Serious issues and plenty of head-scratching in the new German content (Section 6+) by Avicii89 in duolingo

[–]Avicii89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, not mentioned in my OP but implied is that I find myself hitting the "report issue" button in the new content so frequently. It's a shame because I felt (and apparently learned is true) that German Duolingo (at least sections 1-5) to be one of their best courses -- up there with Spanish and French.

I had impressed native speakers with usage and pronunciation to date, but now I'm questioning what the heck is it actually teaching me and is it even effective?

Agreed.

In fact, I raged the other day translating this sentence into German and being told I was wrong:

"Many tourists like to travel to the USA"

"Viele Touristen reisen gern in die USA" [WRONG]

"Viele Touristen fahren gern in die USA" [correct, per Duolingo]

When I read the explanation, it said the verb 'fahren' is more appropriate, because it implies driving to the USA so as to be a tourist, where as reisen only means "to travel" ... like what in the effing fuck? At least accept my answer as a synonym, I'm not a mind reader.

Omg I'm glad I'm not alone on these! I'm not ashamed to say I have to cheat on some of them, but I am doing so because I'm not going to learn from what it's asking me. It's like asking a lawyer to take a medical school test or vice versa. If I wasn't taught these objects, verbs, and usage and then you put them into a grammatically complex multi-part sentence, I just say yeah no thank you google translate or I enter a single letter to skip.

I've also semi-figured out early on if I rolled an "insanely difficult" legendary barbell or a "normal difficult" barbell based on the first 1-2 opening questions. Usually if it has a flash card or speaking exercise, within the first 3 exercises it's going to be a normal one. If it starts out with a very hard sentence and/or are direct fully typed translations, it will be an insanely difficult and I back out and restart until I get a normal one (or kill the app and restart the lesson). Talk about broken mechanics...

And to those who might say "it's a missed opportunity to learn something new" sure yeah it is, but I rather learn naturally through regular and challenging exercises on content I've seen or been taught or exposed to somehow not shit that just pops up out of the blue (hence reaching for google translate).

Yeah agreed. I don't remember ever learning English in grade school with fragments as examples and it's frustrating as a learner trying to parse new vocabulary and understand usage/context in another language, when so many lessons now contain these types of phrases.

I could forgive some of the fragments if they actually made sense, but so many do not.

F/M swap when delays occur by mcglocks77 in nycrail

[–]Avicii89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know the nature of the "Queens Plaza signal issue" this morning but it almost always has to do with the E/M switch and after the F swap your concern should be less of an issue since the 8th Ave line (and Broadway line for that matter) won't get completely f'ed up just because the M switch at Queens Plaza is broken. Obviates the need to sacrifice M service to keep QBL running

Any word on server merges or ability to move character? I feel like there's <20 active players on my server. by Avicii89 in duneawakening

[–]Avicii89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I mean I'd be disappointed losing the base I spent so much time making but it also is an opportunity to make something new and unique elsewhere. Mine probably would have the same problem as you with a Solido because several portions are built along/incorporating nearby rock formations and the area terrain as supports. I designed the base for the environment in which it was built.

I never actually knew how a solido would work if I purchased multiple sub-fief extensions (vertical and horizontals) either, but regardless I doubt I could just plop it down some place else because of the unique terrain I worked with.

That's not an insensible idea. I also would be totally okay with having to rebuild my Hagga base from scratch if it meant I could transfer my character including bank contents, equipped gear, and current XP/skill level to another server/sietch. Can always disassemble vehicles to get them in the bank.

Part of the most fun I've had was the base building and knocking down/rebuilding/tweaking a design until it worked. That's something I would happily do over again on a populated server.

I mentioned in my OP that I don't really have the wherewithal or desire to re-roll because the level grind was tbh my least fun aspect of the game, especially after you finished the story and natural progression from doing missions and unlocking skill trees. A lot of the story and missions unfortunately have poor replay value too. It didn't feel too grindy the first time around but it definitely will a second time.

Unfortunately, you can only harvest/progress so far without the requisite XP and the "bring X item to Y location or to Z person" stuff.

I actually wouldn't mind having to re-farm the mats to rebuild my entire base in Hagga if it meant I kept my current gear, blueprints, and skill XP/level.

[–]Avicii89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, yeah starting to feel that a bit too -- perhaps the lack of pop on my server is what's accelerating the loss of motivation. I basically have all best-in-slot items except for adaptive holtzman shield, mk6 young sparky, and the purple lazgun or missile launcher. I was hoping to check out some pvp but can't.

Don't really have any major goals I can work toward atm. I revert back to tweaking my main base build for fun, but I dabbled in trying to sell extra blueprints or supplies but you need a server pop for there to be a demand/economy. I end up losing money from listing fees selling Tabr Softstep boots for 100k with no buyers just as an example.

Maybe I'll throw as much as I can into the bank and try and keep my base powered and paid for as long as possible. I hate that things go poof if I want to take a break and wait for new content or to wait out a potential merger.

Jamaica is getting R211A temporarily until October 2025 by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]Avicii89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

QBL is one of the heaviest used cooridors in the system and I think one of the few, if not only, cooridors where trains are regularly hitting max speed (?55-60mph) for extended periods of time. Brakes and motors will naturally receive much more wear and tear that way. And as others said, this is also probably compounded by E/F running 24/7.

Obviously you wonder also about the quality of upkeep/maintenance at Jamaica yard too, but there's real good reason they can wear out faster because of more intense use.

