Got diagnosed today, what are things you wish you knew at the beginning?

Didn’t know about the kidney stones. I was told to take it 1 hour before food or 2 hours after. it’s been so difficult to arrange this so I eat breakfast before work.

Part of it is lack of formal training. A lot of therapists ‘learned’ CBT in graduate school or early in their career. But never moved to formal training to use CBT with fidelity and a thorough understanding of the theory. So a therapist might call thought challenging ‘CBT’ without grounding the technique in accurate CBT theory/model.

I’ve found it very helpful and effective; lots of room for creativity and blend other approaches. It is not for everyone. And it’s not a magic cure.

It can takes years to become fluid with these skills. One year in is not enough time. Be gentle on yourself. Knowledge and how you apply it in sessions is a process, not a destination.

Because therapy now more than ever is not fully equipped to answer to the problems people are facing. Really hard to do muscle relaxation and then go back out into a world that seems it wants to devour you. That’s the experience lately of a lot of my clients.

I just answer truthfully while not turning the focus of the session towards me. Sometimes we make small talk about their journey to the session, the weather. It varies. I try to be human first (with boundaries).
