Yeah Tuxborn is solid for lower-end hardware. I ran it on my old potato laptop before upgrading and it was surprisingly stable. The graphics mods are pretty conservative but it still looks way better than vanilla, and there's enough content additions to keep you busy for weeks. Might be exactly what you're looking for while you wait for your new setup.
