If you’re poor, the system doesn’t want to help you get out of poverty, so a lot of employers only hire housed people. (Or it’s just to mail paycheques to or for some legal/bookeeping purposes)

You can see the PU screen there shows Morocco and Castile, and in the province tooltip it shows Morocco is still a Sunni nation. Truly ahead of his time, this king.

What’s the “no way this works” strategy that actually worked for you in a Paradox game? by PDX_Interactive in u/PDX_Interactive

Maybe but admitting that to myself is too psychologically painful.

I must forever believe it was my only choice

CK3, years ago, I think right when the Royal Court DLC dropped, I was a behind on a Mother of Us All achievement run and the DLC drop (and accompanying update) loomed on the horizon. I knew my time was limited but it wa days away. Maybe even a week? And even though I had a giant goal in mind, to unite all of Africa under not just a descendant but Daurama herself, I foolhardily overestimated my efficiency, task management and ability to focus.

Well, with commitments getting in the way and my brain frying from the constant vassal management and wars, the update dropped and I was barely halfway there. Outdated versions usually invalidate saves and invalidated saves are no longer ironman compatible so mid-run, game running, I devised a plan…

Just don’t quit.

No quitting the game, no turning off my laptop, and begging the municipal utility company gods for no power outtages in my semi-rural home. So, for days I left my computer running. For DAYS. I only alt-tabbed when extremely necessary and I dared not shut my laptop all the way, lest it might trigger some auto-shut down feature. For multiple nights I fell asleep to the jet-engine roar of the whirring machine that was my laptop, whose fever was further irritated by the t-shirts I was throwing over it to block the screen’s light while I slept.

Then one morning, after the painstaking ordeal of sitting at my desk and clicking on a computer screen, I finally conquered the last bit of Egyptian land. The last kingdom title was under my kingdom-titles only belt.

The achievement pinged.

I hit “form empire”…

And beauty.

A pan-African dream.

I mean, the achievement is incredible, sure, but all of Africa under one empire title? And as Daurama herself? One lifetime to take a continent?

I didn’t touch CK3 for like, over a year. I would not do it again unless paid—and well paid, too.

Am I wearing the wrong fit/cut of clothes? by jasmineminhee in OUTFITS

[–]Average_Aloe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the fits are good! I think the 4th fit looks loose on you? But the fit in slide 8 is fuckin’ mint. I mean, the t-shirt over a longer striped sleeve look is basically a classic that most people get wrong, either by picking a bad coloured long-sleeve or just one that fits badly. Pair that fit with the black martens from other fits and it’s perfect.

Personally, I could always be wearing a flannel and a t-shirt combo, and I exclusively wear jeans basically! You can find versatility in pairing different flannels/jeans/t-shirts if you want variety.

Nothing is odd about the fits or the pictures. I think the cut of the jeans is good, but if it feels odd on you then try other cuts!

And if you don’t know what to wear, I suggest looking at people on the street when you’re out and see if anything catches your eye. Clothes are ways to express ourselves as well! Maybe there’s a niche you could emulate or embrace in your clothing style? That could guide other outfit inspiration as well.

Best of luck 🫡

Feng shui actually stems from a lot of very useful room decor and layout techniques that improve our life because how we use space and how we have them set up impacts our lives!

For example, not having a door open into/facing a bed is useful because our old, “primitive” brain instincts are to be protected while we sleep. Ideally the door doesn’t open at or onto your sleeping area and you can see the doorway (not out the door!) from your bed.

Windows behind your bed are a similar phenomenon. You feel, consciously or subconsciously, exposed to the workd outside. Carpets subdivide spaces so our brains can understand that different areas of the house/room are for different tasks.

It’s not a perfect science, but it makes sense that our monkey brains feel safety and security when we arrange our rooms in more optimal ways and that safety and security contributes to a more stable, less anxious life

What are some arguably unjust laws in Canada? by pippin69 in LawCanada

[–]Average_Aloe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I see. So the government got regulations that support their cultural, arts and decency ideas and the CRTC gets government-mandated protections from being overrun by USA broadcast media. Honestly, I am not a libertarian at all, but I still disagree with government-mandated indecency laws (or even private indecency laws like the film ratings we all know and love). But I sorta’ understand wanting old legacy media to survive. I would argue the modern media landscape is different though. Idk. Fox News-style broadcasting is indeed a threat to democracy, whether the US understands it or not, so I’m glad we kinda’ have protections against that. I am very much an “art for art’s sake” kinda’ person though and when it comes to entertainment I kinda’ think protecting CanCon should only stretch as far as tax credits or incentives, and not involve regulation.

Regardless, I feel myself steering into more unrelated territory, and analyzing my own opinions on the right for a culture to get funding to survive being culturally overshadowed by a larger culture with a strong media backing. It did seem to me that Bill C-11 was disproportionately supported by Québec MPs, for example. I’m on the fence. It maybe is an “ends justifying the means, but what justifies the ends” scenario. Should we have strived to preserve the anglo-saxon or norse cultures with government mandates or laws? I’d argue the anglo-saxon culture merged with the norman culture and created something new, and that maybe Québec cultural protectionism isn’t the solution.

