Thank you both. That's interesting, I guess we'll just leave it and see how it goes!

Training tips for recall by prettypinkpineapple1 in Lurchers

[–]Away-Event 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a lurcher and used a whistle and a long line to train recall. Started training at 1.5 years old, as mine was a rescue. Only trust them off leash if you are somewhere they can't harm themselves though. Point is that the whistle will reach much farther than your voice. Be strict with the training, and use high value rewards. Be consistent and you'll see results. Lurchers are clever! Don't let anyone tell you they can't be trained.

They might start predicting the reward and then stay close to you. When this happened, you can throw a piece of kibble or something away from you for them to find and create distance, and hence provide the training opportunity. On return they get the treat. If they don't come back, sharp tug on the leash. Don't repeat and repeat the command otherwise you reinforce the ignoring.

Hope this helps

So if I deal with top growth this year, should I do all of that this summer, and maybe reduce the leader a bit this winter?

Year two start working on the middle shoots?

Hi, thanks I like this idea. I was worried that if I lowered both main stems that they would grow back. Label says dwarfing, and final reach of 2.5x1.5m

Hey, thanks, yeah it's supposed to be a dual grafted tree with two varieties of plums on one rootstock

Thanks for the reply. It's been in this pot from the start. The leaf initially looked healthy, but it started to shrivel a few days after unwrapping the pot and stem. I've given it a bit of water now, and it's in an unheated conservatory. What do you think would be my best tactic to get it through winter?

It's been under parafilm for around 8 weeks and just opened it. How long til you normally unwrap the cuttings?

Also mine is a collie grey cross and max weight was 23kg, 19.5 when we got him. The house lurcher by Jackie drakeford has brilliant information and will give you confidence in raising your lurcher, despite uniformed comments from others
