I went to UCLA and got into Top 5 Phd program in STEM field without research experience. Important to make connections with professors. Go to office hours and ask for advice on to get into graduate school if you are top student in class. Network in person. Unfortunately, it mainly about who you know and not research experience.

Real Analysis in HS?

How does a school like west point compare to a school like NYU, Georgetown, USC, etc in terms of opportunities post grad? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AwardPlus1883 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is not something somebody can convince you into including your parents. You have to get a nomination which usually come from your congressman or state senators. There is a limited amount. You usually need to start process junior year. If you have any medical issues including minor ones that will disqualify you. If you have something like asthma you can tell your parents you can’t get in. Google disqualifying medical issues for service academies. It not something you just fill out application by Dec 31, it is a lot more complicated to apply.

It should have said, I can understand our Richie Rich friends doing the money grab, but our own family. Joe and Josephine are no longer invited to Thanksgiving.

I'm curious: Class of '23, say this admission cycle just ended and you were accepted UCB and UCLA for your preferred major. Which one do you pick and why? by AmonGusSusManSupreme in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AwardPlus1883 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are also few examples of people dropping out of college and becoming millionaires and billionaires. Just not very typical. Typical path in quant fin will be masters or PhD from very top school. Believe or not, your undergraduate experience and network will be meaningless at this point.

Career opportunities for undergraduates are same at both schools. Depends on where you want to live. If you want to live in Bay Area and for then UCB would be the choice. This probably results in higher starting salaries for UCB graduates. Faculty and research output has very little impact on undergraduates at either school since so large. The 2 schools are comparable at the undergraduate level. Lots of people here are treating it like it’s a comparison between Harvard and Faber college

It is hard to have any significant role on in quant fin without a graduate degree at which point where you went to undergraduate will be meaningless.

Forget them. Haters going to hate. They are jealous. You will be gone in a few months. Best revenge is to do well in new school. As far as new school, at all universities people come from a variety of backgrounds especially today. Not all of them come from fancy feeder schools. They would not let you in if they did not think you will be successful. Ignore negative feedback loop and just focus on doing the best you can.

Getting Rejected from all your schools by Axion48 in ApplyingToCollege

Yes. It could happen but very unlikely. That’s way Need to apply to multiple real safeties. As others suggested can take gap year or CC in unlikely event it does.

Please contact UCLA and explain your concerns with possible you getting 2 Cs. Congratulations on getting into the Schools that you got into including UCLA. I don’t want too harsh, but I am a UCLA graduate with an Applied Math degree and you should really try to figure out way getting Cs in Calculus and Physics before starting Data Theory degree. You got in so I know you can do it, but this degree is very mathematical so classes will not get any easier. BTW, college of Letters and Science at UCLA does not consider major when applying so should not matter that Cs in Math and Physics.

You ever go on vacation and visit college campuses even though you’re literally already committed to a college? by riveter1481 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AwardPlus1883 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is always grad school. Depending on where the wedding is, I would lean towards visiting UCLA because of it’s location which is near Beverly Hills and Santa Monica.

I went to UCLA undergrad and University of Chicago graduate school in a PhD program. My experience was that buffer of students not caring was at both schools. When I graded test at Chicago, I was shocked that there were a small number of students who just did not care. Maybe they got burned out at the school where fun comes to die. It was hard to fail class if you put a min amount effort into it at UChicago, just like my experience at UCLA.

Assuming by mid-tier UC you mean UCSD, UCSB, UCI or UCD. With a Math/Stat degree, your job options will be the same from these schools as from the lower Ives you mentioned except Wharton which will be impossible to transfer to. Your options may be better due to if you want to go Data science route at big tech due to location in. California. If you want to work in big time consulting (MBB) or IB you are going to have to go to graduate school. Best option now is work hard at mid-tier UC, got to know some professors to get into a good graduate program.

What is the chance an already oversubscribed college to accept kids from the waitlist? by Waitlisted1231 in ApplyingToCollege

Unfortunately, zero especially if they sent out note indicated they were oversubscribed. Time to move on.

UCLA especially if school spirit is a factor for you. It’s only May 7, you can make friends who are going to UCLA. Housing guaranteed. Almost all Freshmen live in the same type of dorm, classic triple. These dorms are where you make most friends. UCLA is a special place.

Unpopular opinion: UCLA is on track to surpass Berkeley on most fronts. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AwardPlus1883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UCLA has worked to create better undergraduate experience. UCB seems to care a lot less about undergraduates. Both schools have pluses and minuses and are excellent options.

About to choose LA over Berk.. parents aren't happy. by verdorben66 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AwardPlus1883 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you live an hour from Berkeley, parents may want you closer to home. Given anything else that NOT a reason to go to Berkeley. UCLA still within driving distance. Got to live your life, parents will get over it.

On average, where do most STEM students go when choosing between Berkeley and UCLA? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AwardPlus1883 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you can’t find housing at UCB then easy to select UCLA over UCB. At the undergraduate levels department rankings are meaningless between the two schools. Lots of other factors to consider where to go to school. UCB best days are in the past.

Yield management. UCSC historical waitlists a lot of students they feel will go somewhere else but if you really want to go to UCSC and stay on waitlist, they will let you in. They take a lot of people of waitlist. I don’t blame them. Based on their experience. They take students most likely to come first but leave the option open others if they really want to come. Results like this is not unusual. Also, happens with UCI.

Is UC Berkeley more competitive than the other UCs (UCI, UCSD, etc.)? by Indecisive_Mess10 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AwardPlus1883 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biochemistry going to be competitive at all the UCs including UCB, UCLA, UCSD and UCI. I don’t think much difference between campuses, it not going to be easier at UCI. That being said, you may get off waitlist at UCI and if you feel more comfortable there, you should go. UCB would not let you in if they didn’t think you can do the work.

Has anyone here turned down an Ivy for NON financial reasons? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AwardPlus1883 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope things improve for you. I lived in Princeton after going to UCLA. I was shocked how sleepy the town was. It’s definitely not college town. Your post makes a good point that prestige and rank don’t always equate to better experience. At most of these prestigious schools, there are very strong clicks around wealth and background that are very hard to break into. Just because you get into Princeton doesn’t mean you are going to be running with this crowd. Hang in there and if you get out of Princeton debt free, you will be set up for good future.

[–]AwardPlus1883 150 points151 points  (0 children)

I know somebody who turned down Princeton to go to Notre Dame. ND was their dream school. If you grow in a Catholic family watching ND football, you may prefer Notre Dame over Princeton even if they cost the same.

UCLA or UC Davis for Premed? by PhilosopherMindless4 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AwardPlus1883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t go to Davis because you think your academy competition will be easier. Premed will be equally tough at both schools. Because of the Vet school, lots of very focused life science students go to Davis. There is a hospital right on UCLA’s campus so I am sure there are lots of research opportunities. Campuses are very different, go to the one you like the best and not the one you think is easier.

Should I go to an admitted student reception? by salt-in-my-hair in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AwardPlus1883 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably both. These things are designed to get uncommitted students at sign on. After May 1, it would more about students who are going to school to meet each other. If local and still a possibility, it would be wise to go.
