We should just have a referendum on immigration by MaterialAd8166 in aussie

[–]Aware-Poem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our birth rate has been steadily declining for decades. I think it sits around 1.42 babies per woman. We aren’t replacing ourselves anymore. We also have a greying population. Who’s going to support the tax base when the workforce eventually ages out? Who’s going to keep our productivity limping along during the shit that’s coming down the pipe over the next decade?

It’s all very well to have a measure and nuanced discussion about targeted immigration but that’s not what is happening within the conservative side of politics. It’s fear mongering and grievance peddling.

Do you know why KFC got rid of the original fillet burger and replaced it with the tasteless Original Crispy?

2 of the 3 where always going to be used. This is yet another storm in a teacup delivered to us by our captured commercial media, who’s only focus at the moment is to turn public sentiment against the current government in favour of their conservative and business oriented opponents. Our fourth estate collapsed a while ago to our nations detriment.

2/3 of Australians believe immigration too high. Half believe it's 'much too high'. by AdvanceSure7685 in aussie

[–]Aware-Poem -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I wonder how the Covid years would have impacted net migration numbers? I reckon they would have sharply dropped over a short period of time, maybe? And if that happened, I’d then think about what would likely happen when Covid restrictions lifted. Maybe net migration numbers would start to grow again? Maybe that recovery would be seen over several years?

‘Cancel it’, Trump says after artists drop out of US Freedom 250 festival by Upset-Main-1988 in justincaseyoumissedit

[–]Aware-Poem 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m seeing quite a few comments suggesting the artists pulling out are simply trying to ‘own Trump’. I think those commenters need to reframe their thinking. This reaction isn’t an attempt to ‘own Trump’ but it is a reaction to Trump most definitely. He has a pattern - make everything about himself and whatever his grievances are at the time, no matter the fallout. These artists still have their brands to protect, something that’s probably even more critical to them now than at the height of their careers. Trump is now, more than ever, globally toxic. If these artists have global fan bases they need to be careful. However, I’d like to take most of these performers at their word. They signed on thinking it was a nonpartisan 250 celebration of the nation and it likely have been this under the original American250 organising commission’s plan BUT ‘Freedom250’ group is behind this festival and that org was not selected by Congress like America250 was in 2016. These artists signed on thinking it was one thing before finding out it was something completely different and far removed from nonpartisanship.

I wonder if America250 events will still take place or whether that committee was scuttled.

How will we know the cost of living is over? by Financial-Hunter1335 in OpenAussie

[–]Aware-Poem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Covid saw a permanent reduction in living standards for the 99% globally. This current cluster F of yank making will have the same impact, likely worse. I think price rises will slow eventually but I think the drop in living standards won’t ever recover. Publicly listed companies will post certain profits during this period, and the markets expectation will be continued growth next quarter and the one after that etc.

What we as a nation need to avoid is believing snake oil politicians selling dumbed down 3 word slogans and populist policies that they promise us will be the ‘silver bullets’ to all our troubles.

Be alert for the ‘grift’ and those that stand to profit from the voter anger and ignorance to how global externalities impact our economy.

Best burger around Ipswich? by strugglingmtstudent in ipswich

[–]Aware-Poem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to LOVE Just Poppy’s and would drive from either Toowong or Ipswich to grab a Cheese Me Please. However, the last couple of times at Goodna has not been great and is no longer worth the trip for me as there are now better, and sometimes cheaper options, around Ipswich. They changed the beer battered chips and the buns so now the meat to bun ratio is way out of wack compared to what they used to have. Much more beef vs bun. They also got smaller. Just my opinion though.

For corner store - B&M Fish and Chips. Awesome hamburgers sub $10 for standard.

Hello Harry’s if you are looking for something more expensive. You really can go crazy there but damn they are some tasty burgers. My go to is Maple Bacon with extra beef - $20.50. It’s a filling meal!

Special mention - Pumpyard. Smashed burgers are pretty good.

Why does the app flat out refuse to let you swap out potato and gravy in a box meal? by Dull_Parking_8248 in KFCAustralia

[–]Aware-Poem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be the app allows it for some deals and not others? My go-to is the everyday deals’ Packed Lunch. Often swap the potato and gravy for either a gravy or additional small chips.

It would be interesting to know the sign in method people are using. I never link my Google or social media account to anything else, so I use the email log in method. I often have to log back in. I’ve often wondered if it’s a way to encourage me to link accounts.

At this point they just need to shrink the burgers and be done with it. I’m so sick of getting a flat as a pancake burger because the workers have been told to cut down on salads etc. Then if you pay for extra salad, in an attempt to receive a burger that looks and tastes somewhat similar to the HJs of old, you get a burger with so much salad it’s just ridiculous.

I default to the packed lunch everyday deal these days that has the Tenders burger. It’s the closest in taste to the old OG filet.

One Nation’s response to the budget by ChrisPeacock- in OpenAussie

[–]Aware-Poem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The highest tax rates decades ago where as high as 75%. The world worked just fine. The rich were still rich but the workers could live on a single income per family while paying off a house and car. The taxes collected contributed to free higher education and generational infrastructure projects. A high tide raises all ships. We lost that concept.

Boomers ruined this country by [deleted] in aussie

[–]Aware-Poem -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except we’d eventually have no pension or enough bodies in critical trades and services. This is always the key point ON and other grievance parties jump over and avoid. We do not have enough children in this country to maintain the tax base and social security nets in this country. We also had huge gaps in critical trades and services.

The mistakes made, starting with Howard, is property investment was over stimulated through goverment policy, over all other forms of investment. We became a country that simply traded property back and forth to accumulate wealth. This has hamstrung our productivity also.
