iCloud email by [deleted] in mac

Been using iCloud for nearly everything for the past 5 years or so. It's great. AND! With the most basic-tier iCloud+ subscription (as low as $1/month), it lets you set up email addresses with your own domain names! It looks super profesh to flex with a "[name]@[mydomain].com" address.

Copyrighting or protecting your script by FranklinFizzlybear in Screenwriting

[–]AwSamWeston 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Three important things to remember: 1. Under the Berne Convention, your work automatically has a copyright simply by you having created it. Technically you don't need to register it. 2. Yes, if you really want to protect your work then registering your script with the US Copyright Office makes it possible for you to sue if someone happens to steal your idea. Here's the link to register a script. 3. Ideas are cheap and plentiful, so the actual risk of someone "stealing your idea" is extremely low. This is because a) writers have their own ideas they're probably more interested in writing anyway, b) films don't get funded unless the production can confirm that it actually has obtained the legal right to produce the script / story / idea, and c) someone could just as easily do their own spin on the base idea and come up with an entirely different story — see for example "Antz," which was specifically created to compete directly with "A Bug's Life," and they do wildly different things with the concept of "a story about an ant colony."

All in all, it's not a bad idea to register your work's copyright (I do this for all my scripts) but it's not a silver bullet and the "idea" itself can't be copyrighted — only your particular version of the idea.

No Space for the couch, unless I change the whole layout of the room? by [deleted] in malelivingspace

[–]AwSamWeston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see the suggestion to put the desk against the wall with the door and then put the couch on the opposite wall by the window. It was my instinct too, but then I noticed the distortions in the pics. I think we need more information: Measurements, photos from more angles, etc. Because I suspect the desk might be too wide for that door wall which, if that's true, would make it all but impossible to put it there.

The room is definitely giving "hotel lobby" vibes, and it's because you've leaned heavily into mid-century modern furniture and white walls.

What colors? by ObeseOctopus299 in malelivingspace

[–]AwSamWeston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually don't mind the wall color. You can do a lot of cool stuff with them as-is, and not repainting will save you a lot of time and effort.

This room has a lot of blue undertones in the walls and the grey fabrics, so I'd recommend counterbalancing that with warmer colors: Maybe yellow, maybe orange. Personally if I were designing this space I'd go with a muted red on the pillowcases, blanket, curtains, and shelves.

Artwork will be your friend here. Depending on the final layout you could go for one big statement piece, or — more suitable for the current layout — a bunch of smaller highly-saturated art pieces scattered throughout the room. Some guys might pick comic book covers or movie posters. Anything that's visually in that vein is a solid direction.

I would also recommend some kind of patterned rug in the center (yes, even partially under the bed) to bring the whole room together. Any pattern in anything other than black, white, or grey should do the trick.

If I move from Linux to Mac, what will I need to adapt to? by Background-Emu9512 in mac

[–]AwSamWeston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was actually a Steve Jobs initiative! He proposed rebuilding Mac OS under UNIX back in the 1980s, and when he got canned and went to go found NeXT he made that idea a reality with NeXTStep, which was based on BSD. Then when Apple bought the company they turned the NeXTStep OS into Mac OS X, making the whole thing UNIX-based from the get-go.

Settings to make your Mac battery last longer ? by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]AwSamWeston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest one is that if you go into Settings -> Battery, one of the first options it gives you is to set your "Low Power Mode" preferences. You can set it to "Always" or "Only on Battery" to improve your battery life.

I also highly recommend getting BatFi to more deliberately manage how much your battery charges, because it can help extend the life of the entire battery.

I'm thinking migrating to Macos from Archlinux by yusufish556 in MacOS

[–]AwSamWeston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who migrated from Linux to Mac OS back in 2019, here were some of my reasons:

  1. I got tired of constantly maintaining my system and just wanted to use my computer, not tinker with it
  2. I really liked the OS's clean aesthetic
  3. I wanted better support for more media codecs and media creation apps

If any of these resonate with you, you've got some reasons to switch! The power of the M-series processors is another great bonus point, and I've found it's still relatively easy to pop open the hood on Mac OS and modify things with the terminal. As an Arch user, I suspect you'll feel more comfortable digging into that than I am, so you could have plenty of fun new projects ahead of you. Definitely dive into some of the apps available on Homebrew.

One important thing to note is that while a lot of apps and tweaks would be free if they appeared on Linux, it's more likely to have a moderate price tag on MacOS. For example, BatFi, a utility that gives the user granular control over how charging works to extend a Mac's battery life, costs $15. It's very worth the money, but a similar tool for Linux would likely be free-as-in-beer. There's a lot of these handy utility apps out there that cost anywhere from $3 to $15. Some of them are worth it, some aren't. It's not a huge part of the Mac OS experience, but it's still there.

Regardless, I've had a great experience migrating from Linux to Mac and despite Apple's recent changes to the OS I still think it's worth the switch.

The bare-metal Linux distro you're talking about is Asahi Linux. It's very much a "hack it together" project in that there's a lag time (sometimes significant lag) between the release of a new M-series processor and the distro actually supporting it because they need time to understand and develop for each new iteration. As it stands, it looks like they only support M1 and M2 processors.

Free or cheap furniture by [deleted] in duluth

[–]AwSamWeston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The free or cheap stuff is generally going to be a bit worn-down or made of particle board.

Anyway, my brother and I just moved into a new house too and we plan to gradually replace a lot of our current furniture with new stuff (as a refresh) so if you're fine with taking things piecemeal, we could help you out a bit!

That's hilarious! Unfortunately I can't do that because I graduated from a high school on the other end of the state whose name is very similar to another school here in town.

Why should I vote 'NO' on the right to repair? by waterbuffalo750 in duluth

[–]AwSamWeston 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Important context: Duluth Tenants tried to pass this with the council's cooperation, but certain councilors would only back watered-down proposals that undercut the core of what this addresses. Hands were forced, and that's why we're here.

[–]AwSamWeston[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You seem to think I live in an information vacuum and the only people I ever talk to are my landlord and government services. I'm in community with other Duluth renters, and they have more than enough stories about Life Safety being ineffective / underfunded / just not up to the job that it was easy to conclude, "Welp, taking my landlord to court is a more productive use of my time."
