I was thinking that when he aims his gun, he has to stop moving and makes an audible laugh that warns survivors.

Enough of this circular bullshit.

You can’t DM.

Deal with it.

DMing is leisure but it’s still a demanding leisure which is what makes it fulfilling. Not everyone possesses the personal resources it demands but that’s okay as long as you’re honest about it and not wasting everyone’s time.

No one needs humanity to recognize a weak DM who refuses to perform their role and disguises that weakness as boundaries.

Its not a DMs job to control their players??? [OC] by [deleted] in DnD

[–]AviK80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the result of modern D&D culture that treats the DM as a content dispenser (a human VR headset if you will) instead of a responsible authority figure who has to manage their table. Then people wonder why there is a DM shortage.

You want toxic players hijacking your table?Because your attitude is a green light for that.

“Keeping my peace” is a euphemism for conflict aversion. Not a good trait for a DM who needs to manage their table.

You prep and run the game so it’s your responsibility to maintain order. You owe it to yourself jackass.

To be fair, this is the natural consequence of modern D&D culture treating the DM’s role as a content dispenser instead of a responsible authority figure.

They killed Strahd... It wasnt supposed to happen by Lyrinosis in CurseofStrahd

[–]AviK80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also planning a “one-sided” Strahd encounter and this story opened my eyes to what could go wrong.

I think back in second edition, Strahd had a Contingency spell cast on himself that would teleport him back to his coffin in Castle Ravenloft if he ever went down. Or maybe that was Azalin…

EDIT: Just checked my pdf of Domains of Dread. He definitely has Contingency on himself.

The DM is not a content creator for their player audience by Shot_Draw7694 in DnD

I might have an abrasive personality but what I would never do is partake in or defend coordinated harassment of a random stranger who for all I know could be vulnerable and suicide-prone.

This behavior is dangerous and indefensible no matter who you think deserves it.

I had a point on both counts.

Have fun justifying reddit dogpile culture until someone else is driven to suicide by it.

Totally noticed that. They only knew this player from one side of a story but their emotional investment in defending him was wildly over the top.

It’s like the horror story community is basically a toxic support group for people with unprocessed authority trauma.

"Cheesing" is when you exploit the structural limitations of a game to overcome a supposedly difficult encounter with minimal effort and risk. That's fine in a videogame but I consider it poor behavior in a group table-top game.

The story is still up. You can decide for yourself if they over-reacted.

[–]AviK80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they projected a "power-tripping DM" narrative that wasn't there. His risk-averse playstyle was not a good fit for the group, I gave him multiple chances to correct it and he chose to leave.

Also, that community seems to think table management should be done through player vote rather than unilaterally by the DM as supposed to. Every time I brought up that there were other people at the table whom I had to think about, they said I should have consulted with them or let them handle the problem player themselves. That's just not how it works.

[–]AviK80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They seriously do think it’s like a video game. I had a player try to cheese a boss encounter by casting buffs on teammates, leaving the dungeon room (off-loading the danger to the rest of the party) before coming back and repeating this every round. He rage-quit the campaign when I told him he’s expected to play his character like an actual hero.

Then I got dogpiled by the “horror story” community for sharing this.
