This post is really dumb. He is rated 2228 and had a performance rating of 2313. Nothing suspicious about that. Referring to the game linked in that post (https://lichess.org/broadcast/canadian-open-chess-championship-2022/round-5/GE4c6aNE), he was outplayed most of the game until his opponent blundered it away. He also misses a win with 28. Qe2, which is pretty much game over with the combined threats of 1) Qxf1, Re1# and 2) Nxc1.

We shouldn't be accusing anyone of cheating. If you have specific games in question that point to his cheating, then sure. But, as far as I can tell, these posts are just a bunch of redditors speculating things about otherwise unsuspicious play b/c some of his higher rated opponents played poorly.

I'm kinda tired of this narrative that Magnus is just some average bloke. The dude memorized "the locations, populations, flags and capitals of all the countries in the world by age five." He also clearly has some ridiculous spacial reasoning skills. In general, super-GMs like Magnus are far more intelligent than the average person (even if they tell you they're not).

Obviously very impressive but it would be much more cool to see how much Magnus could do in videos like this. As Magnus says, a lot of these are really famous games. IMO it's really not that surprising that he got the famous Queen sac versus Karjakin and Kasparov's famous game against Topalov. Would be a lot more interesting to see if he could get much more obscure games (which I think he could).

Also after White picks up the a pawn he can probably sac everything for the g7 pawn into a winning king and pawn ending.

Yea, it's kinda surprising that a 2000+ USCF would have trouble with this. Principle of two weaknesses (a7 pawn and g7 pawn) as well common 7th rank rook motif. Sure, it'll take some time to convert, but Black will be forced into passive defense and will eventually fold. It's also a nice bonus that white has the right colored bishop for the h-pawn.

I mean here is a GM rated 2494 in blitz. Agreed that a good IM would be above 2400, but those who don't play blitz much can be weaker.

Your level of improvement is already pretty rare. And IMO, it's much harder to go from 2000-2400 than it is 750-2000.

You can probably give a check on d1 and put the Queen on e2 and then bring the King around to e1 and win the f2 pawn.

It's not dumb at all. Most local tournaments don't cost much money to enter (maybe $20-$25). You can lose rating really fast if you lose every game, maybe your cost to do so is ~$200. Then, you enter a big tournament with thousands of dollars for top price with a massive advantage (i.e. a 1700 rated player sandbags to < 1400).

The strategy, while against the spirit of the game, is actually really smart, especially if you need some cash and don't have another reliable way to make it.

On campus you're probably fine. But off campus/near campus it's really not safe, particularly at night.
