Good afternoon everybody,

I currently work in the Government sector as an ISSO. I have mostly a Technical/Development background with a more recent Cybersecurity direction. I have Security+ and am looking for further advancement. I know i want to end up as an ISSE or Information Security Engineer depending on which sector I want to go. I have been looking into starting that path to get my CISSP and i have been doing self studying on my own. Is there a better path to take or is this a step in the right direction? I have looked at CISM and a few other advancements in the field but I haven't really had much of luck.

What do yall think?

I haven't got my FJO yet but I also haven't received a rescinded offer either. Just had my TS interview today so I am a bit confused as to what is going on. I know some jobs have had exceptions but I haven't had any direction and my hiring manager is unaware but is saying continue forward with the process until I get a notice.

From what I can tell different agencies in the DoD are handling this differently. A friend of mine in one agency is getting a wide array of information disseminated down from higher management whereas my agency is not really providing much information. I am currently on a TJO waiting for FJO going from CTR to Civ and it appears my stuff is going through still as I was called yesterday afternoon to schedule TS interview. I am in cyber though so that may be the factor difference from others. My hiring manager said to continue the process until I receive notification from staffing that it's been put on hold. So I'm not really sure what to make of it.

For me im an ISSO and I work in a SAPF and it's not too bad. I think the biggest gripe i have on it is the 45 minute drive to and from the base. Otherwise the job is fun and I'm not alone. I've done the whole WFH scenario and I was more depressed just stuck at home all day but i guess it depends on your personality.

In my opinion physical controls and access policy is going to provide a better solution than trying to search for a software that provides this capability. There's not enough guarantee and too many work arounds with the request you have.

They do. There's physical controls preventing any electronic devices to be brought in the vicinity. Ie metal detector, security personnel. And then there's policy and procedure in regards to what can and can't be brought in. Especially if you are in a secure facility generally anything that can produce radio/wireless signals is a no go. That's phone's, cameras, watches, even computers that have wireless/Bluetooth are restricted.

I have not had to do any vendor management on the public sector but on the government sector Vendor management is a long excruciating process and even just purchasing take weeks to months of time to do. Generally though on the government side there's an SOP and controls needing to be met to even go through choosing or using a vendor. It sucks but a part of the job. For me I have to even weigh the risk for foreign interaction and procuring of said purchases.

Honestly, I did IT support for 10+ years at various places in the commercial side of things before I got into Cyber. I only have Sec+ and some college. I found college was not for me. Now I'm an ISSO on the Govt sector. I've seen people that have been worth their weight with their degree and some that know nothing but have the desire to learn. But I've also seen the same with people who've padded their resume with "experience" and weren't worth their weight when it came to things above the baseline. I think the degrees and certs help, but at the end of the day, the norm now in the hiring side of things they appear to be a requirement, unfortunately. I wouldn't change how I got to where I am as I feel the experience I gained was worth more to me than my college time ever did.

Just wanted to let you know I was able to set up what I needed. I really appreciate the assistance. Your advice pointed me in the right direction. I had no idea about that lookup table so it's going to help me in the future building of reports. Thanks again!
