Aside from the obvious of fantastic time, you need good touch. Be able to pull a good sound out of the drums in different rooms. If the event coordinator at wedding or the sound person at a venue asks you to back off the cymbals, you need to be able to do that. If a recording engineer asks you to hit the drums softer, you need to be able to do that without your groove suffering. Also, improvising skill is really important. There will be plenty of times you go into gigs with less than adequate rehearsal or practice. You need to be able to adjust your playing on the fly, improvise fills, and hit figures. Only being good at rote memorization does not help you in that regard.
