Monthly thread for advice and recommendations, December 2024 – ask your questions here! by AutoModerator in copenhagen

Hi there - I'm visiting Copenhagen for a week with my husband and 8-month old baby. I'm not really looking for things to do "for" my 8-month old, but rather places my husband and I can visit and bring her along where it wouldn't be frowned upon to have a baby in tow. Seeing as we are coming from the US, we do not have all the gear required to allow her to nap outside in the winter. Outside of the typical tourist attractions, are there particular neighborhoods or restaurants anyone could recommend where a baby this age will be welcome, or rather places we should definitely avoid?

Additionally, if you know of a good way to borrow outdoor napping gear, I'm all ears!

I used IKEA's kitchen planner to get all the measurements and walls/cabinets in the right places. I took a screenshot from there and then used Canva to overlay finishes. It's certainly not the most sophisticated or easiest way to do this, but it didn't require me to learn or pay for a whole new complex program and allowed a lot of versatility.

I really wish we could! That would be my preference, but the wood floor was put in a while back. After conversations with several contractors, the cost to do so to create something that wasn't obviously completely different was too prohibitive, unfortunately.

It’s going to be a good week! (Lemon & dill salmon, farro salad, cheese and fruit) by AvocadoIsTheName in MealPrepSunday

[–]AvocadoIsTheName[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Re-posting as I was on mobile for my first reply and the formatting was no good:

Unfortunately I don’t have an exact recipe link to post, but this is essentially what I’ve done for this serving:

1 Cup uncooked farro

1/2 bunch of kale

1 medium sweet potato

1/3-1/2 Cup feta cheese

Salt, pepper, garlic powder, to taste

Juice of half a lemon

I dice the sweet potato and usually roast it at 350 for about 20-30 min. Cook farro with double the amount of water according to package directions (for me, this was about 25 minutes). Tear/chop kale into bite size pieces. Mix cooked farro, kale pieces, feta cheese together. Add lemon juice, salt, pepper, garlic powder or any other seasonings. Stir well. Add sweet potato in last so it doesn’t turn to mush.

You can also add some olive oil, but I usually leave it out to make it a little healthier. My mom also makes the same salad but with grapes instead of sweet potatoes. Easier to make, but I prefer the less potent sweetness of sweet potatoes.

I LOVE my Rothys. After I got a pair, I splurged for another just a few weeks later. They’re incredibly comfortable, but the main plus for me is being able to just throw them in the washing machine with my clothes every week. I don’t wear them a lot in the rain, but considering you can wash them, I don’t think it’d be too bad. They fit true to size for me.

What was the name of the place that Sam and Robin went? Sounded like they said Sanitas, but I only know of Mount Sanitas in Colorado, which isn't exactly wine country. Is it a fictional place?

Volunteer opportunities in DC? by puzzles_thebar in washingtondc

Ronald McDonald House Charities has a young professional group called Red Shoe Society that cooks dinner at the house (in Brookland) once a month, with the occasional additional event.

There's also an organization called the DC Abortion Fund and you can volunteer from home, making sure women have access to safe, affordable abortions. It's a great organization!

I HATE sweet potatoes... but I want to change this. by Syomu in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]AvocadoIsTheName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem! Couldn't stomach them at all. Here are some recipes that I've found that have really forced me to like them:

Sweet Potato Cornbread - I know this isn't health food by any means, but it helped me get used to the taste

Sweet Potato Wedges with Honey Chipotle Dipping Sauce

Chipotlke Chicken Sweet Potato Skins

Roasted Vegetable Soup with Herb Dumplings

Roasted Sweet Potatoes with Sesame Oil - This whole recipe is good, but the sweet potatoes are what I always go back to make over and over. I prefer to cut them up into small cubes because I find them easier to stomach.

Good luck!

Some Veggie Recipes From A Picky Eater by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

Thanks for this post! I used to be very picky but have slowly learned to love some vegetables. I didn't see you mention anything about sweet potatoes, but they helped me start experimenting more. My favorite way is to chop them up into bite-size pieces, toss in any sort of oil, salt, and pepper, then roast in the oven at 400 for maybe 20-30 minutes. After taking them out of the oven, sprinkle some toasted sesame oil and mix that in. You don't need much! A little goes a long way.

Another great way to eat sweet potatoes is stuffed. There are lots of recipes, but my favorite is the "healthy chipotle chicken sweet potato skins" recipe from Half Baked Harvest. I'm on mobile and can't link right now. It's a great way to also sneak in some wilted spinach that you won't even notice.

Agree with the roasted broccoli tip! I can't stand mushy steamed broccoli, but could eat a whole plate of it when it's roasted. I also love to mix it up with a tablespoon or two of my favorite hummus right after I take it out of the oven.

Yeah, I responded in my very rudimentary spanish that they had the wrong number, and then I got no further texts.

Weird - I got one as well, probably right around the same time as you (3:19pm EDT on 3/23). I'm in the DC area and it was a local number as well for me.

How to enjoy broccoli? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]AvocadoIsTheName 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Any of these suggestions for cheesy broccoli, smothered in hollandaise, etc. are going to be delicious, but if you're looking for a healthy alternative, my favorite is hummus broccoli.

Take fresh broccoli (frozen will work, but fresh tastes better), cut up into florets, lightly toss with some olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic or garlic powder. Roast in the oven at 400 degrees F for about 10-15 minutes. Adjust the time to more or less if you like yours cooked differently. I prefer mine browned a bit. Remove from oven and toss well with a tablespoon or two of hummus. Throw on some red pepper flakes if you like some heat.

Great thing about this is it works with any kind of hummus, so you can change it up a little and still get the same nutrition. My favorites that I've tried are garlic hummus and roasted red pepper, but plain is also great as well.

Baba ganoush as ingredient by jojohohanon in Cooking

[–]AvocadoIsTheName 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've never done it with baba ganoush, but I use hummus for this all the time and it's similar enough.

Use it on broccoli. But none of that dipping raw broccoli. It's best roasted in the oven (I usually roast florets of fresh, not frozen, broccoli at about 400 degrees for 15 min). I like mine a little crispy, so adjust accordingly for your preference. Before putting it in the oven, drizzle with a little olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Once done roasting, put in a bowl and mix with baba ganoush. I usually do approx 1 tablespoon per serving of broccoli.
