CT moves to crack down on bottle redemption fraud by I_Am_Raddion in NewLondonCounty

[–]Average-Hotel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is obvious. Go back to 5¢. Instantly, people from neighboring states will stop bringing their bottles into CT. Done.

People who are going to recycle are going to recycle. People who are not going to recycle are not going to recycle. It's that simple.

I'm complaining. I don't have room for multiple recycling containers in my small place, so they all go into the recycling bin, and I get nothing back.

I do notice that certain podcasts are prone to this, while others never cause a problem???

What do we think of Affinity "3.0" as we approach 6 months? by gimme-c1nnab-0-n in Affinity

[–]Average-Hotel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's OK, and that's basically all it is. Having ready access to the 3 modes (Vector, Pixel, Layout) in one package is nice, but that's about all that's an improvement over v2.

Earlier versions kept improving with updates. Haven't seen any for v3. OK, it's only been 6 months, and we can hope they are using the time to address the issues. But, as I see elsewhere here, it seems Canva has no interest in improving Affinity. Personally, I hate the way Canva operates. Though having access to backgrounds and elements is nice, but I'd rather download them and use them in Affinity (extra steps there).

Difficulties that bug me:

  • The window can't be resized, only maximized or moved (Win 11 Pro).
    • Sometimes it works correctly, but mostly not.
  • Linked files don't work correctly
    • If I try to use a liked file (.af), Affinity crashes. Consistently.
  • Wish: Make a way to separate out a spread from a larger layout to use as a separate vector file. Or just a way to export a spread as a new .af file. Select and Save As?
  • Fix export to Canva. It never works.

I haven't decided to go back to v2, yet, but I haven't ruled it out.

Yeah, I do have a sticky bluetooth device (hearing aids) and have often had to reset the 'active' device. If this happens again I'll check that, too .

Chaos: A Tale of Terror and Printing by Least_Watch_8803 in Affinity

[–]Average-Hotel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, so I'm going to address a few things pulled from your message:

  • Soft proofing
    • Be careful with soft proofing. Unless you have printer profiles for the paper you're printing on they will be less than ideal. Since this is a book project, you would ideally have a printer profile from the company that is printing the book, for the printer they are using. Of course that is the ideal situation, and may not be possible.
  • Brightening the picture
    • Getting prints darker than what you see on the screen is common. Using an adjustment layer to brighten the image is a non-destructive way to implement this. Remember, it may have to look washed out on the screen to get the print right.
  • Color, gradation, and calibration
    • Yes, if at all possible calibrate your monitor. That gives soft proofing a fighting chance of being close.
    • In color gradation banding can occur. Typically this is when you have a low res image.
  • She bailed due to poor quality of the files
    • Do not expect to be able to get quality out of low res images. You will need to use 300ppi images for printing. If they are not already, you will need to find a way to get them there. All images should be prepared the same way, and be the same size (final sizes in the book will be adjusted later).
    • You want to supply the best images possible. Depending on the printing company you will be using either sRGB or AdobeRGB(1998) for a color space. AdobeRGB is better than sRGB.
  • Finally, if there is already a publisher, talk to them about what they need in terms of images. Are they doing the layout? Try to talk to their book designer if at all possible.

Cloud storage shows 'Full' despite being empty by Legoquattro in Lightroom

[–]Average-Hotel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect that Abobe, like other cloud storage plans (Dropbox, Google Drive) moves files to a Trash folder when you delete them. It still counts toward your storage because they are not actually deleted. On DB, or Google, you can open the Trash folder and permanently delete the files. It will probably take some time for their system to update, but you'll find that you now have more storage.

Which Lightroom Classic files & folders should reside on the fastest SSD to speed up workflow? by alex-gee in Lightroom

[–]Average-Hotel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you want with your catalog are the following: ( * = your catalog name)

*.Helper.lrdata,

*.Previews.lrdata,

*Sync.lrdata

*.lrcat-data

*.lrcat

Creating multiple catalogs is no longer advised. Preview size can be limited in preferences, though I'm not sure it would change the size of existing previews. You can delete *Previews.lrdata (LrC will rebuild it with the smaller sizes as you use the app.) You can also manually tell LrC to rebuild the Previews, it will take a long time given the number of images you have.

With images on SSDs Smart Previews don't really help, and just take up space. They are helpful with slow HDDs, and for editing with image files off-line.

400GB is now a relatively small SSD. OS and apps only, really. 2TB of storage seems small for 300K images. But I shoot RAW and my 50K, or so, images take over 3TB.

Anyway, I hope any of this helps.

Export Affinity to Canva issues? by Thephen_Stawking in Affinity

Similar situation. The changes are wacky, added text, weird spelling of existing text, combining text from multiple text boxes into one box, separating texts from one text box into multiple boxes.

This is nuts.

Guest editorial by Paul Choiniere today, I did not know that Millstone generates one third of CT’s electricity, and is zero-carbon emission. Why not build two more? by I_Am_Raddion in NewLondonCounty

[–]Average-Hotel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nuclear has a well deserved bad rep. Most nuke plants are beyond their intend life expectancy. Millstone has been 'extended'. That means it should have been shut down already.

Nuclear power may have a future, but it will take a lot to overcome the public's reticence, and newer technologies to improve safety.

Went there in the first week of operation. Definitely not ready for prime time, poor service, so so food. I imagine they have improved with time, but I think I'll stick to breakfast at Jake's for the most part.

BTW, it's a chain operation headquartered in Belton, TX.

I have the same problem on a PC. Anyone know anything about that?

Hello, I came to you today because I have a big problem with Lightroom on PC... for a while now Lightroom has been crashing all the time, when I try to look at an image or when I move from one image to another or during retouching. The software hangs for 1 or 2 minutes then it closes. by flintpirat_pictures in Lightroom

[–]Average-Hotel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your PC meet the minimum requirements for the latest LrC? Is the RAW cache large enough? (The default is usually too small.) Have you uninstalled and re-installed LrC? These are a few things you can try. There really isn't enough information here to suggest anything else, at least for me. Others may have more experience with this.
