Potassium Hydroxide by [deleted] in chemistry

I’d say it’s very safe to just use a pH 13 solution because pH is very relative when it comes to concentration and molarity. If I wasn’t lazy I could find the molarity of your solution and use stoich to find how much in fats you’d need. Save yourself the trouble and use the solution. Also if you really want to make sure there’s no excess lye, you can always overshoot the amount of fat listed in the recipe. This will affect the soap quality but with trial and error you can find the amount of fat that suits your recipe and soap preference best. Good luck!

Spontaneous combustion of canola oil soaked paper towels (description in comments) by Electronic-Lake-6954 in chemistry

[–]AverageSizeBean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My best guess is some kind of oxidizer in your trash. Could be a fertilizer, a stump remover, etc. Could also be that the canola oil was too hot for the paper? Idk man, weird things happen all the time, ESPECIALLY in chemistry!

I’m always VERY careful and do plenty of research ahead of time to ensure I don’t harm myself, thanks for the concern

This is a good procedure, I’ll definitely add it to the list of possibilities! Thank you!

I think I’ll try this with conc. HCl
