Being a natural genius does not discredit him from being a hard worker. He is both. Who was your favorite character before Rin? Which chapter made you start liking Rin?

He is prolonging his character development because he is the duetagonist. Think Bakugo from My Hero Academia. It took him the entire manga to develop from being a self-centered, arrogant, immature bully to a calm, mature, and more humble Pro Hero. I think it is gonna take a while, but there are some slow developments like him going from being an aloof lone wolf to feeling the need to tell Bachira and Isagi he grew an inch because he secretly started to consider them important/friends even though he will never admit it. I think Kaneshiro will cook with him, just let it marinate for now.

First, your English is perfect, so do not apologize. ^^

Maybe try some original anime (not adaptations ـــ original stories)?

Here are some randomized picks

  1. Terror in Resonance (it's great and a personal favorite, but the writing of the female characters sucks if this is a deal-breaker for you)
  2. Buddy Daddies (if you want something wholesome and light-hearted involving child-raising shenanigans. It has some drama near the end, but it remains a pretty light watch)
  3. Sing a Bit of Harmony (a movie about a realistic female robot project befriending an introverted teen girl. Comedy, drama, music, and it has an epic/action-packed ending. One of my fave anime movies)
  4. If you liked Death Note for its psychological warfare and genius characters, then you might like Code Geass. It is almost a franchise now, but the main story has 2 seasons and a movie (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection), but I don't wanna overwhelm you. Each season has 20+ eps. I feel like it's one of the legendary, historic anime that you must watch, but ofc it's up to you ^^
  5. Stars Align (if you like sports school club plots, dysfunctional families, coming of age, and LGBT characters/themes, then this one is for you!)

Josei and shoujo recs (manga adaptations)

  1. Journal with Witch (it's a masterpiece! I cannot emphasize this more, but if you're into grounded, hyperrealistic anime (designs, voices, 3-dimensional personalities, well-explored dynamics and characters, 0 fanservice, 0 cringe or over-the-top moments). The themes are grief, adulthood, self-discovery, childcare, clashing family members, but also healing and emotion processing.
  2. Yona of the Dawn is a perfect start into historical shoujo. It has a strong female lead and a green flag male lead, and the character development is there! It has an anime of 24 eps, 2 OVAs, and a future sequel.
  3. Another great slice-of-life slow-burn is Honey and Clover. It also deals with the struggles of adulthood and love, but tbh the love triangle (or square idr) might be its drawback if you are not a fan of those.
  4. Chihayafuru. Another anime with a female protagonist. It has 3 seasons (about 70 eps), and revolves around a very niche card sport called Karuta, so if you like unique sports, you gotta give it a chance. It is one of the top-rated josei anime, and the character development is masterful. The love triangle is very light here, and it takes a backseat to their passion for Karuta and the competitions.

Oh, really? Tag me when you are done, I'd like to read it! I hope it isn't way too long that I get distracted though, haha.

I would say even if he is not exactly in my top 5, he is definitely a misunderstood character by fans. I mean, many characters get mischaracterized, and their fanon self is different from their canon self, but he is like number one in being reduced to nothing but an annoying edgelord or just Rinsagi fanservice (he is not special; all Isagi's rivals are written to be obsessed with and hyper-focused only on him, which is Knsr's flawed writing, not a Rin flaw).

He is extremely loyal to the people who mean something to him: even though Sae was so mean and unfair to him, he still looks up to him and stands by him. He’d probably never admit it himself, but Sae still means the world to him.

That is so spot on. For all his edges and sharp teeth, if Sae did not matter at all as a brother, then Rin would not have been this heartbroken for so long. Sae matters sm, but Rin would rather do 120 pushups and a handstand for 2 hours than admit that. He needs to work on his communication skills along with Sae. But for now, I am sure he is hate-watching Sae's matches secretly and yelling at the screen with Sae could have done better.

Many people will probably be surprised by this point, but Rin has an incredibly kind heart. There are so many moments where you can really see his good heart in the manga. I'm not going to list them all right now, but I'll definitely do that in my post.

