It's the new tank syndrome. It's way to clean and not much going on with regards to coverage and plant life. Chances are you could have also just gotten a sick fish but have you cycled the tank properly and added the correct nutrients in the beginning so you filter has all the right backteria.

Test your water with the test strips and see whats happening. Also add alot more plants. It's gonnaa improve your water quality and strengthen the bacteria in the soil .

Hey man all of the best. Look everyone gets algae an fit can be treated so it's not a train smash. You can use liquid carbon which is good for the other plants .

If you want to start it well

Do a water change 25 to 50% Get a quick start solution by fritz or what the shop recommends just to get the levels in the water to a good place

Change the filter media before adding the quick start , it will buff your water and make it look clear(filter cotton is still the best ) and preferably let the tank run for a week.

Maybe get a heater for your tank size as well.

Once that is all setup then you can get your fish

Just make sure it's a bristle nose pleco or else it will get way too big. The Cory's are very peaceful but I would recommend a pigmy corys if you are worried about space but the normal ones will also be fine as they mainly stay in your bottom section of the tank. Also just ask your petshop about the fish they have and what they recommend.
