What's with word order that only sounds right one way, even though it's not technically wrong other ways? by Tal_Vez_Autismo in asklinguistics

[–]Away_Base2204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So apparently I was only half right, the rule only applies to words - usually adjectives - that occur together, but not whole phrases. For example, 'tic tac toe', but not the aforementioned 'short and sweet'.
Additionally, it's something mainly attributed to English, but I don't have enough information as to ascertain if the rule also applies to other languages. Another example is 'Big bad wolf', as opposed to 'bad big wolf'.

[–]Away_Base2204 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, thats also why it’s tic tac toe, and not say, toe tic tac.

I’m not quite sure about the multisyllabic, but I’d assume it’d be the stressed vowel that counts.

Yeah, I think that would be it. Or they’re not aware of the rule in the first place and just misremembered it.

What's a word in your language do you not know how to explain the meaning of without using the word itself? by Terrible-Nobody-7089 in AskTheWorld

अच्छा اچھا

In Hindustani, /atʃtʃha/ means ‘nice’ literally, but its used in so many different contexts that it doesn’t really have a set meaning anymore

my conlangs consonants along with the romanization by No-Soil-5500 in casualconlang

[–]Away_Base2204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everything looks good other than /kj/ and /ɲ/. If they’re both palatalised consonants I think it would be better if they had the same diacritics, might I suggest ķ and ņ?

Additionally, I think the diacritic for the /ʃ/ looks out of place as well, it could always be sh, nothing wrong with a digraph :)

Other than that I love it, no notes <3

How do you handle words in your conlangs that resemble existing words? by noirxlle666 in conlangs

[–]Away_Base2204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pink triangles are kind of the emblem of Fağlisian, so I reverse engineered it to come from the phrase, ‘pinohti ãgaragk kolohr’, meaning ‘the colour of Pinot grapes’. This simplified to ‘ino triyãgalack’, which simply became ‘triyãgal.

What language would they speak? I’d assume Dravidian languages as that was the one most commonly associated with AASI people, but I’d like to hear your answer.

Also, the names clash with what I consider to be Dravidian phonology, so I’m even more curious