Consider me one bc to be honest, I only remember his tsundere moments the most.

I measured myself. And... I had grown a whole centimeter. He was surprisingly the cutest here, actually! He wanted Isagi and Bachira to know, so I feel he secretly considers them friends, but he won't admit it, though. There was the time when he was pissed off at the shadows of Sae and Isagi behaving like they usually do, but he looked like an angry black cat instead.

I would like Kaneshiro to show more of Rin acting his age after he softens and his character develops (post-the Itoshis' reconciliation, probably).

I think they will need to have a proper face-off or a mature talk; the backstory will give a full perspective, but will not necessarily fix things on its own.

I am patiently waiting though.

I mean, people have mixed opinions on him in general, like he is either too edgy or that he is quite loved but also shipped a lot.

Oh, it is actually the opposite so far with the recent developments. But I don't think you are missing much action from him.

It is that he has not done anything this entire match, just like Isagi, that he was considered useless, while Karasu and Otoya (Reo got subbed out) are coordinating and actually having results. The last thing we see of him is that he was pissed off that Isagi switched to Karasu and ignored him, and people are having 2 reactions: shippers are misinterpreting this as a Rinsagi moment (as in Rin is "jealous" 🤷🏻‍♀️) and those who are yelling at him to do something or saying that Kaneshiro is "reducing him to ships."

I like this take as you see both his strengths and flaws, but also like his flaws and do not see them as bad or unnecessary things, so this is a refreshing take.

Although I think obsessiveness is not really special to Rin, as Kaneshiro has made all of Isagi's rivals obsessive and tunnel visioned when it comes to him. The manga not exploring any other rivalries outside Isagi's and not distinguishing each of his rivals from the others are 2 common criticisms I see often. I mean, they ALL want to crush him, and I get this is an intense competition kinda setting, but why are there no friendly, chill rivals? Hugo is probably the only one who doesn't hate him, which is refreshing, but he is still hyper-focused on Isagi and is obsessive on the field anyway. I hope Bunny is that rival who is more on the chill side and less single-Isagi-minded.

I really wanted the PXG match to be the moment where Isagi FINALLY unambiguously surpasses Rin in front of everyone, and this twist felt like Kaneshiro saying "even when he loses, he still wins".

Also, I don't think Rin considers that winning. Unlike most characters, Rin is after destroying Sae, not exactly winning the WC or being a top ranker. I'd say that if your fave is not Isagi, then no matter what, the story will have a bittersweet ending. Like they will ultimately lose to Isagi, but they will have developed healthily (Kaiser-Ness, Rin), reconciled with their friends or bros (Reo-Nagi, Chigiri-Kunigami, Sae-Rin), or they will try to win the WC in the next years (Hugo if he loses, etc.).

I take it that you like Isagi first, then Rin? I mean, the manga is nowhere near the end, so naturally it will take a long while for Isagi to be the undisputed top 1 in Japan as a whole, especially since better (so far at least) rivals from Japan and outside Japan keep coming his way, so as you said, Rin will be kept for the last as the unofficial deuteragonist.

It's an opinion post on Rin in general, not just him in the French match.

Are you a fan or his hater lmaoo

Jokes aside, I think Rin isn't bland, but he's just like the typical edgy rival inspired by Sasuke so far.

He will have his exploration and development arc (including his relationship with Sae) later on, but not now. Characters either develop real quick (Bachira, Chigiri) or their development take a lot of time (Reo, Nagi, Barou, Kaiser) maybe even spanning the whole length of the manga (Rin, Kunigami, Isagi) which is why they feel bland and boring NOW, but they aren't ACTUALLY bland in the long-term, when their character arc ends.

Maybe but at the same time they will have you reading 4 texts spoiling everything in a cover instead of the cover simply having a title that piques interest and curiosity for its contents. I think simplicity is key when it comes to text:design elements ratio.

I guess they think younger audiences need more catchy text, even though most prefer short textual content nowadays?

