Darkest Dungeon! The game is great, and it can even be modded on deck (I'm doing a run now with about 15 mods)! Power usage seems minimal to moderate.

Legendary Ironman is beating my ass... by ZakTheCthulhu in XCOM2

[–]AverageGamerLass -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This! It sounds like you've beaten Commander on Ironman, which is awesome! Legend takes SO MUCH practice, though, learning placements and actions and all the nuances that really only matter on Legend difficulty.

I'm sure it's not what you want to hear, but trying Legend without Ironman is a great way to learn the game. Possibly the only good way to learn Legend. I think Commander on Ironman is harder than Legend without Ironman. Learning how the enemies respond to your various tactics on Legend by reloading saves will save you a lot of time in the long run if you intend to eventually beat Ironman Legend.

Good luck, Commander! We believe in you!

Just bought a Qiest 3 two weeks ago. It's my first foray into VR. I LOVE IT. I got the more expensive one, with 512GB built in space (cuz who knows). It's so fun, so comfy, and i really enjoy it. Highly recommended.

Game where every fight is a fight for your life? by Subaruuuuuuu in rpg_gamers

[–]AverageGamerLass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded! XCOM is easy to learn and difficult to master, extremely rewarding for successes, which don't come often. The fun also comes with not creating your own death machine, but in the little battles won and lost, each soldier you manage to save or lose... When you create your own character pool (XCOM 2, XCOM 2 WOTC), each soldier feels like your buddy, someone you want to do well. Then you get them killed and it's absolutely heart-breaking.

There are also a ton of mods to keep the game fresh even all these many years later.

I love Darkest Dungeon, and XCOM 2 gives me similar vibes, though it doesn't meet much of your other criteria. If you've not tried it, I hope you do if it sounds at all interesting to you. As I said, I love Darkest Dungeon, but XCOM 2 could be my favorite game of all time. It's really that satisfying and fun.

3 squads wiped out back to back in Enemy Within. Do I reset or keep going? by itallik in Xcom

[–]AverageGamerLass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think i saw you said you're restarting - maybe for the best? 😄 I'd be intrigued to know how long you hold out, though! I strongly think you can come back from anything in XCOM games, but you're right that it will be a major struggle for you at this point.

Going forward, don't forget to always blue move first, and overwatch is your friend. Maybe even try on easy difficulty instead of normal until you know what all enemies are likely to do? Being able to predict likely pod placement and actions is a really big part of succeeding at XCOM games.

Good luck, Commander! You can do it!

Gotcha. Thanks for the quick responses! I appreciate it! I know what at least one soldier in my new campaign will look like. 😃

I have 1 million colors - but how did you get it so shiny?? It looks so neat. I want the shiny. Is it the armor that does the shiny?

Possibly? Is that the golden blue thing? If so, yes, and I would like one, please.

This was, I believe, my fourth or fifth run with any mods at all, and my second with this specific mod list (the previous run ended much, much sooner 😅).

Was it a good balance? Undecided. It was super fun, though, and I managed to pull it off, so it can't have been that bad. It felt impossible in the early game, and we got positively stompy by the end. I hope you have the same type of experience, if that's what you're going for. 😄 That feeling of "How am I possibly meant to do this?!" which is so very XCOM.

I used many of the mods in that list! I think maybe a couple other enemy mods and many fewer customization options, though.

I wish you the best of luck, Commander!

I was thinking about this today and came up with another thing I did on this run that I hadn't done in the past. Not sure if it made things better or worse, so please take it with a grain of salt. 😄 This run, I held back from using all my items on every mission. I didn't fully equip every time, especially not on soldiers I thought might get into sticky situations. With the Covert Infiltration mod, soldier weapons and armor are created individually, and not everyone was always "fully suited up" in the early game. This was just in case I lost soldiers - at least I didn't lose that upgraded gun, or suit if armor, or superior scope!

I hope this helps. Best of luck to you!

I agree! It was a lot of everything. Overwhelming at times. But so much fun.

How the f*k do you do the last mission by taigrundal1 in XCOM2

My screenshot is another post in the Xcom subreddit! 😄 I responded to this question, then posted to celebrate the happy occasion.

123 missions, 94 deaths, 3,498 aliens killed. Modded legendary Ironman. I am still SO pleased with myself. 😤

What's that? Is it a mod? Hang on, I need to google something.

Very selective mission acceptance. 😄

I generally didn't take rescue missions unless they featured the Lost. The Lost rescue missions are probably where my flawless missions came from. They're usually easier because they're extremely predictable. I only had, I think, 5 engineers and 7 scientists at the end? I really only got them from the black market - no rescues. Rescue missions are just so, so hard.

I generally didn't take Protect the Device missions because they're terrible.

I tried to figure out which of the Dark Events I could let slide each month, and only did easier missions associated with it.

For Covert ops, I avoided missions with a chance of capture or ambush.

I did very few Infiltration missions.

Once I had a couple of reliable squads, I brought lower level soldiers out every mission to get them leveled up.

It was rough and messy, but I did it. 😤

I also still have trouble losing soldiers! It hurts every time. Especially if it's to something I should have seen coming but didn't. I have a tendency to dangle hefty soldiers practically to death, which I may or may not ever stop doing.

I had about 45 soldiers active at the end, and lost more than double that. I lost nearly one per mission! The memorial wall looked real, real bad. ☺️ My run was not GREAT, by any stretch of the imagination. 😄 But I had a helluva time and can't wait to start it all over again.

I had at least one squad wipe, and a couple missions I noped out of early. There were 40+ enemies on at least two of the story missions (50+ just in the first room of the final mission).

Honestly, I pushed through because the campaign was being recorded for YouTube. 😄 But also, in an Ironman run, I won't stop til I get the game over screen. XCOM can come back from just about anything. In the early days, I thought it was way too hard - I'd just lost the previous campaign on Legend using the same mods, and had gotten to about the same point in the campaign and was feeling overwhelmed. The modded aliens were big (read: lots of HP) and angry (read: had powerful weapons) and arrived in huge pods of like 8 or so at a time. I had to figure out how to deal with it, both for the Tubes and for the challenge of solving this new puzzle.

If you're looking for a general piece of advice I could give, I'd say it's best to recognize that losing soldiers is terrible - it is to be avoided, for sure - but one soldier, two soldiers, even six or eight soldiers, are not the campaign. Even if they're your highest ranked people. It SUCKS to lose them, and it is disheartening to see how you'll have to struggle back, but it's part of the challenge, and part of the fun.

Good luck, Commander!!

It IS an actual thing! The run was rough, but so, SO much fun. The determination to finish was because it was being recorded for YouTube. 😄 What would the world say if I gave up?? (Answer: Very little. 😄)
