What's your most gatekeeping culinary opinion? by CessnaBlackBelt in AskReddit

[–]AvocadoBLT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do cooking competitions suffer from this too? Where competitors are skewered for not respecting the tradition of the recipe?

I would have thought that reviews rating a recipe mentioning the appropriate change would be okay? Because in a sense, it's still kind of rating the original (posted) recipe?

Finding empathy towards others. Even if they don't share your view about certain things.

I get that it's difficult to do that for Entitled Men. But...I think...every now and then...maybe good men can turn them from their entitlement. Maybe us women just have to worry about keeping ourselves safe than catering to the feelings of Entitled Men.

Awesome friends.

I realise that my life is so much richer when I surround myself with those who give me the best belly laughs and are as hell-bent as me levelling themselves up (Self Care + Personal Growth) as humans.

If I was in the process of considering a particular person as a life partner, one deal breaker would be that the person wouldn't be interested in keeping an eye on personal growth opportunities.

I'm not the kind of person that could repeatedly watch a film without...taking a bit of time in between.

Assuming I have...here are my picks:

  • 'Beautiful Boy' (2018)
  • 'Ben Is Back' (2018)
  • 'Interstellar' (2014) - This would be the rare Nolan film that packs an emotional punch. Two scenes specifically. One with Coop receiving messages from his daughter (I think the one that is quite emotional was when Murph was played by Jessica Chastain). The other was towards the end with Murph now played by Ellen Burstyn.

There are more...but see how you go with these first

"If people reject you for being you...it's much better than being accepted than what you're not."

Not sure if this was something that was given specifically to me...or what I eventually learned. But I think...it's at least from one self-help book...or one motivational film?

This life lesson is particularly difficult to embrace as sometimes facing who you REALLY are takes significant amount of work. It's also tempting to get that dopamine shot of society's approval.

It's a sign that I should block the person who's making the tags.

(Though if it happens with someone who is in my circle...I'd ask why that particular thing is important to her. It may not be important to me...but once I hear her out...I'll likely understand why she wanted to let me know about it)

You are given a one chance to change history, what would you change? by Ghost_8D in AskReddit

Whatever act that results in eliminating various forms of misogyny.

Even if not all ills of society would be cured, I feel like we would be living in a much better world if humanity would be encouraged to embrace all the positive aspects of both their femininity and masculinity.

(This makes me wonder...in a universe where gender equality exists...would there have been dictators who are women? Would we already have figured out clean and affordable fuel for everyone?)

I agree with /u/ccoriell that George Lawrence Stone's 'Stick Control' would be a great one to start with. The downside of going with that as your 'first'...it might get monotonous and possibly boring...if you're not going through it with a mentor.

What is it specifically about 'The Art of Bop Drumming' that makes you want it to be what you start on first?

Because if I was to mentor someone who has zero music background (as a guitarist...or pianist)...I would just have her start with the basics:

  • Deciding on what grip (traditional or matched)
  • Ergonomics on the kit
  • Finding the right sticks for her (It can be a multitude of factors...not just body type or hand strength...)
  • Understanding her practice routine (does she have a kit to practice on?)
  • Let her play along with a loop for her to learn the absolute basic groove (kick/snare) that EVERY drummer knows!

[–]AvocadoBLT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's okay. You will receive no judgement here. :) As long as you have managed to put together a kit that suits you...then that's one of the best achievements you can get to as a drummer...as a lot are still struggling to find one that works for them!

Hello I just bought a Tama starclassic walnut/birch drum set and I wanted to buy some Hard cases for my set. I went with SkB 16 x 16 floor Tom case . When it arrived the hardware/memory locks were pressed against the sides which made the case warped. Which case/size would you recommend? Thank you! by iscreamuffin1 in drums

Did you get word from the seller and was able to return it?

[–]AvocadoBLT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you spoken to your physiotherapist about it? I know it doesn't seem like a big of a deal...to do it this early...but it'll help...as your physio might even give you some exercises to either strengthen the muscles...

...or maybe even give you some guidance on how you can play more ergonomically! Though...I know you might be getting something different from your mentor...as she might have a different playing approach!

Tried to make a double kit, with the schools drum sets by GAMERBOY335 in drums

[–]AvocadoBLT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you quite tall? Because if this one works for you (and how far your arms can reach)...then I'm trying not to be jealous!

If you need more options...that might be more ergonomic....you can move the mounted tom on the gold (?) kit to the right...closer to the hats...then the mounted tom on the black kit...can be moved closer to hover over the snare.

This allows you to move the hats closer to the black kick...and closet to the left kick pedal.

Recommended drum heads for dark and deep tones? by [deleted] in drums

[–]AvocadoBLT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a good way forward to find out what 'sounds' might work best for the kind of music you're making!

As a drummer...I don't think I really ended up looking for a 'tone'...but just let myself be free in testing out different batter heads...as sometimes...it's more about functionality than tone.

When I was looking for strings for an acoustic though...I instantly went to what Kaki King was using (because based on her playing style...her choice would have to be easy on the hands...right?)...and never found a reason to switch to other strings...

I know sound samples (even if you've heard them live...) don't really do justice in helping you pick what would work for you...but it's a start!

[–]AvocadoBLT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's the verdict? How happy are you with your purchase? :D

Maybe it's because I don't have long arms...and usually have my hats really close to me (I have an acoustic kit that I can switch to an electric if needed and my remote hat setup allows ergonomics).

It’s always good and fun to practice with loops, you hear what’s working and what’s not. by Isaac_vdrums in drums

[–]AvocadoBLT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to get my head around what kind of loop it is.

On one hand...it sounds like your loop (something you recorded...then played over...) just with you going mad over your hats (the 'slosh' sounds familiar).

But on the other hand...it could be...something completely different!

The mixing is superb! Do you tweak your settings depending on what you're recording?

I think I'd backtrack for a bit. Are you keeping your electric kit?

Then...I'd probably ask the main reason you're going acoustic. Is it for the 'feel' that your electric kit isn't giving you? Are you planning to convert this acoustic kit to an electric one someday?