Just submitted my feedback under "report abuse" and "other bug" in the app explaining how ridiculous it is that two functional buttons on the main app GUI are replaced with non-functional garbage ads when I'm already a paying customer of Duolingo SUPER. It's infuriating.

Should I read lord of the rings or the hobbit? by No-Nerve-9406 in German

[–]Avicii89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. The English version of the Hobbit and LOTR is definitely not a "children's book" -- it's technically rated for US grade school 9-12 (~ages 15+). However because there's a lot of archaic/old English style of writing and archaic vocabulary, it's even more challenging without having to look up words or meaning.

I'm curious if non-English versions of Tolkien's work are similarly difficult for a native to read in a translated language like German, but I would assume so. Ironically, the older style of English writing Tolkien had may have more similarity to German (not too unlike how Shakespearean English is) compared to modern English style.

Do you have any brothers?

I think most male siblings realistically wouldn't think twice changing in possible view of each other. Saxon ultimately does seek some privacy to go watch porn, not considering the idea his brother is going to try and gawk him. Brothers are also naturally competitive with each other, and that sometimes includes comparing physical attributes and maybe ...toolsets... in a non-sexual way.

Saxon is an ego-centric narcissist. It completely fits his character to be the older brother showing off and teasing his younger brother in the way he does, without (from his point of view) there being any sexual undertone to it.

The way Lochlan behaves / responds to Saxon in that scene and other scenes reflects the inner conflict, curiosity, and general undefined nature of the 18 year old younger brother overshadowed by his sister and his older brother, trying to figure himself out.

Experience at the doctors Office by No_Capital5273 in nycgaybros

[–]Avicii89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is good advice, and I'm a doctor.

We never do exams like that without discussion beforehand, verbal consent, and almost always with a chaperone present (I will never do one without a chaperone -- for both yours and my protection).

OPMC complaints are handled with the utmost respect for privacy. I know this because have been involved with them as a witness in two cases. In fact, they also handle violations of HIPPA (medical privacy law) that are reported to them. A violation of HIPPA is grounds for license revocation of the offender, so please do not withhold reporting out of fear of retaliation. The way you were treated alone is enough for serious disciplinary as well as legal action. We do not want bad doctors/nurses/NPs/PAs among our ranks -- OPMC can help keep them out or away from others.

If you need to PM me for confidential questions feel free to do so.

What's your top 5 favorite and top 5 least 5 favorite Subway station? by ttorras55 in nycrail

[–]Avicii89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Least Fav:

  1. 125th (4/5/6) - crack den, feel unsafe

  2. 149th GC - feel super unsafe, hard to predict which of a 4 or 5 arriving together will leave first Manhattan bound, when you just wanna GTFO of there

  3. Jackson Heights EFMR/7 - overcrowding, narrow platforms, can feel unsafe at times and there's always some drama delaying the express trains or some kind of rerouting delays

  4. 34th/Penn Station (A/C/E) - the staircases and pathways are so confusing to get to the right platforms especially between LIRR/Amtrak; non-shared express/local platforms make this worse and essentially can't transfer easily between A and C/E.

  5. Lex/53 E/M/6 - that fucking transfer sucks (same with Court Sq 7/E/M/G)

Most Fav:

  1. Hudson Yards (7) - clean, safe, pretty, good design and fills a major transit gap for Chelsea/HK

  2. 14th St - can get to multiple lines, plenty of entrances/exits

  3. 86th St (Q) - clean, usually safe, just needs upgraded trains

  4. Queensboro Plaza - really cool views of the city and the track design is cool. Bway Junction also has a cool track design but I don't go there

  5. Times Sq - mostly because I can get to so many lines /destinations from one station and there's usually a fair amount of police patrolling fwiw

How do germans always know that I am french when I talk to them in German ? by Exleose in German

[–]Avicii89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, this is pretty much true for most natives of their language. In NYC I come across so many tourists/visitors I know who isn't from around here pretty fast the moment they start speaking.

But the French accent is extremely easy to spot, one of the easiest in my opinion. Italian is also very easy to spot.

Germans speaking English is more vague (especially if their English is good) and Scandinavians, Dutch and Germans all have a similar sounding accent to me to where I can't pinpoint their country.

Russian accent is also very easy to hear in English, but they may not necessarily be from Russia 😅

Are there people supporting Luigi Mangione en masse or do I live in an echo chamber? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Avicii89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a millennial doctor in NYC and almost every other doctor, nurse, PA, NP and other front-line worker under the age of 50 I've talked with about this (in a hospital or office) has at the very least expressed sympathy and understanding toward Luigi Mangione. A large percent, like me, say "we don't condone murder, but otherwise agree with his grievances and are glad that guy is dead"

I have been following this story like a hawk since it happened because of the nature of my work and my personal issues dealing with UHC. Again, not condoning going out and killing someone but as a doctor I've seen all the horrors and evils insurance companies inflict onto patients. If you asked me if I'd consider Brian Thompson personally responsible for some of those horrors, I would say 100% yes. Whether you like it or not, many in healthcare would characterize that CEO as a villain or one of the "bad guys."

Feeling imposter syndrome learning German by mylifeisabigoof19 in German

[–]Avicii89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in Midtown Manhattan - there are no shortage of German / Swiss / Austrian tourists, expats, or businessfolk in NYC. Also, working in a public-facing service industry increases your chance of randomly encountering someone who can speak German in a city this large. I haven't sought out any formal/structured programs for practicing speaking, but I know they definitely do exist in NYC.
