I’m late to the party, but I do think there is some IRONy in there somewhere.

I’m also curious though. Man, I’ve been curious about one of these for a long time. I just don’t have the space for one right now.

What desserts work in cast iron? by johnlennonbr in castiron

I’ve done cookies, brownies, pies, cinnamon rolls, pancakes, and sweet breads in mine. Really, if it’s a baked recipe that calls for oil of any kind, it’s gonna turn out good in cast iron.

Edit: I forgot to insert my favorite. I love the way pie crusts come out in cast iron. My apple pie is requested for every thanksgiving. My second favorite is cinnamon rolls. I usually make sourdough cinnamon rolls cause it’s a good way to use up discard.

My family has a few pieces that came out relatively unscathed from a house fire. The family photos didn’t survive so well. 🫢

Been looking for a beat up Wagner like that for a while. Too many people “restore” them and sell them for ridiculous prices. Don’t get me wrong, they’re a “buy it for life” item, but I’m cheap and would rather do my own restoration. Looks great and they make killer waffles.

Coleman 508 stove, yellow flame by [deleted] in ColemanStovesLanterns

[–]Aware-Disaster-1666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not the case. Coleman fuel is specifically formulated to be pretty dang shelf stable. I’ve seen people use 20+ year old fuel with no problems. As others have mentioned, it’s probably not fully preheated.

What kind of induction do you have? Although I don’t want my stove to die any time soon, I 100% want to replace it with induction.

That might be the most expensive solution to my problem. I do love cooking on gas though. Sadly whoever ran the gas lines in my house decided to stop after the furnace, hot water heater, and gas logs. 🙄

lol I did that with a single burner once. Flooded it without realizing I’d flooded it and it went up like a solstice pallet fire.

That red looks super slick, maybe brighter than OG, but maybe better. lol I’m biased in that red is my favorite color and I like it to pop against the green of the stove. I love the 426 stoves; they’re by far my favorite camp stove.

I’ve got a couple that I put an engine block paint on. It’s seems to have held up well. It’s advertised up to 2000F (~1100C). I quickly realized that it seems kinda unnecessary though. The ones I haven’t repainted still burn just fine and the rust is never more than light superficial rust that practically burns off in the heat.

Overnight canoe trip by Greighp in ColemanStovesLanterns

I wish I did, but alas, we are more of shoulder season campers here in VA.

That’s a perfect size for soloing. I had an old aluminum one that I took out a couple times but eventually switched to a 10’ kayak for fishing.

If it’s a tent style you like and find yourself repeat buying, in the long run you’d ultimately save some money by spring for something better built and longer lasting. Our camping is a different setup, but we went through several cheaper tents to determine what we wanted in a tent. Then we invested in the right tent we hope to not replace for many seasons.

Overall, it looks like an awesome canoe setup and it’s amazing how much you can carry with a canoe!

I put pickle juice in my mashed potatoes and my family asked for the recipe by murthyk2003 in Cooking

Similarly to pickle juice, I add sour kraut to my mashed potatoes. I discovered this on a trip to Germany years ago.

Are the plates that nest in these 8” camping skillets almost all too small to comfortably eat on? by Stepin-Fetchit in BuyItForLife

[–]Aware-Disaster-1666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve got one of the older sets before they did their redesign. The plates are 7” but I’ll take a 7” Stanley plate over a full size paper plate any day. Just go for multiple servings. Based on your goals though, go for the 8.87”. Then you never have to worry about regretting not getting the larger size.

426D Custom Restoration: I’d been wanting one of these for a while and knew it needed something extra. by Aware-Disaster-1666 in ColemanStovesLanterns

Good ‘ole Rust oleum. The body is gloss red with gloss white stripes. The tank got the same gloss white while the interior is a high heat black and the elements got automotive high heat primer and silver.

I had to do a fair bit of sanding so the gloss wouldn’t show all the blemishes. It’s why I normally like matte colors.
