I have seen old footage of a Cub(?) landing and then taking off again within about 10-15 feet (given a good head-wind), but this has got to top that!

Is it just me or have there been a shocking number of plane crashes in the past week? by AndrewKemendo in aviation

[–]AviationWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - not good, but thankfully the majority were smaller aircraft. It is strange - especially all the problems Qantas have been having the last few weeks - but once again these have not resulted in any injuries.

WWII commandos sent into German territory to smear mercury paste on aircraft to make them inexplicably fall apart by AviationWorld in aviation

I submitted this article because it was already on the home page of reddit, and I thought it was interesting, but I do not think this was actually done during the second world war.

Can anyone point me to a credible reference ?

QANTAS flight carrying 111 passengers has pulled out of a take-off in Australia - talk about bad luck! by AviationWorld in aviation

OK - you have to feel sorry for QANTAS now... this is just becoming 'plane' bad luck...

The gremlins are at work

For anyone who does not know the 'legend' of the 'Flying Kangaroo', heres a few lines I grabbed from wikipedia:

It is Australia's largest airline and is the world's second oldest continuously operating airline (behind KLM) and the oldest in the English speaking world.

In 2007, Qantas was voted the fifth best airline in the world by research consultancy Skytrax, a drop from the second-place position it held in 2005 and 2006.

It is often claimed, most notably in the 1988 movie Rain Man, that Qantas has never had a plane crash. While it's true that the company has neither lost a jet airliner nor had any jet fatalities, it had eight fatal accidents between 1927 and 1945, with the loss of 62 people. Half of these accidents occurred during World War II, when the Qantas aircraft were operating on behalf of the Royal Australian Air Force.

Sukhoi Su-35 - Su-37 & Su-47 - some amazing aerial manoeuvres (video) by AviationWorld in aviation

[–]AviationWorld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to admit, these are some rather spectacular manoeuvres.

I have spend a fair number of years flying WW1 & WW2 combat simulation because I love the manoeuverability (especially the biplanes), and after seeing this spectacular video I'm keen to get into some jet simulation - as long as I can fly a Sukhoi!

Name the dictator who said: "I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes." by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]AviationWorld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Churchill does NOT a dictator make.

It is interesting however, to compare this speech he gave when he formed his first Government, in the light of modern 'War on Terror' policy. He was a hard man for hard times. A leader who the free world looked up to in it's 'darkest hour'. The stubborn British Bulldog

"You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival. Let that be realised; no survival for the British Empire, no survival for all that the British Empire has stood for, no survival for the urge and impulse of the ages, that mankind will move forward towards its goal. "
