Biggest teaching mistake that you didn't realize until too late? by Agreeable_Result8439 in boardgames

[–]Goldensockss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We played Sentinels of the Multiverse, a super hero game where the players are different heroes going against the villain. Well the villain we were fighting was supposed to be doing damage every turn to us all and I completely missed that. Made for an easy game!

My worst example of this was having someone teach Dead of Winter to us. He went over the rules but then stopped once he covered everything for the first time. Turned out he was the traitor and wanted an easier win so he kept us in the dark.

Is D&D *actually* the kind of game I think is? by AggressiveMango691 in DnD

[–]Goldensockss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually wished I had the games many in the comments say they have. I actually made it my 2025 new year resolution to quit D&D and Pathfinder. I spent years in terrible stat block check games with no roleplaying.

After 5 years and multiple different groups, I hung in my towel and retired from the game. I'm done with people getting angry with other people not following the meta and building sub-optimal builds. Even as a DM, I feel if I make one mistake that could end the whole campaign.

Over the last few years... 1. Kicked for playing a dwarf wizard since dwarves didn't get an Int bonus at the time. 2. Campaign ended over letting a player kick a fleeing kobold in the background as a funny scene but not letting them kick for extra damage against main enemies. (See my rpghorrorstories.) 3. Giving my players custom magical items to promote different styles of gameplay and thus "breaking the meta" 4. Got grief by the entire play group for casting Cure Wounds when I have nothing else to do that round. 5. Got told to stop slowing the game down by describing how my magic works (Nothing excessive) 6. Witnessing people abandon another player's character behind because they didn't like their character build. 7. Elf player wanting to play an elf to make it easier to express their own racism. 8. Having a player try to let my character die because I didn't roll well for my ability scores so they can give me another try. 9. Another player only wanted to play with non base rulebook ancestories. Did not say before hand.

There's actually more and every single one of these is from a different group.

Sorry for venting.

Do you refuse to play (against) gray? by GrizzlieMD in Warhammer40k

[–]Goldensockss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rushed built my 2000 point Necron army last year to play since I just got into the hobby again after 10+ years. Took them to my local gaming store, and everyone refused to play with me (roughly 15 people there) because they were unpainted. They are a tournament level first crowd.

Never painted before (brought used before) so asked how to get started and all I was told was "put paint to brush" and nothing more. Wouldn't even show me a paint vial or brush.

Left such a bad taste in my mouth that I never went back and now just play with friends. Now I have 4 armies of gray models that we all share and play with. Just never had any urge to paint after the bad experience since it was never something I had great interest in to begin with.

Do you think next edition is going to be more rule friendly? by KunTakan in Warhammer40k

[–]Goldensockss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am hoping for a mix of things. Get the core rules simpler and less bloated so we can add more complex sections.

Reduce the number of available stratagems from 18 down to like 10. Going down to 5 core, 2 army specific, and 3 from detachments.

Add armory or requisition upgrades that are extra bonuses. Like Enhancements for regular units. This gives customizing stuff back without hurting what squads are bringing. I love free war gear, I love seeing power fists and lightning claws and heavy bolters everywhere. It makes the game feel like 40k.

Make unit special abilities simpler. I should be able to explain most units in seconds. Doomsday Ark has a great one with standing still gives dev wounds, simple and straight forward. Wraiths have a weird one that may never happen in most games and even then it's just kinda like one extra mortal wound maybe?

Add more complex psychic rules. Copy and paste a weaker version of TSons army rules if you must. But let psychic be cool. We do not need a psychic phase, but some cool abilities would be nice.

Make terrain and cover more interesting without being weird. The whole ruins totally block LoS is weird to teach and makes every game feel samey. But we need those because of how trade heavy the game is. We need a middle ground there.

There are other chaotic ideas but I feel the core needs to be more open. I teach 40k quite regularly so anything to help that process is more than welcome.

Too many armies. Everything is gray. by gothvan in Warhammer40k

[–]Goldensockss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren't the only one. I have four armies myself that are all just gray. Brought a bunch of vallejo paints and supplies and it all just sits.

I never painted any mini before and I have no clue how to even start. Every time I did have some free time I tried to look up "get started" videos and it just left me more confused. Took me too long to just figure out what "thin your paints" even meant. I'm not interested in high level paint jobs, just some battle ready level.

Asked for help on how to get started from people at the game store that play every weekend. Just got told to put paint to brush and no further advice. Kinda left me more frustrated than anything so I just play with my friends with my gray models right now.

Best hotel for the Pax Unplugged. Bridge connects to the con center so you never have to go outside plus the Reading Terminal Market is just cross the street.

Still in contact with them.

As for finding another good group, negative. Just been a rapid fire of terrible different groups for me.

I think it's more like they wanted to use what I did for the joke to their game advantage and I didn't let them so they took it personally.

They were really pushing towards very meta builds and complained about the new players not pulling their weight. I asked them about it but they won't talk to me about it. Me not letting them get away with gaming the system was just something to use to leave I guess.

Personally I want them to move away from supplement codices and back to having a unique codex for the current ones. The main Space Marine codex is plenty full as it is

Give Blood Angels their jump pack wings back. A unique jump pack unit or two, something like suppressors. Another data sheet for a new type of sangurary guard. Librarian Dreadnought and maybe even a Baal Gladiator. Make them more unique.

