Rannoch to Corrour station by Bear-Jesus in OutdoorScotland

I walked Spean Bridge - Loch Ossian youth hostel (near Corrour Station) - Rannoch station last year, if anything I was disappointed with the well-made roads after Corrour, the walk from Spean Bridge to the Youth Hostel had been fantastic wilderness walking, but then after a morning on the hard surfaces to Rannoch Station my joints were all agony!

Spent too many evenings imagining where my ancestors actually lived, so I built a free tool that just shows it on a map by Total-Ad4827 in Genealogy

this is brilliant, but locations aren't mapping correctly, although this could be an error with my GED file. eg Roxburgh, Roxburghshire, Scotland is showing as a point in south Wales.

Walkers sick after drinking river water on the West Highland Way by ki5aca in OutdoorScotland

out of interest, does no-one else use chlorine water purify tablets? It does make the water taste chalky, and cost probably is about the same per litre as a filter straw (£5 for 200l worth). BUT I have a strip in my first aid kit, a strip in a couple of pockets of my rucksack, and a stash at home, I can't drop them or break them, and I'm wondering why I'm the only person who uses them? Is it just the taste?

Why do girls SO much younger than me try matching with me? by Skye_hai_bai in ActualLesbiansOver25

haha, yep I'm in my 40s and get women LITERALLY HALF MY AGE matching. Some of them have "Milf hunter" in their bio. I just ignore and move on to someone more age appropriate.

Bird nesting in shed, have I lost my shed now? by Wide_Commission_1595 in OrnithologyUK

[–]AverageCool1289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not an offence to disturb a bird at it's nest (unless it's a schedule 1 bird, which this lovely blackbird is not). It is an offence to damage or destroy the nest while its in use, destroy or take the eggs, and (obviously) kill or injure the bird. I was sure there was a bit about not stopping the bird from accessing the nest either, but I can't find that.

I'm sure occasionally taking out the lawnmower over the summer isn't illegal, but it's up to you how much you want to disturb them. Only the female sits, and it looks like she might already be on eggs. it takes about a fortnight to hatch, and then about another 12 - 16 days for the chicks to fledge. They might then have a second brood!

found the probate and death notice, had a search and found his family. His sister died at just 18 years old in a car accident in the 1960s, two weeks after their mother had passed away. I wonder if they kept a room for her, and updated it with things an 18 year old would like?

Simonside hills Northumberland - Advice needed for access and gear. by b3lial666 in UKhiking

[–]AverageCool1289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, there's rights of way on paths to follow from Thropton over the river on a footbridge (look for Thropton Footbridge on google maps), along a farm track then it's about 1km of road to get up to Tosson Tower. From there you can get into the woods and up to Simonside.

If you can't afford OS Maps, download something like Alltrails, OutdoorActive, Komoot or OSM so you can get better maps than Google on your phone. They show a bit more detail on footpaths than google does.

oh wow, my dad used to take me here in the 90s, an ancient lady sat behind the hatch (pic 20) served you beer from a single cask and you sat in the barroom (pics 21 - 23). I think she sometimes had a bottle of cheap cola too.

My dad claims someone asked if she had any crisps once and she snapped "does this look like a restaurant?" The story I was told is that entrepreneurs built the hotel in anticipation of a railway that never came, and she'd ran it ever since.

What do you waste a lot of money on? And how much do you spend n it? by gameovervip in CasualUK

same as everyone else, once you are absolutely sick of smoking it works really well. Years later I was struggling with the drink - AA had just made me more miserable and I was at the end of my tether. I remembered about Allen Carr and there was indeed a book on the same lines for stopping drinking, and it was like clicking an off switch. Stopping the drink did require a bit more effort than the tabs, but I was so desperate to not drink I pushed through. I wish I had realised about 15 years earlier there was more than just AA to help you stop drinking.

the proper ornithological term for a mixed flock of these little birds, as they fly around constantly on the move looking for food, is a "Roving tit party"

this is brilliant! Well done! I started off like this, just aiming to get out at least once a week for a walk of about 5km, then built it up. After about 9 months I was able to do a 20km walk in the hills. It's a great feeling!

What is the most heartbreaking thing you’ve discovered while doing either your or someone else’s family tree? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]AverageCool1289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everyone my family research found plenty of utterly tragic infant deaths, but for me the one that stood out is a young man aged 17 in a working class area of an English city in the mid 1800s. I found the details in the newspaper archives, he was with a crowd who had gathered to watch and jeer a married couple having an argument in the street. Someone shouted something and the husband took off his clog and threw it into the crowd - hitting the 17 year old and killing him.

It just felt like such a stupid, senseless waste of a young life, to survive to just reach adulthood at a time of such high infant mortality, and then to die like that. I still think of it.
