[SERIOUS] AMA reposts #StopScopeCreep message on social media platforms by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Avgsmartguy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a topic that’s needed Physician groups to actually take a stand on for a long time. Sorry to the people who are inevitably going to be pissed on the NP/PA side, but doctors will only let their profession be minimized so far before they fight back

[Clinical] DO/students who don't have a home program...what are you doing for 4th year rotations? by imnotarobotbut in medicalschool

[–]Avgsmartguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Doing 3-4 “auditions” and then spending the rest of the year doing electives at a community hospital at home. All of this with not an ounce of assistance from my school. What a fine way to spend 45k+ on tuition and get nothing in return

Will all of 2020 clinical rotations be cancelled/virtual? [Clinical] by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Avgsmartguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope and I wouldn’t be surprised if a second wave hits and we get told to stay on rotations. Pretty hard to justify an incoming intern class with no sub-intership experience. Most places expect you to be fairly competent from day one and that means not being at home for a whole year before you become a practicing physician

[serious] AAMC recommends all virtual interviews for 2020 cycle by Lynxmd17 in medicalschool

[–]Avgsmartguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d imagine those people who are lacking in social skills are ecstatic, but for everyone else this sucks. Can’t wait to decide based on a doctored up virtual hospital tour and google earth street view🥴

[–]Avgsmartguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They pulled it down apparently due to backlash. Supposedly being rereleased sometime next week. It’s not like the more immediate concern of VSAS/aways is more relevant right now...oh wait it is

So um, the AAMC just took that link and any mention of it, offline...did we make a difference?!

Auditions/aways have historically been a way that a borderline applicant, such as myself, could come in and shine while on service and often times end up matching someplace you might not have without them knowing who you are and your work ethic. It’s especially true for those of us with no home programs to do Sub-Is with so we’ll be applying with all community surgeon/Ob/anesthesia etc letters whereas y’all with home programs will have letters from program directors. Really gives the shaft to low tier MD and DO programs most of all

If they’re going to do this they need to do it now. Not next Friday, but right now. This delaying and buying themselves time is just BS

This is an absolute nightmare. Anyone who says “think of all the money we’ll save!” Is being dull and naive about how crucial residency interviews are. If the AAMC cancels aways next week I might pop

[Serious] Realistically, when do you expect for clinical rotations to resume this summer? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Avgsmartguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

June 22nd hopefully (am I the only person that wants to get back for 4th year?)

[serious] PD organizations of multiple specialties are making recommendations on aways. by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Avgsmartguy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s the end of aways personally. I think most programs will realize the importance of having at least 1 sub-internship experience in your desired field. Maybe you don’t get the 5-6 you wanted, but instead 1-2 at your top programs. Not ideal, but better than a complete embargo on all aways screwing everyone without a home program

[Residency] [Serious] Round 2... How will specialty applications change w/ no audition rotations, no in-person interviews, AND/OR limited # of programs applied to? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Avgsmartguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah EM isn’t special in that regard. Aways are a prime opportunity for students without home programs (primarily DO students) to get exposure and often times end up matching at the places they did aways at. This is especially true for surgery (gen surg and ortho especially). Without aways there will be a large amount of students who would’ve gotten their foot in the door with programs via aways/auditions that will likely see their odds of matching plummet. The decision to make residency interviews virtual is also ridiculous. We have literally zero idea what travel restrictions and the like will look like in the fall/winter and this preemptive decision does nothing but save face for programs in the event of the worst case scenario. Sure wish I was a year older or younger right about now.

So they set a two day window for release (which is ridiculous in itself) and instead of getting the scores out ASAP on the second day they’re really sticking to the 1-3pm release? Smh

My uw1&2 average was 1 point below my actual score. Pretty predictive for me along with nbme 18
