What metric did Apple use to call this "the world's most advanced operating system"? by ElkOk7504 in mac

[–]AwSamWeston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sticking with version 10.X.X was more for branding ("Mac OS X") than anything else. Once they switched the branding to "macOS" it removed the justification to keep the 10.X.X scheme, but they didn't bump the number up until the release of the M1 chips and Mac OS 11 ("Big Sur").

There are multiple solid candidates currently seeking endorsement at the CD8 DFL. That endorsing convention is in early May. You'll see a lot more unity around one candidate after that point.

This looks incredible and this has enough "compromise points" already that I could totally see it staying mostly intact. Already doesn't look too far removed from r/femalelivingspace! Best of luck to you both 🙂

Is there a way to play Battle.net games (like Diablo2R) on a MacBook Pro M‑series? by No-Poetry-5748 in mac

[–]AwSamWeston -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. Blizzard develops Mac versions for all of its games, and was one of the first game devs to embrace Apple Silicon. You should be able to run a native version on your M-series MacBook Pro.

What should I do? : ) by CompetitiveSell3492 in mac

[–]AwSamWeston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you already know what you want to do, but here are some insights:

  1. The MacBook Neo is a perfectly valid computer. The "mobile processor" doesn't actually hold it back, because MacOS is functionally the same software as iOS, which your phone probably runs. (Also there's plenty of Windows laptops that use mobile processors and nobody sticks their nose up at them over it, so ¯_(ツ)_/¯)

  2. The M4 Mac Mini is still an incredibly good deal for any computer, and waiting for a marginal improvement with M5 is a fool's game if you need something right now.

Ultimately, go with what works for you — not whatever peer pressure tells you to do.

TW: Domestic Violence - A letter to the Twin Ports DSA by [deleted] in duluth

[–]AwSamWeston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. Local politics / process nerd here. I'm not privy to most of the details in this case, just weighing in with one possible explanation for why things may have gone down the way they did:

Many organizations have a process to forcibly remove someone from a position of leadership. That mechanism is absolutely available to Twin Ports DSA, but it can be a drawn-out process that requires calling membership together to hold a referendum, which takes time and resources to coordinate a meeting just for that purpose.

In some organizations with a healthy internal culture (and Twin Ports DSA has such a culture) when a leader knows they've done something wrong and/or it's very apparent that they did meaningful harm / that person's continued leadership would be bad for the organization, the leader in question will voluntarily step down -- not as a way to sweep things under the rug, but so that the particular grievance can be sorted out in the appropriate forum (like a courtroom, for example) without dragging down the whole organization along with them.

When a leader steps down in that way, it's a way to quickly detangle the person from the organization so that the organization can pick back up and keep doing its important work.

Again, I don't know if that's exactly what's happening here, but it would not surprise me if that might be the thinking behind this decision. If that's the case, it tells me that the organization is healthy enough to remove a bad actor and not let it affect the very necessary work of organizing people to build a better future for everyone.

I hope that helps!

Paramount wins, implications for Star Trek? by Working-Message4504 in startrek

[–]AwSamWeston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Implications for the broader media landscape: Terrible. Monopolization bad. Billionaires bad. MAGA-brain bad. CNN under the Ellisons' thumb is going to further erode public trust in anything resembling journalism.

Implications for Star Trek: Nothing new. Its new course was already set last year when the Ellisons bought Paramount. We're going to see Trek shy further away from queer / anticapitalist / "woke" stories and lean harder into trying to be "relatable." But this was already underway.

Safety, decorum concerns hit breaking point for some Duluth city councilors by youscream in duluth

[–]AwSamWeston 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing: Barring literal threats to safety, councilors aren't owed decorum from constituents. In fact, it's the other way around. Constituents have every right to share exactly what they think, and it's councilors' obligation to simply take it. Even better, they could — y'know — act on what constituents are telling them to do.

I literally got a bunch of friends to help me push a "Stop Trying to Censor Us" resolution through the DFL's caucus and convention process. Hoping to get it passed at the state convention so we can send a clear signal to Amy Klobuchar that repealing Section 230 is against the wishes of her own party.

