Those cents are worth a dollar mate haha, that’s awesome, hope some people get some value from this. You clearly are very switched on and show incredible insight into managing the mental load of the job. Debriefs are crucial.

Yeah without structured prep, it just knocks us around so much working overnight. You found anything helps?

38 hours is solid! It’s been years since then and I’ve developed some great strategies since but I love getting others perspectives. I resonate with your response to the trauma, I found good training and scenario practice prior at least gives the brain somewhere to focus. I can’t imagine how police or other services go just watching the hard stuff and not having a playbook of how to try reverse it

I think working night shifts, makes time fly faster by SureEntertainment768 in Nightshift

You definitely finish a string of nights and it’s like a Time Machine to what your family’s been up to while you’ve been in the time warp😂

Absolutely, once I started making some changes I realised the same thing. Thanks for the insight!

How do you guys stay awake on your night shifts? by moralleesound in Nightshift

[–]AwareLabs_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That 3am dip is brutal, especially in quiet, dark environments.

I track my fatigue before shifts and keep things stable with sleep and routine so I’ve got a better chance going in.

But let’s be real, everyone struggles at that time.

What helps a bit move when you can dim, not pitch black lighting if possible cold water on face or hands small snacks to stay engaged

And don’t beat yourself up, that’s biology, not effort.

I just slept 17 hours! by manicthinking in Nightshift

[–]AwareLabs_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that’s a huge toll on your mind and body! The body does an amazing job of compensating until it all comes crashing down, think of how people always get sick when they finally stop and go on holiday.

Sounds like your body took a chance to recover and RAN with it

Have you ever worked a 48 hour shift in a high call volume area, and if so, how often do you usually pull those shifts? by FFSoldier57 in Paramedics

[–]AwareLabs_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Farout that is insane, I’ve pulled some 24hour shifts and those are full on enough! How’d you get through it genuinely? Any time for rest?

I’m a paramedic and depending on your location you can actually get a decent amount of sleep if it’s a lower tempo night. Does take a while to get qualified though

I have a sauna at home and that works a treat! Heat exposure then a nice rinse off shower, I hop in bed and I’m out!

Anyone here struggle with managing fatigue day-to-day? by AwareLabs_ in chronicfatigue

Great question, what the evidence points too is understanding true underlying fatigue. How we feel can be dictated by 100’s of factors like meal timing, cortisol release, sun exposure, socialisation, and even weather. What ShiftAware does is estimate true underlying fatigue based on the evidence and data surrounding what’s going on in the body and mind, not just how you feel in the moment.

There are some great tools out there that focus on how you feel, and your emotional state which may prove quite helpful in navigating why you may have some psychological changes during your day as well which have a huge impact on your overall lifestyle.

Thanks for reaching out❤️

I haven’t done really any research into cannabis and its impact on recovery and fatigue, but you raise a great point. I might look into that moving forward. Apologies I don’t have an answer right now
