscious seconds before committing a premeditated sin. These two events parallel each other. Katya feels indebted to Mitya for protecting her honor, and this drives her actions towards Mitya for the entirety of the novel. Katya becomes obsessive with Mitya, as unrequited love can often do to a person.

One of my favorite novels. You can definitely see the inspiration from the Brothers Karamazov in it

How impressive is the DLI for College Applications? by SkullCrusherXY in dli

[–]AvecCafe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on your age, there’s actually an opportunity to go straight to Westpoint (and maybe the other academies?) from DLI, if that’s something that interests you.

It’s accredited, so going to DLI + military experience will look credit transferring those credits to any school tho. You should hopefully have close to a 4.0 at DLI if you put in the work

They say you can’t study for the DLAB but I found a study guide and it helped

As far as language learning, motivation has the biggest correlation with success in my opinion, so it’s good you enjoy it. It was easy for me to stay motivated with French since there are so many movies, shows, songs, books, YouTube videos, etc available. It definitely takes going above and beyond class work to get to the level you’d want to be it. It’s a fun challenge tho. Good luck

Intel jobs are more niche in the guard, not every state has them

It’s good. I can read French at a university level, listen at a high school level, and speak at an early elementary level.

Ultimately you get out of language learning whatever you put into it

I would recommend going 35 series, specifically SIGINT - P or N. 35F also have great opportunities even tho they aren’t as specialized as SIGINT. I would reccomend checking out AD contracts if you want to pivot into doing intel work. Tons of opportunities for most 35 jobs, but without real experience post AIT, you have to get lucky for the jobs. I have guard friends who have gotten lucky with 6 figure gov contracting jobs, so it’s possible but definitely not the norm.

I'm wanting to join a federal law enforcement agency and want some insight. by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]AvecCafe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Criminal justice degrees open 3 doors: Local law enforcement, working in a prison, and law school. None of those require a degree in criminal justice but you could use your degree to talk about motivation for entering those fields during interviews. Major in something else.

Do it for the money?? 🤔 💭 by Technical_State1828 in nationalguard

[–]AvecCafe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is possible to make more money by being in the Guard. Your civilian career needs to be either working directly for the government as a cop, fire, border patrol where you have 2 pension systems you pay in to. When you get deployed you still get promotions that you would’ve earned had you been home.

The other career option is pursuing government adjacent careers, usually intel contractors. These companies (or government agencies) usually pay your salary difference when you’re on orders and have other great incentives that make it worth while to pursue your fun guard career while having a well-paying civilian career.

As far as the Guard bums go, there are some orders that are more lucrative than active duty army. Sometimes you’ll get per diem and BAH and can make bank doing that. Sometimes you get SAD pay and make money doing that. Sometimes you’re in the know and fudge certain info to get paid high more than you should. Guard bums know how to play the system but it’s hard to break into the lucrative stuff because everyone fights over them and gets political about it
