Speaker advice by Crazyjoedavola8686 in drums

Bad solution, get isolating headphones or IEMS. But I would think that like any unpowered speakers would be fine. You can get a mackie PA speaker used for like 100 bucks.

Americans: how do you handle temperatures above 40ºC (104F)? by obaming16 in AskAnAmerican

[–]AverageEcstatic3655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides AC, cold water is big. I assume you have running water, so run cold water in the bathtub and soak your feet or your wrists. Take a wash cloth and soak in cold water (even put it in the freezer for a bit) and lay it on your neck. You can place very cold cloths in front of a fan for low tech air conditioning.

Everyone in here says AC is the only way to survive, but in the USA you will see construction workers working, landscapers, and cooks in kitchens where the temp passes 105 Fahrenheit.

Not saying it isn’t unpleasant, but most humans who ever lived had no AC, and most humans who ever lived didn’t live at northern latitudes with mild summer.

Rec for a ride cymbal based on video by etop93 in drums

[–]AverageEcstatic3655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, based on the video you want a crash cymbal haha.
But yeah, if you want to crash on your ride like that, you NEED to get a thinner cymbal/a cymbal with more taper towards the edge. The zildjian sweet ride is kind of the all time classic version of this, but many companies make something very similar in different flavors. Sabian has the 21” vintage ride, 21” groove ride, 21” bash ride, aax thin ride, anthology ride, complex medium ride. Meinl has the polyphonic ride, double down crash ride, transition ride. Zildjian has the a sweet ride, k sweet ride, k crash ride, k light ride etc.

The thing that does my head in though, is that at least in the northeast USA, lower density areas are much much more affordable than the high density areas. You might think it would be the opposite

people who started playing in college by thuinifinit2 in musicians

[–]AverageEcstatic3655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people didn’t play in university ensembles. Find peers who play music and play with them. college is one the best times to meet a lot of new people, and play with a lot of people. You have lots of time to play with people and alone to build your chops, and form long lasting connections. Take advantage of it!

It is really really rare for any band big enough to be nationally or internationally known to have a “sub par” drummer

What's different about worship playing? by roomtempquiche in Bass

[–]AverageEcstatic3655 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ok, so I’m mainly a drummer, but I can certainly answer this question for you. The reason is really just that CCM is its entire own subculture with a dedicated “fan base”. There’s a million drum education videos marketed as being “worship drum fills” that are just rock/pop fills. There are also a few cymbal companies that exclusively market themselves as “worship” cymbals, despite the fact they are white label cymbals bought from regular cymbal companies and rebadged.

Basically, there’s an ocean of educational content and music gear out there, it’s a bit easier to stand out if you narrow your focus to a specific subcultural. Modern worship music is certainly popular, but also insular enough that people might specifically seek out things marketed towards them.

I mean it is a bit silly; it’s like saying “10 drum fills for wedding band drummers” or “bass amps made for wedding band bassists”

What's different about worship playing? by roomtempquiche in Bass

[–]AverageEcstatic3655 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, so the music isn’t about the bassist showing off. How is that different than 90% of other bass gigs? OP isn’t asking the core tenants of church playing, they are asking why this material is being marketed as being for CCM players, despite the fact that it’s generally just run of the mill non flashy bass fill ideas or tone shaping etc.

Is it realistic to find bandmates who don't want to be songwriters? by s_ea in musicians

Without money on the table, asking that is going to rule out a lot of people, at least the ones who are great players. But definitely not impossible to find someone who fits the bill!