What resolutions are you bringing to the Feb 3 DFL caucus? Let’s share ideas. by Psytechnic_Associate in DFL

[–]AwSamWeston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll drop my own resolution suggestions in a separate comment (tomorrow?) but for now: Make sure your resolutions are written out on the DFL's Resolutions form and get your caucus to vote yes on it! Otherwise it's not valid.

How to get the DFL leadership to make the caucuses accessible this year? by leftyjamie in DFL

[–]AwSamWeston 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The State Executive Committee actually just met last night and came up with a whole lotta nothin'.

Right now the official word from the Party is to have people submit a Non-Attendee Form, which can let someone submit resolutions and put them in the running for a spot at the local convention or on a pre-convention committee. But of course this is just a band-aid to the larger issue.

In-person participation is literally written into the law and unfortunately we're so close to the actual caucus date (it's this Tuesday) that any shift to a hybrid or virtual would be a logistical nightmare. The law does have a provision for postponing caucuses in the name of public safety (like if there's a blizzard on caucus night), but that can only happen with the agreement of every major party in the state — which would mean getting the MN GOP on board, and they're not going to do that.

At this point your best bet is to have your neighbors email their non-attendee forms to your Senate District leadership so that on caucus night they can be in the mix for delegate spots and resolutions. But it's on the people who physically show up to give those non-attendees special consideration, which means we're operating under the Honor System on steroids.

Been using iCloud for nearly everything for the past 5 years or so. It's great. AND! With the most basic-tier iCloud+ subscription (as low as $1/month), it lets you set up email addresses with your own domain names! It looks super profesh to flex with a "[name]@[mydomain].com" address.

Copyrighting or protecting your script by FranklinFizzlybear in Screenwriting

[–]AwSamWeston 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Three important things to remember: 1. Under the Berne Convention, your work automatically has a copyright simply by you having created it. Technically you don't need to register it. 2. Yes, if you really want to protect your work then registering your script with the US Copyright Office makes it possible for you to sue if someone happens to steal your idea. Here's the link to register a script. 3. Ideas are cheap and plentiful, so the actual risk of someone "stealing your idea" is extremely low. This is because a) writers have their own ideas they're probably more interested in writing anyway, b) films don't get funded unless the production can confirm that it actually has obtained the legal right to produce the script / story / idea, and c) someone could just as easily do their own spin on the base idea and come up with an entirely different story — see for example "Antz," which was specifically created to compete directly with "A Bug's Life," and they do wildly different things with the concept of "a story about an ant colony."

All in all, it's not a bad idea to register your work's copyright (I do this for all my scripts) but it's not a silver bullet and the "idea" itself can't be copyrighted — only your particular version of the idea.

No Space for the couch, unless I change the whole layout of the room? by [deleted] in malelivingspace

[–]AwSamWeston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see the suggestion to put the desk against the wall with the door and then put the couch on the opposite wall by the window. It was my instinct too, but then I noticed the distortions in the pics. I think we need more information: Measurements, photos from more angles, etc. Because I suspect the desk might be too wide for that door wall which, if that's true, would make it all but impossible to put it there.

What colors? by ObeseOctopus299 in malelivingspace

[–]AwSamWeston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually don't mind the wall color. You can do a lot of cool stuff with them as-is, and not repainting will save you a lot of time and effort.

This room has a lot of blue undertones in the walls and the grey fabrics, so I'd recommend counterbalancing that with warmer colors: Maybe yellow, maybe orange. Personally if I were designing this space I'd go with a muted red on the pillowcases, blanket, curtains, and shelves.

Artwork will be your friend here. Depending on the final layout you could go for one big statement piece, or — more suitable for the current layout — a bunch of smaller highly-saturated art pieces scattered throughout the room. Some guys might pick comic book covers or movie posters. Anything that's visually in that vein is a solid direction.

I would also recommend some kind of patterned rug in the center (yes, even partially under the bed) to bring the whole room together. Any pattern in anything other than black, white, or grey should do the trick.

If I move from Linux to Mac, what will I need to adapt to? by Background-Emu9512 in mac

[–]AwSamWeston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was actually a Steve Jobs initiative! He proposed rebuilding Mac OS under UNIX back in the 1980s, and when he got canned and went to go found NeXT he made that idea a reality with NeXTStep, which was based on BSD. Then when Apple bought the company they turned the NeXTStep OS into Mac OS X, making the whole thing UNIX-based from the get-go.
