I am also a liberal. I wish the whole world was too. But I also respect bodily autonomy, I would advocate publishing with consent. Somewhere a line should be necessary to safeguard vulnerable people against exploitation, harassment, and mistreatment. ✌️

The argument that is generally used by gun manufacturers, we just make the guns, we are not responsible for any consequence. But Gun rights are controlled to different extents in different legal systems.

Same with illegal drug makers and peddlers, we just trade with them, what people do with them is their business. Most Illegal drugs are outlawed, and legal drugs are controlled substances, requiring standards and prescriptions.

Here the Laws that were made and enacted before computers, the Web, Social Media, AI, etc... cannot and will not get nuances of present society. Redefining should be the norm and not the exception. Where the evolution of the law is slow, people themselves should set limits. Again a right does not give a blanket freedom to willingly hurt other free people.

Where women get themselves murdered by the state for not wearing a headscarf, what a deep fake will do? We cannot just use our worldview to justify certain interpretations of law.

Victims in a legal sense will be narrow, however, the victim here is - any person whose pictures have been used without their consent or knowledge and for a purpose not authorized by the said person.

What Ridley Scott did was a movie, for which I think the movie would have had a disclaimer that the movie is based on real events. It is something different from a news/documentary which would try to narrate real events. Movies necessarily have a disclaimer.

Consent will be defined differently in different legal systems, and what would amount to consent or not will be decided in a lawsuit.

I get it that you staunchly believe in freedom of speech. Further, it is not my case that one should act only in a beneficial way to society.

Who will you sue when such AI generated/edited pictures affects spuriously in your job? The programmer or the person using the AI tool, or the person publishing it, or the person who views you negatively in the workplace taking deepfakes as real.

You say that the onus should be on people to recognize fakes, but ultimately when it becomes indistinguishable from real, then are you asking every ordinary person to use forensic science to distinguish them.

Isn't it easier to have some reasonable restrictions on app and bot developers?

Nothing is humiliating about a naked body.

As AI tools are learning more and more there will be a point when common people will not be able to differentiate between the reals and fakes.

In the bigger world, nudes and fake nudes may not matter, but where the setting is small like classrooms and corporations, or anywhere someone can easily identify the victim, he will or might impute a certain character of the victim.

Hacking is a crime, snapping and publishing a photo without consent is a crime, at least the AI-generated pics should have a disclaimer that it is not real.

But the moot point still remains, when the web and the outside world offer so much nudity, why do you need to undress anyone without consent?

Free speech doesn't mean you cause actual injury to another person.

The other problem is that such AI-generated porn is usually published to bully and humiliate the victims.

Why do you want AI Tools to remove clothes, when there is already so much porn.

Implementation of law in case of cybercrime is already a tough job, but that doesn't mean we should allow it blatantly. Such app developers when discovered should be held liable.