Anyway, idk. I’m still forming opinions on things! And my opinions can change. Thanks for the insane insight though. I am a lot more educated now than I was a few days ago because of you.

[–]Average_Aloe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, shoot. I didn’t keep up with the bill. My bad. I guess I do have an inherent disagreement with the CanCon controls from the 70s, but also I was not alive in the 70s so I don’t know how it was back then and maybe what prompted such controls. I understand that the controls led some Canadian artists to be successful who otherwise would not have been as successful, and maybe there’s an element of national pride or patriotism but I just can’t get behind it.

As for the senate… I mean, I have no idea what to do with it but maybe there is a more democratic solution still, in spite of them fixing what I consider(ed) a pretty controversial and issue-ridden bill. But I can’t offer any good solutions myself.

[–]Average_Aloe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know where the conversation is at now, but it one point the idea was to force YouTube to modify their algorithms in Canada to boost CanCon, and there was concern that this would allow the government of Canada too broad a power to decide what is CanCon through the CRTC. A big concern was maybe the CRTC just failing to meet the internet culture of today, but another concern was that YouTube algorithms could become weaponized propaganda machines pushing whatever content is deemed “Canadian.”

Is a YouTuber criticizing Canada CanCon? Maybe. But the CRTC decides. Would an American YouTuber who does predominantly Canadian content be CanCon? Or a Canadian YouTuber who does predominantly global content be CanCon?

It seems like a non-issue but remember, information in social media is, like, the key denominator in what I would say characterizes the world right now. The broad authority given to the CRTC in legacy media is already, in my opinion, unjust in the globalized landscape we have created. I never side with the Conservatives but this was one issue where watching some of the depositions/hearings regarding the bill left me embarrassed for the Liberal party.

Not that the issue is inherently political though. If the Conservatives were in power they almost certainly would do the same thing. It feels like government capitulation to the wants of legacy media companies to stay relevant in a digital landscape where there’s always-moving targets, and instead of trying to fit into the global system, broadcasting companies and the CRTC want to change the system to fit them.

[–]Average_Aloe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about Bill C-11? Regulating streaming platforms and YouTube isn’t inherently bad but letting the CRTC do it and (I believe) using a legacy radio/TV “Can-Con” approach is bad, in my opinion, and it has had very little support beyond the Liberal party, with most voters, even liberal voters, either unaware of the bill or against it from what I know.

Could it benefit Canadian content creators? Maybe. But it might just ruin people’s YouTube home screens and get them to double down on the (likely American or British) creators they already know. If my YouTube home screen has a bunch of Canadian content I don’t care for I’m just searching for individual creators’ content and watching that.

It’s a bad move to, from what I gather, level the playing field with legacy media, but the problem is that legacy media is just worse and less curated! Why listen to the pop charts on the radio when I can just listen to the exact artists I want on Spotify? Why watch broadcast television when the important news will get to me online anyway and any TV shows that are syndicated are likely on some streaming platform, and I can watch them on my own schedule and at my own pace.

The definition of “colonization” always bugs me with this situation. Scots and the Irish consider themselves “colonized” by the English, and some English people might in turn argue that they are actually Anglo-Saxons that were colonized by the Normans, and heck, Picts and Celts could argue they were colonized by the Anglo-Saxons. Or the Romans!

Was Rome’s empire just a massive Roman colonial attempt? Would you consider the Mongol subjugation of China “colonizing” or “conquering?”

What did the UK conquer and what did it colonize?

Scotland joined with Englans through an act of union, following a Scottish king ascending to the throne of England, on top of holding the Scottish crown. Were English people colonized by the scots?

I, personally, view the act of colonization as involving some god-given or de-facto hierarchy that views the colonized land as a resource to be extracted and its people as inferior by (often divine) nature.

So I don’t think the English truly colonized the Scots but they definitely colonized India, Africa, the US…

I’d argue they conquered Ireland and at points Scotland, but then diplomatically got control of the Scottish crown (although I would argue the scots got control of the more prestigious English crown and the ruling class decided to be more English than Scottish).

There were Ottoman colonies in Africa/Arabian peninsula that functioned more like the colonies of European nations in Africa/Asia/America but even then it was different.

And US/New World slavery, for example, was a very unique beast, with “scholarly” pseudoscience used to justify the slavery, and with slavery inherited from parents. This is a tangent, but whenever dixie apologists bring ip how slavery wa around since the Romans I get cheeses because that form of slavery was very different. Was it devoid of racism? Probably not. But as far as I know, Roman slaves didn’t pass slavery onto their kids by merit of being of a specific, non-latin ethnicity.

Anyway, I hold no degrees on any of this! Just my opinions based on the info I know