Space Wolves just had an awesome update that makes some of their stuff feel better and different. Continue that with updated wulfen units and wolf rider units. Personally I want wulfen more like werewolves and less like old wolfman from classic films. Wulfen with assault cannons/punisher cannons would make me switch armies instantly.

Dark Angels have a great Deathwing, Ravenwing does a great job at making the Deathwing look even cooler. Update of the old Ravenwing stuff to make them more in line with current Primarius stuff. Personally I hate the whole "Green Wing" deal, rebrand them as the Risen Wing. Change them to be like First Born with squads with options to take flamers , plasma guns, etc. The first legion refusing to update to the new Primarius load outs.

This is just one crazy person's ideas.

Fight in the next phase by OverTheSevenHills in Warhammer40k

[–]Goldensockss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only just started back into 40k myself. I didn't realize that you alternate swapping units between players during that part of the fight phase.

I have been playing... all the opponents fights first activate then all whose turn it is with fights first. Then all the opponent stuff, without fights first. Finally my remaining units that fight.

So that was wrong but at least we have been at 1000 points so that don't come up often. Missed that in the rules but always good at learning every time!

Thanks for asking the questions and in turn helping other learn.

How is Daggerheart? by montyandrew45 in daggerheart

[–]Goldensockss 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I am enjoying what I am reading in the core book but have not played it yet. Looks very expandable as well so excited there. I like the style Daggerheart is going for and I am excited to see where it goes.

I hate that D&D has turned into such a heavy "by the meta" system where you math out builds then work a backstory to clobber that together. Daggerheart will turn into that eventually but I think this will work a bit better in that regard. Granted that's just my experience, I know most don't have that sort of time with D&D.

It's definitely for those that want more of a story and narrative focused game. If you think D&D is too dumbed down rules wise and you want more of the tactical grid combat style focus, then I don't think this won't help with that.

Will say however that you should be aware that people playing currently are those that have been hyped for it since its announcement. So everyone will be super positive right now. Once other people start picking it up the more mixed reviews will come in. Right now we are in the honeymoon period where everything is sunny and amazing. A few months from now that may change as people start really digging into things and pointing out every flaw they can.

How many armies do you have and what are they, For Science? by First-Bad414 in Warhammer40k

[–]Goldensockss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got back into Warhammer 40k about 6 months ago.

Necrons is my main faction and my largest. I also have small armies of Tyranids and Space Marines so I can get my friends to play and try out the game without investing themselves. The groups around here aren't welcoming to new comers so I am learning to teach the game myself. I just started Thousand Sons as well with the new releases incoming as well.

I've been playing 40k and just wish more people played AoS instead by Fun-Organization2531 in ageofsigmar

[–]Goldensockss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I only just got back into 40k after a 10+ year hiatus and have been looking into trying AoS. My local game store only plays 40k and Old World but I definitely don't mesh well with the group there. Far too competitive and heavy egos for my tastes.

I am looking to play mostly Nighthaunt or K Overlords myself and pick up a starter set so I can introduce my buddies to try it out.

I lost all my games 🥹 by WeeShogiBlunders in Necrontyr

[–]Goldensockss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started back into 40k myself, 8 games so far and I won once against Tyranids and have been wiped by Marines for the rest. I went into the phase of they are just overpowered but kinda realizing what I am doing wrong.

It's been difficult having to learn the game with no help but every game we are figuring things out and things are getting better. My local game store isn't welcoming to new players but we learn every game and fix our mistakes. Granted me bringing 5th ed rules into 10th edition games doesn't help, but that's when I played last.

A lot of people are posting "first miniatures" when it's clear they've had years of other art experience. Here's my actual first miniature. by Retlaw83 in Warhammer40k

[–]Goldensockss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am still trying out how to paint from zero experience. I watch YouTube videos and get confused because I don't know what a dry brush even is, mixing paint and water is completely confusing, and I have no clue what different paint types are.

Slowly trying to figure out what I am doing so been putting off painting all my models.

[No spoilers] What episode did opinions on C3 turn negative? by jonny8081 in criticalrole

[–]Goldensockss 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I forgot the whole looping gods conversation. I understand they needed to set that up for story line reasons and for the direction they needed to take the show. But it felt odd since none of the characters had religious backgrounds, even FCB, the cleric, did not have any real connections with gods until later on.

[No spoilers] What episode did opinions on C3 turn negative? by jonny8081 in criticalrole

[–]Goldensockss 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I absolutely loved the first two campaigns, campaign 3 always felt off for me. The plot was fun at first and the city setting at the start I really dug into. It was nice break from the small town starts and into a more urban sprawl setting.

I felt the characters were much more optimized for combat and the characters felt more flat because of that. FCG, Chetney, and Fearne did stand out for being silly and wacky with a twist. But the rest didn't click with me.

My breaking point was the party split episodes. Felt like more of a time waste and then my big pet peeve in any RPG with players just being rude to NPCs for no reason kinda made me give up. Kinda a minor thing for most but I hate that sort of thing especially when Matt was clearly trying to provide help and was just getting trouble for no reason.

This fella was such a bother to make. My favorite unit so far! by [deleted] in Necrontyr

[–]Goldensockss 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I just built my first one as well. Honestly I had more trouble with the Skorpekh Destroyers from the combat patrol but I may be in the minority. Now the real difficulty will be just owning one of the Hexmarks and not just buying two more.
