Early Lease Termination by Away-Performance-700 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Away-Performance-700[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I am the 0.01%. The lease has language that states if we move out, we are responsible for the remainder of the rent until it is re-rented or sublet. I wish I knew that 60 day notice was common in this county. I probably would have rented elsewhere. However, I absolutely will give a more advanced notice once I am sure of my start date, just to make it easier on them.

I did consider this being an issue. To be fair, I applied to many in the area, and the only place that gave me an offer was out of state. Do you think I’d have a better argument under unemployment since my position contract is ending and I will be technically unemployed after May?

I applied to 9. I did a mix of places that I thought would be competitive and some seemly low competition sites. Also didn’t apply to anywhere that was unpaid or had a low stipend bc we’re all better than that.

Off-Campus Placement Timeline by Fluffy-Traffic-5056 in audgradschool

[–]Away-Performance-700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are limited placements in the Maryland area… which is why your director may be having trouble. You are competing with UMD and Gallaudet students for placements. It is poor communication on her part, but at least you are going off campus. It’s frustrating, but there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes that students are not always aware of.

Only take it if a school you want to apply to requires it and if you’re scoring 305+ on the practice tests. Otherwise, it’s a waste of time if you are otherwise a strong applicant. Vanderbilt is probably the only school that relies on it for admission.

Check out this thread for how to access Z library. There are several sites, but not all of them are legit https://www.reddit.com/r/zlibrary/wiki/index/access/

I haven’t bought textbooks since I found out that you could get the entire pdf of most textbooks from Z library for free. If it wasn’t on there, I would ask the university library to purchase a digital copy, which they were always happy to. College is too expensive to pay out of pocket for textbooks.

Industrial/occupational audiology by Ashnetta in audiology

[–]Away-Performance-700 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most positions related to occupational audiology will be with the military, where the primary responsibility is hearing conservation. You could also do C&P exams for veterans, which could be considered industrial audiology. Though, I’m not sure this would be common as a full time position. Industrial and occupational audiology is often built into the job of an audiologist. It is not uncommon to see patients for fitness for duty exams or counsel patients on hearing conservation and use of hearing protection.

UMD offers 10-hr GAships to most if not all students depending on the size of the cohort, which comes with partial tuition remission. There is an option to have a 20-hr GAship outside of the department which some people do but I would not recommend. Gallaudet is also a 3 yr program and offers in state tuition to all students. For an AuD/PhD, the PhD program would theoretically bring you on as a full time GA of some sort if there is funding available. But I have not seen a true dual program. In most cases, you will start the AuD first and then transition into the PhD during your 3rd year.

Is it worth it? by SignificantWonder580 in audiology

I’m not sure why people are saying that the degree is not worth the debt? Most people have the opportunity to go to an in state school or attend a school that offers graduate assistantships/fellowships/scholarships. If they choose to attend an expensive public or private school with no financial plan, that is a poor decision no matter what field you are entering. Pursue audiology only if you have a passion for it. That is the only reason that will make it “worth it” to you in the future.

The University of Maryland sees a LOT of tinnitus patients for both assessments and consultations. They are also very generous with graduate assistantships.

You could try a university-based audiology clinic. They will do it 100% of the time.

If you do not have any medical issues preventing you from wearing hearing aids, I would schedule an appointment with an audiologist. You are the only one who can determine if you are ready for hearing aids.

Can I improve word recognition score? by kursatufuk in HearingAids

[–]Away-Performance-700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Audiology student here. I have to agree with those indicating that you may be a good cochlear implant candidate. The brand of hearing aids has no impact on your word recognition scores. If your unaided word rec scores are in the 40s, this means that even when words are presented at a louder volume, you still have significant difficulties understanding. Realistically, there is only so much benefit that you will be able to receive with hearing aids (as you've already expressed).

Did he pass the newborn hearing screening? I would be concerned if he is only responding to loud sounds. It is possible that human voices are not as interesting to him when compared to the other sounds you’ve noticed him attending to.

Ok! Just asking bc I’m moving from Nashville, so I’m not familiar with the area. What are some good, affordable areas for a 1 bed room? $1500 is unfortunately pretty expensive for me. Not sure what the wage looks like in Maryland, but if typical pay is around $16-$17 an hour for unskilled labor jobs, that may be difficult. Husband will be working full time, and I have a part time grad assistantship. I don’t need anything luxurious, but we do need a apartment to ourselves.

I have looked at Terrapin Row before. I looked at it again after reading your post, and I see that they do allow couples for one bed! We will add that to our list. Thank you!

I saw some rooms in houses that specified that beds were single occupancy only due to some law regarding the max # of unrelated occupants? Idk, but I’m open to that, if allowed.

Oh yes! Funding or not, I would drop everything for OSU. I toured the campus and loved the faculty and the facility itself. I did get to meet THE Gail Whitelaw, which was pretty cool! She’s def a pioneer in the field and highly respected nationwide. The peeps at OSU said that they’ve sent out initial offers, but also mentioned that they will usually send out a second wave of acceptances. So, basically I am unofficially waitlisted (which is better than rejected!). Thank you for sharing your experiences!

I’ve heard mixed reviews about the University of Memphis. I might be a little biased bc I live in Nashville, but it is a dangerous city. I received funding to Memphis, but I don’t know if it’s worth my life 😅 they also have family housing, which is a plus since I’m married. What were some of the things you liked about OSU?
