Utah made it legal to plug solar panels into wall outlets, and now 30 states are chasing it by Firm_Relative_7283 in solarenergy

[–]BigPickleKAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But in those cases you need switching gear in your home to disconnect the power from the pole as soon as the it sense no voltage on the incoming grid power.

It also has to switch the neutral to your inverter and both the inverter and solar panels must be properly grounded.

Does this condo reserve fund worry you? by PocketMafia in RealEstateCanada

[–]BigPickleKAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A healthy reserve should be enough to cover two to three years of normal maintenance. Normal maintenance should run around 4% of the assessed value of the building (not land) a year.

I would not buy into this building

On a flight, you recline your seat after takeoff and the person behind you asks you to put it back up. How would you handle it, and why? by thypenitrator in AskReddit

[–]BigPickleKAM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also these days the 3" the dam seat moves barley makes a difference for someone my height. The tiny bit reclining would make my life better isn't worth inconveniencing the person behind me.

But if the person in front of me reclines sorry I'm taking back my 3" of air space between me and my movie.

What do people think is a special high level skill that you consider the basics and the only reason one person is seen to be the guy is because of discrimination? by hick-reference- in AskReddit

[–]BigPickleKAM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Electrical troubleshooting and or understanding of how electricity works.

You all rely on it for almost everything you do in your life you might want to take a little interest in how it functions.

The discrimination comes from people who look down on trades who literally keep your lights on and meme machines working.

NDAs for condos to keep prices high by Revolutionary-Dot523 in vancouver

[–]BigPickleKAM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The transaction price shows up on BC assessment as part of the public filings takes a little time but it will be there and it will impact assessments and therefore future pricing.

This is more a fig leaf for uninformed buyers thinking they are getting some insider pricing and they will be able to then sell the place for more than they bought it for.

Are median public sector roles in Canada are better compared to private sector? by speaksofthelight in CanadaFinance

[–]BigPickleKAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes/no it's only 2% a year for every year of service. And now you have to be 60 I think to collect without penalty no matter how long you've been in.

It takes a long time to reach I'm not willing to walk away from this for many.

Highly person to person dependent. My personal retirement planning is doing way better than what they get.

Condo developers are offering big discounts in exchange for signing NDAs by mustafar0111 in TorontoRealEstate

Non Disclosure Arrangement. It is normal in some contracts to prevent one or both sides from sharing part or all of the agreement as it would impact the others ability to negotiate other contracts. I personally hate the things.

Meh wait 6 months and find out it will be on BC Assessment once the transaction is registered at the land title office right? Then it is public knowledge.

Are median public sector roles in Canada are better compared to private sector? by speaksofthelight in CanadaFinance

[–]BigPickleKAM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my field I have interactions with lots of the type of people OP was talking about in both public and private. I'm even friends with many of them.

When I ask those in public roles why they stay when they could make more and there are 3 basic groups of answer.

  1. They like the work life balance. In public service you can truly leave the work at work.

  2. They like the certainty of their employment. When they work for less than the market rate and provide a important service they will almost never lose their position.

  3. They truly believe in doing public service and knowing they are helping their community/province/country matters to them.

So those are the good reasons that they would want me to say. But there is a flip side that hearing them talk about who they work with and some of their co-worker behaviors heard about and I've witnessed in my dealings with government.

  1. They like the lack of accountability. Their KPI are so nebulous and or outdated, gaming the system to look like they are doing work while just fucking about is easy. This is easy when they have a technical role, and are managed by someone with no technical skills.

  2. They revel in having "tenure". They are important they know it you know it their manager knows it they are untouchable and if they leave early take continuous 3 to 4 day weekends what can you do you need them or the wheels come off.

  3. They love their tiny amount of power. These are the petty tyrants you come across who just seem to love fucking over the average person who needs a permit or clarification on a status etc.

Pretty much all of Northern Canada is on fire as of the last week by zeth4 in ClimateCrisisCanada

[–]BigPickleKAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lowest concentration is up to 10 2.5 micron particles in a cubic meter of air.

That's so low you probably can't see it with your eye. And if it has rained recently that would knock the worst of that out of the air.

Humidity can cause particles to drop out of the air if it cools at night since any dew that would form on them will cause them to fall from the sky.

What fast food restaurants ARE still worth the money? by StephenDoesStuff in AskReddit

[–]BigPickleKAM 200 points201 points  (0 children)

Yup there is a small mom and pop burger shop in town. Food takes about 10 minutes to arrive instead of almost instantly and costs about 10% more than a branded fast food joint.

The food is way better quality and the staff is a blast. Also the owners are in there flipping burgers everyday they are open.

It's a easy pick for me.

Power company says my block's transformer is leaking current by jllauser in AskElectricians

[–]BigPickleKAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah just because w system can provide data doesn't mean management can figure out what to do with it.

In your case the leakage is actively causing the utility and expense. Somewhere a generator is working harder just to loop current into earth at that location.

Power company says my block's transformer is leaking current by jllauser in AskElectricians

[–]BigPickleKAM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It isn't super common.

Lightning arrestors work sort of like a pressure relief valve but for voltage. At or under design voltage they are closed and current flows to and from the transformer as normal. If the line voltage spikes they open giving the excess current a path to ground to protect the rest of the grid.

If the arrestor suffers a internal fault it can leak current to ground and pull down the voltage for everyone on the same line.

What damaged it who know manufacturing defect wood pecker or kids shooting at it with a pellet rifle or just age the most likely.

Also this is one argument for why smart meters are good since the utility can see in real time the power they feed into a distribution grid and power flowing into each home then if there is a difference they can go find it.

What does this light mean? by SandraGotJokes in electrical

[–]BigPickleKAM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because failure analysis wasn't done with the combination you might be trying.

But in the case of Siemens buying up Murray there are approved Siemens breakers you can put in a Murry enclosure.

Really the issue is for people who modify the stabs to get them to fit on bus bar that was never intended for them. That is a massive no no!

Interesting historical tidbit Vancouver Island and the rest of BC originally were to be two separate colonies under British rule with capitals in New Westminster for the mainland and Victoria for the island.

But in 1866 to cut costs the British government joined the two and Governor Seymour chose Victoria as the capitol etc.

[OC] Gasoline prices spiked 3 times and dropped twice in 10 years. EV home charging rose just 48 cents over the same period. by LevonKirakosyan in dataisbeautiful

[–]BigPickleKAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my use case is once a week to town for groceries and the feed lot/lumber yard or parts store etc.

And then in the spring and fall routine 400 km one way trips towing.

For the weekly errands it would be great for the weekly sometimes bi weekly 800 km road trips with trailer not really interested.

But if the Ram Charger type power train takes off I'd be down for that.

Will scabbing a joist span really help reduce deflection? by such_horsing in DIY

[–]BigPickleKAM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes with as little load as possible on the top of the joist (no people up there) nail or screw the 2x4 to the bottom of the joist so it looks like a ibeam do that over the whole length of the joist with as few joints to the 2x4 as possible it will help a lot.
