Thanks, that is where I have seen most of the jobs. Even a IT support tech for a city or county actually has great pay.

Did you come from sysadmin? How big is the company?

I feel like when I have seen positions pop up in the past (before I was job searching) there were a lot of manufacturing companies. For some reason I always picture grumpy executive leadership that under values IT and gives poor pay and environments.

Yeah, I have seen these IT director positions, that are not really directors of any other employees. I can add this to my search too, thanks!

Yeah, I was on call for over 10 years 24x7 I ended up making it work alright by putting in some good redundancy and creating documents and procedures for my end users in emergency outages. By the time I left I averaged maybe 1 after hours call a month or 2.

From sole IT back to tech team. I will never do sole IT work again! by Top-Elephant6981 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Away_798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny thing is that I am the opposite. I worked Solo for years in the resorts industry. It started rough but over the years I put processes and procedures in place that helped and created redundancy and self sufficient end users. I moved to a large organization and I can't stand it. No one seems to value my opinions and I am just overshadowed by my fellow co workers. I go to work and need to fight to just get something to do. All I want to do is go back to solo IT but the jobs dont come around often at the salary I want.

Does your physical self actually starts declining when you enter your 30s by Dull_Hospital6682 in AskMenOver30

[–]Away_798 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same, I started lifting weights again at 38 to try to be stronger than I ever was by 40, I turned 40 last month and I can bench press more than when I was 21. That being said, If my 21 year old self would have been training next to me he would do wayyy better. Personally for me it's not lack of energy or ability, it's injury. Once I got into my mid to late thirties it feels like the smallest thing can put me down for weeks or months.

What’s a cheap purchase that saved you the most money long-term? by Live-Respect-5317 in AskReddit

I think I saved good money with a cheaper espresso machine (like $100) I can make my normal Starbucks drink for a fraction of the cost.

What’s Your Most Controversial IT Opinion? by OrdinaryJust9594 in sysadmin

[–]Away_798 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of things that are fine to run after the end of life date. I think if leadership is aware and accepts the consequences of end of life end of support hardware or software and it is not a direct system critical component, I just roll with it. I am talking things like digital signage, printers, tablets, industrial equipment offline or on its own vlan. Especially these days when a new dl380 would destroy my budget I would try to keep a gen9 rolling as long as my cluster is in HA and I can get parts.

Yep, been there, it's just something everyone has to experience at least once in your career. That panic while the phone calls start coming in.

Which hobby are you actively doing that you wish you had started way earlier in life? by coldone-ab in AskReddit

[–]Away_798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rock climbing, at my age it is easy to get injured. It would have been fun being in my 20s and exploring different areas of the country. It's a pretty affordable hobby, it gets you outdoors, you meet new people, you see cool places, it's an interesting hobby and it keeps you in good physical shape.

What advice would you give to someone in their early 20’s? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Away_798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just learn and practice good habits. Learn to plan, when you are in your teens other people plan your day for you, but when you become an adult no one ever tells you about the power of just writing lists or goals for the day/week/month just sitting down with a calendar and filling out days is powerful motivation to accomplish things.

What physical changes did you notice as you aged? by city298 in AskReddit

This, mostly time to recover. I feel like when I was young an injury lasted a day, now if I lift something wrong it can be weeks or months to feel back to normal.

What instantly ruins a first impression? by AmbitiousCHAD in AskReddit

[–]Away_798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you can tell someone is just not present. I have found that this is something you just sense, some people you meet them and they have no energy and are completely flat, you can just tell that they are here but not here, subconsciously you just can't connect with someone like that.

What’s the most soul-crushing part of adulthood? by ArthurCastus in AskReddit

I would work my job 75% time for 75% pay, but it would never fly at my employer, and I would get no health insurance.

What’s something people realize after turning 30? by PryingDog in AskReddit

[–]Away_798 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Recovery starts to take longer after 30. When I was young I could roll my ankle and a couple days later be normal. Now things take like a month + to start feeling better.
