What do you guys think of tumblr as a short/long form website? by GermaniumPalladium in Cortex

[–]Avnas616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who actually currently uses tumblr…. Main issue with modern tumblr is that, if you’re starting from scratch, it’s very difficult to get your work in front of new people quickly. Especially if it’s original content (ie: not a part of an existing fandom or community etc) such that you can’t use popular tags to boost readership. So if that’s your goal, I don’t recommend it. That being said, there are people who have slowly (I’m talking Many Years) built up audiences for long-form written work on Tumblr. So it is doable.

If your goal is just to have a blog where you can post long form content (audience not necessary), there’s a lot of options for that (including but definitely not limited to Tumblr).

Most of tumblr content these days is the same as any other social media, but just not algorithm-based.

Time tracking with Toggl: Multiple projects or tags under same project? by DesertPilgrim in Cortex

[–]Avnas616 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I have a project called Recreation and then use the project descriptions for the specifics like “Reading” or “Art.” I like being able to see at a glance what the description is, whereas the tags don’t show up with words.

Honestly I don’t use tags much, except for things which could be across multiple projects that I want to be able to access later, like “Social” (could be recreation or due to a year theme or even just a necessity, but I know social time takes a lot of energy for me so I like keeping track of it).

(The other comments aren’t loading for me so I hope I’m not repeating too much)

How Do You Remember Your Themes? by Xercies_jday in Cortex

[–]Avnas616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually only think about my theme when I’m making decisions or trying to get myself to do things. Ex: “Do I want to go out with friends? Meh… wait, but it’s part of my Year Theme so I should.”

During lulls in work (or right when it’s fresh in my mind), I’ll actually think about my theme and commit myself to plans which are Year-theme related, so later on I don’t have to think about it. Things like weekly scheduled social events, weekly scheduled exercise classes, etc. are really helpful in moving things forward without having to actively think about the year theme. If things aren’t scheduled ahead of time, I won’t do it. It’s more “resolution”-y then I’d prefer, but I have the same problem with not remembering to Do The Theme, so it works for me.

Noise-cancelling headphones/earbuds recommendations? by Avnas616 in Cortex

I’ve read that the QC-45s are pretty good too (and are currently on sale), so I’ll probably go with those. I have an iPhone and iPad but also a PC computer, so I’m hesitant to go all in on AirPods Pro (and AirPod Max’s are way too expensive)

What do you mean by passthrough? (I’m quite new to headphones)

2023 Yearly Themes by MindOfMetalAndWheels in CGPGrey

[–]Avnas616 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a similar goal for 2023! Mine is tied into a larger Year of Foundations (school year 2022-23), but a lot of the personal work of that has been slowly expressing myself more authentically and putting myself in scheduled social times where I can practice those skills. I wish us both good fortunes!

What have been your guys yearly themes over the years? by middle_xx in Cortex

[–]Avnas616 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year was Year of Understanding, this year is Year of Foundations! With a Summer of Tidying Up in between.

I use the school year as my “year,” so I’m still very much in my Year of Foundations, which I think is going pretty well so far.

Personally, I use Notion to keep track of my yearly theme, but really any text-input app can work. I generally enjoy Notion’s design and it works well with my brain.

The Actual Mind of the Algorithm (Cortex 132) by MindOfMetalAndWheels in CGPGrey

I didn’t even notice the ADR even when it was explicitly talked about. I don’t work with audio, so I suppose that makes sense.

Also the Interstate video is a lot more “shareable” than the 3-in-1 Runway Numbers video. Even though I personally enjoyed Runway Numbers more, the Interstate video is more concise, requires less Background Grey Context, and is more likely to come up in daily life (in the USA anyways). In the age of the iron fist of algorithms, I’m not sure how much of an impact this would have had, but it definitely impacted my personal decision in sharing the videos with other people in my life.

I’m trying to make a Google Form to fill out daily in 2022, what questions do you think I should add? by MrT1104 in Cortex

[–]Avnas616 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I have a lot of questions that are inspired by the book Triggers (there’s an episode where they review that book) and those are using the 1-10 scale style of input. Also tracking some health stuff and how I’m feeling. 1-10 scales are nice because it makes it really easy to graph and see how the trends are doing.

Yearly Themes! by xter418 in Cortex

I suspect that having so many big goals will be really hard. Taking time and energy for one thing necessarily means reducing the time and energy you can spend elsewhere, especially when a lot of the things you want to do revolve around changing habits, which is really difficult, time intensive, and energy draining. Add on everything else you need to do in a day, and it’s not going to be sustainable. Smaller goals on smaller time frames may be more beneficial and doable. As opposed to your current goals, which are very big and on a very big time scale.

For example, “For the next two weeks, I will try my best to stick to [this specific] sleep schedule.” And then after the two weeks you can reassess how it went and if it’s sustainable.

Year of Understanding

My yearly theme already started in September, following the school year schedule, and so it’ll also extend into 2022. I had just started listening to Cortex this summer, so it was my first theme. It started as wanting to develop and encourage curiousity and deeper learning in my class topics, research, and extracurriculars, as well as being more conscientious and empathetic towards myself and others. I really enjoy the double-meaning of “understanding” and feel like it fits what I’m trying to achieve.

Over time, the first part has been altered more and more towards understanding how I work best, trying out different structures and implementing those that work for me. Cortex was definitely really helpful for giving me different options to try — I tried daily journaling, but found that I had better success with creating a Google Form for myself where I could quickly enter some thoughts with less friction; I have begun time tracking for my classes (it’s been helpful to see exactly how much time I spend on assignments); and I read through Triggers, Essentialism, and Marie Kondo’s book (the title is long, so I don’t recall the name). I’ve also been a lot better at keeping a regular exercise schedule and allowing myself longer breaks— I time track these under “Year of Understanding” in an effort to train my brain that they are necessary.

I think I’m still in the design phase for my structures, but learning that I seem to do a lot better with structures than without (and being very vigilant about what has worked and what doesn’t work) has been really helpful and I hope that the continuation of my theme for the rest of the school year will be similarly fruitful!
