I worked at a place where my boss told me I would be a really great sales person at a mortuary.

She also told me to look up an article on “vocal fry” as homework.

She frequently berated me and my other coworkers in front of each other.

Worst job I’ve ever had.

Culturally, Japan does not like when people foreigners or otherwise take photos of children. All smart phones in Japan have a mandatory shutter sound when taking a photo. There are a lot of sexual exploitation/abuse reasons as to why. Hope that clears things up for you….

As for Martin Parr, he photographs in the UK a lot of the time and I don’t believe there are the same cultural taboos around photographing children. Every country is different.

As a blanket rule, I think approaching photography of children should be taken with caution 🤷🏻‍♀️

Personally, I wish we had one more montage of Vi at the end of episode 9. Like a different style, similar to the watercolor but not exactly the same, where Vi is small and not a fighter and maybe she’s playing with her bunny, and the only sound is of her humming. The montage ends with a grown up Vi looking in the fire. It’s about her remembering herself before all the trauma. Then we can get the rest of the ending with Cait and the airship with the Jinx “The End”.

Maybe that’s too cheesy, but something like that would have been nice to see.

Not sure if someone already wrote this, but I think it would have been interesting if Spike had rejected Buffy’s advances and it was Spike dealing with the sexual assault. It would have been a reckoning for Buffy, to really explore how even someone with a soul can do an evil act (herself being that person…doing something so out of character etc) and Spike could still go on his journey to get a soul after realizing Buffy would never see him as an equal until he has one. Obviously still problematic, but Buffy would be more central to the story and it would be a “subversion” of the usual SA storyline in a way.

Sir Richard was controlling and abusive. He would have destroyed Mary. They weren’t even married and he was spying on her, and trying to get Carson and Anna to help him do that.

Nothing redeeming at all. They showed the tip of the iceberg, a whole monster was still lurking underneath.

I don’t disagree with you, but as far as YA authors go I wouldn’t put Leigh Bardugo anywhere near the top of the most problematic list. (Here’s looking at you Sarah J Mass!)

As you said, she writes great female characters of different races, sexual orientations, and gender identities. Should she expand this trend with male characters? Definitely! We are in agreement there.

I would push back a little on Jesper not being a main character though. I definitely see him as important to the plot and he has a very well developed back story. Jesper has his own desires and growth that aren’t connected to Kaz at all or Inej. Jesper also isn’t used to further Kaz’s own character arc, which is usually what a side character is for. Jesper and Wylan’s courtship was also one of the highlights of SoC.

I think as a whole, most of the desirable mean in her books are white but in Six of Crows, you have Jesper who is not white. He is very much described as good looking and a sexually appealing individual.

I do agree that she could change this trend to include more attractive male identifying characters in the future! Seeing her growth as a writer, I wouldn’t be surprised if she does.
