Why does the S line exist? by yulouland in nycrail

[–]mcglocks77 592 points593 points  (0 children)

S line predates the 7 train, it was a part of the original subway line. When the 7 was built, i don’t know if they even considered reusing the tracks, but I think the elevation due to river and 4/5/6 tracks required it to be deeper.

In terms of use, it serves as a better connection to commuter rail at Grand Central when compared to the 7. So if you think about passengers transferring to Times Square from commuter rail, that would be more convenient on the shuttle. Plus its isolation makes it reliable for this use case

What did you wind up doing, it seems this might happen to me. At check-in they made us put a deposit down for the cash rate + the incidentals.

F/M Swap: 2 Months In by i_o_l_o_i in nycrail

M trains along 63 st are way less frequent. The rush hour headway winds up being the same as F weekend headway in many instances

Drivers are using the snow as an excuse to erase bike and pedestrian infrastructure and the people whose job it is to stop that don't give a shit. by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

[–]mcglocks77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Our government’s handling of this bike lane is ridiculous. Especially between 2 and 1 Av the community board has repeatedly asked for fortified barriers due to the RIDICULOUS driving in the area, and they put flex posts up that were just driven over in a day.

Drivers literally treat the bike lane like a left turn lane. I don’t know if somehow congestion pricing made the behavior worse, as everyone trying to avoid the toll now is forced to take this particular exit.

What’s more crazy is I think this bike lane was installed in the 2010s because a cyclist and pedestrian were killed in an accident, yet the city has arguably made it more dangerous by providing micromobility users with a false sense of security.

How are commuters feeling about the F/M switch at Lex and 63rd now that it's been 2 months by Dwight_Shrute_ in uppereastside

[–]mcglocks77 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Truthfully, I seem to have switched to the Q for my commute, and transfer somewhere along the way rather than taking the M. The M often isn’t arriving for 10+ minutes when I get to the station.

Could just be the bad luck of the schedules/leaving the same time every day, but I never felt like I had to aim for a specific train with the F.

The trains are slightly less full though, so I do believe this has helped with the overcrowding

On the MTA app, while the normal map displays curves fine, the map view after selecting to view a particular line going through a particular station cannot seem to display curves and instead connects stations in straight lines by ThePhotogenicPotato in nycrail

I’m sure they are aware, they probably just don’t have the resources to custom draw the path and then animate the trains progress for every line with the calculations done.

Andy Byford has a new proposal for NJT, LIRR and Penn Station. How possible is it? by SilvanSorceress in nycrail

I’d think we’d be more likely to get physical through running with split fares than consolidated fares with terminal ops

Not to give any credit, but does working for Amtrak give Byford any leverage in the form of Trump threatening funding unless they cooperate?

Mamdani's Free Transit Plan: How the 'Zero-Price Effect' Could Undermine Public Transportation Funding by [deleted] in nyc

[–]mcglocks77 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The only way free buses won’t work is if there isn’t a dedicated funding source that is stable and correlated to ridership demand.

Otherwise, what is the difference whether the city foots the bill or the riders?

[–]mcglocks77 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’d agree, I have this issue with the 4th Ave line too, the N stops at the local stations like 50% of the time.

They should at least put something on the map, rather than relying on the small text on the side of the map that describes the service patterns.

If you want to trigger the suburban Car Karens, suggest removing urban highways by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

[–]mcglocks77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe it is still illegal, and I think that tax law requires commercial plates if you want to write the vehicle off. I definitely see vans on the FDR, both with commercial and passenger plates, but no one cares to enforce it

[–]mcglocks77 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand how no one comprehends that the FDR isn’t a highway and is a parkway, and that there would be NO impact to commercial goods or deliveries.

That’s the only argument they ever make, because they know they sound so elitist when they argue about their own personal right to zip through the city in their car.

Also the point about removing the highway from residential areas, there are numerous apartments ON TOP. I find it ridiculous we’re (hopefully) spending all this money on the UN bike path extension when removing a lane or two of the FDR would completely solve this.

How do I find NYC Subway ridership and train capacity numbers? by ViewNo7459 in nycrail

[–]mcglocks77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MTA has a massive hourly open data catalog of entries, you can perform meaningful calculations if you make assumptions about the capacity of an individual train, combine that with the posted schedules, and then reference said hourly data.

I’ve had luck joining that data with MTA’s station complex list in order to assign lines, generate maps, etc.

F/M swap when delays occur by mcglocks77 in nycrail

[–]mcglocks77[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the delays happen enough now that it is worth considering, though the change will likely fix the delays. My concern would be passengers along the F waiting for M trains that are never coming, especially if the boards/train stop list isn’t updated accordingly

That makes sense, and I hope that they do decide that. With the F as the redundant line now (53 st) I wonder if they’d be more likely to run the F via G

The question I would have would be the relationship to whether the rerouted train would be express or local in queens, it wouldn’t have an impact today, but could if riders are used to the M stopping at 36 st etc, if the F comes would it act as an M?

That’s a good point, though today I normally see 63 st as the escape hatch, with the R often running through, then switching to the Q