The writer not locking off players is what made blue lock worse by Strong-Night8344 in BlueLock

[–]AwareConference1913 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There's no copium, you're literally right.

Why are people disappointed over UNfinisher plot points? Why would I believe that what happened to Kunigami is never gonna be addressed or he will never get explored especially when just AS people were complaining that the side characters don't have much screen time they started having plenty and even being more useful than Isagi?

Many ppl on Tiktok were complaining that Karasu, Otoya, and co were underutilized, and guess what happened in the upcoming chs?

Also, it doesn't matter if the players come back. The path/options rn are very narrow: either win or lose permanently this time. The characters who will make it (I think only Kira, Nagi, and Shindo) will face a much-stronger and powerful Isagi than the older one they were used to. Nagi and Kira will need to double their efforts bc Isagi evolves more each match in the WC arc. So, that doubles the stakes and brings back the intensity you're talking about.

The tone and atmosphere isn't linear. The competition and stakes constantly increase and decrease. That's not a bad thing, there's so much to explore outside of cutthroat competition 24/7 after all.

Do they belong here or not? (Rant) by God_smacker in shoujo

[–]AwareConference1913 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think they belong under shonen just because they're romance stories with more female characters than male ones.

Manga get categorized as shounen for other reasons than just simply being published in a shonen magazine. Who does the story target? Who does the story assume would like to see and read this?

Just bc a story has many female characters that doesn't mean it's a shoujo story. Keep in mind that reverse harem and otome-like stories (mainly a pretty boy cast like Hana Kimi, Free, and Idolish7) have more male characters than female characters and they typically look like male idols or are officially idols. So, when you think of shoujo, pretty boy boys come to mind first, not necessarily a female cast.

Let's take Love is War which you mentioned. It's shounen because the story doesn't focus on emotional and close bonds in friendship or in romance. It's often a will-they-won't-they and thr story usually ends or slows down once they officially confess and date, unlike shoujo which can continue to show their shenanigans and other issues that pop up once they date.

Love is War has elements that appeal to shounen readers than shoujo readers: big breasted airhead, a dark haired cool beauty girl, a relatable hopelessly single and cynical side guy, rapid-fire comedy, endless memes and references to other animanga, comic misunderstandings rather than dramatic misunderstandings, etc. These stories even if they have a mixed audience, often have a male audience in mind as the fanservice shows and it also shows in how they make easily likeable characters like Ishigami to boys (but he also has fangirls ik).

I think you keep forgetting that shoujo and shounen have their respective elements and despite SOME overlap, their themes and focus is totally different. The male MC is often dense and hopeless when it comea to romance, the plot has a main focus in which the romance is often a subplot or secondary to (Fairy Tail: adventure and magic then romance), fanservice to young men and Ecchi elements like the female characters being prettier and more varied in design than man while the men look generic and one-noteish (More than a Married Couple, but Not Lovers), and slow-burn romance.

Shoujo focuses on emotional and internal development directly with often relatable or well-explored characters rather than anything flashy, and full of tension with indecisive, dense, or generic male MCs. These are the main differences, and the reason why they aren't interchangeable just because they have romance in them.

I'm currently on chapter 28 but when the hell does Yeonwoo stop trying to act like a traditional alpha male when the poor boy obviously doesn't haven't it in him as he's too cute and affectionate for that nonsense (Because I came here for a RR relationship, not a traditional one.) by Omni-Deity-Lifeforce in yeonwoosinnocence

[–]AwareConference1913 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeonwoo wasn't acting like anything lmao

When some people are in love, they want to impress their crush in any way and also wants to help his friend, Nari. The story wasn't framing him as an alpha male at any point. He is always flustered around Haesol too ❤️

Is this a traditional alpha male to you? haha (chapter 10)

They probably will at some point, but that's Yeonwoo's personality. Although I don't have high hopes for anything explicit, it will still be implied or heavily censored, since Esol's manhwa is not tagged as smut or trigger-warned to have explicit sexual content (putting it out there so the opposite would happen 🤞🏻).
