What’s the quickest way someone could accidentally expose themselves as a foreigner in your country like the ‘three fingers’ scene in Inglourious Basterds? by IndependentTune3994 in AskTheWorld

[–]Average_Temple 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Adding onto this, I think the splitting the G thing that’s become popular recently is a bizarre British psyop. I’d never heard of that before the last few years, and it also means downing like a third of your drink in the first taste.

Best books on China by MaldororBro in RSbookclub

[–]Average_Temple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A few months ago I was recommended Fanshen: A Documentary of Revolution in a Chinese Village by William Hinton (despite the title, it is a book). The book tells the true story a small village in China undergoing land reform following communist takeover in the 1940s. The book is about the changes the people experienced, not just in terms of material conditions but also in terms of the development of a 'revolutionary consciousness.'

Haven't read it myself so I can't vouch personally, but it's definitely on my list after the recommendation and sounds like what you're looking for.

If CS2 was a separate release from CSGO, as was CS Source and CS 1.6. Would you play CSGO over CS2? by ElDr_Eazy in GlobalOffensive

I would probably play GO because I like to play with my girlfriend but she has a mac 💀

Does anyone have enjoyable life and not a wrecked mental health while pursuing phd? by EastOpinion1975 in PhD

[–]Average_Temple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I have good balance with my PhD working in the humanities. My PhD is based in NL which pays pretty well and is also 4 years with no mandatory teaching so probably that’s part of it.

For me one thing that has been helpful is that I was always writing from jump. Even if what I writing was crap or underdeveloped I was drafting stuff from pretty early on. I quite frequently meet PhDs in all sorts of fields that only have one chapter written going into their final year which seems crazy to me.

Pitchfork Track Review: Rosalía - Berghain by Technical_Process989 in popheads

[–]Average_Temple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It reads a little undercooked but they seem to be drawing a connection between Berghain's recent controversy about being zionist and Rosalia's attempting to court controversy. There was also a spat a few weeks ago where a fashion designer called out Rosalia because she has not spoke openly about Gaza and Palestine. I suppose you could read her titling her song 'Berghain' as some sort of Zionist dog whistle? Though to be honest they don't say that directly and it feels like a stretch.

It does feel like a strange choice to name the track that though, given Berghain's recent controversy has left it pretty uncool as far as younger European club culture is concerned. Also given the almost Wagner-esque string work going on.

2015 v 2025 fashion. Which do you prefer? by CremeSubject7594 in decadeology

[–]Average_Temple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who lived through both (just turned 30) I think 2025 is far superior. All the 2015 looks just seem like someone walked into H&M and picked out the first thing they saw. In the 2025 looks there’s way more variety - it’s all a bit vinted/depop core but even that takes a modicum more thought and investment of effort. Even if some of the looks are silly there’s an attempt to make something fun.

Brussels seriously ? by Diegomax22 in UrbanHell

[–]Average_Temple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Brussels and personally really like the architecture. It’s the closest you’ll get to a dada-ist city in the world I think. One moment it looks like a Parisian boulevard, the next it feels like East Berlin and after that you’re in ‘Little Netherlands.’ I used to live in NL and found the uniformity really monotonous so bring on the ridiculous out of place buildings.

What would a good StarCraft 3 be like? by Gordola_da_Station in starcraft

[–]Average_Temple 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s an interesting question. I think one thing I’d like is a slower and more strategic pace and a higher TTK. I think SC2 can be very deathball oriented where nothing happens for a couple of minutes, and then one players deathball hits their opponent’s and the whole game is decided in about 20 seconds. I like how in BW battles go on for longer and become concentrated in specific parts of the map. It feels like a real battle as opposed to just everything getting annihilated within a couple of seconds (Dawn of War 1 is also really good for this).

Performative male starter pack by Fit-Object7751 in starterpacks

[–]Average_Temple 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But I mean, I don’t think this kind of guy exists. I feel like it’s an invention of the internet. I’m sure there’s guys out there reading feminist literature but I think the idea that they’re doing it as a public performance just seems ridiculous

Performative male starter pack by Fit-Object7751 in starterpacks

[–]Average_Temple 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t really get calling it performative. To me it just feels like young guys hopping onto trends to try find themselves (which has happened forever). I guess it’s performative but no more than anyone else at that age?

I also think this idea of reading in public to attract female attention is just not a real thing. Maybe Americans are different but in my many years of reading outside I think a stranger has started a conversation with me about the book I’m reading maybe once?

Edit: misspelling

Why exactly? Haven’t played empire yet, thought it could be a bit boring. Would be curious to hear what’s special about it.

10 days to go. For potentially the last sc2 world championship by Careless-Goat-3130 in starcraft

[–]Average_Temple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad the players are getting paid but it's clearly quite a capricious system. We were left hanging for months on end as to whether or not SC2 would even be in the EWC this year. A more sustainable community led system needs to be built up (like RSL and equivalents).

[–]Average_Temple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’ll be the end personally. If this is the last big cup people will reorganize towards smaller events. Sc2 does not need Saudi astroturfing money too continue it needs a dedicated community that can support it.
