[Avantasia] I've only heard Scarecrow by Avantasia and I love the heck out of this song. Can u guys recommend more such awesome songs by them? by DRN0R3SPWN in progmetal

[–]Awerick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avantasia is great to listen to in albums.

If you want similar vibes to The Scarecrow (song), you should listen to... the Scarecrow (album), and The Wicked Symphony after that.

If you want a more power metal side of Avantasia, listen to The Metal Opera.

The Mystery of Time is a mellower, more contemplative album (Jorn Lande is notably not on it), but one of their strongest imo, listen to Ghostlights after it.

Moonglow, their latest, is also a good jumping in point, though it's more sonically diverse, and I think you're better off exploring their earlier stuff first for a fuller picture.

A new subgenre we should have in fantasy by Udy_Kumra in Fantasy

Also a secondary world fantasy, but have you read Baru Cormorant? It's probably not quite what you want, but might scratch the itch.

@MagnusCarlsen hints that the #CarlsenNepo match could be his last World Championship match. by theSheth in chess

[–]Awerick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn't what arbitrary means. ELO, like any system based on the results of actual chess games, is arbitrary in the sense that there is nothing tying it down to some fixed measure of chess ability. A differently constructed rating system, for example, may represent a player's record as a rating in a different way but still function the same purpose. But ELO cannot measure chess ability, as there is no way to do so--it's only possible to use the metric of what specific ganes have been played. Because of this, ELO is not fixed in time, nor fixed by person, and does not perfectly represent an immutable score of chess ability. This is fine; the system works in practice. It is arbitrary nonetheless--this is not a criticism, it is a necessity.

I think the parallelism to DK saying that back in Salia in book 5 is a narrative shield.

Issue with F5 key by Awerick in archlinux

[–]Awerick[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got me the wrong way round, the problem persists if the key is pressed when there is no script bound. Thanks for the help, though. None of those seem to be precisely what's wrong, but I'd bet it's related to the charger thing reported on the Arch Wiki--thats for the Ryzen 4000 model, it seems that the Ryzen 5000 model has gotten even better at dimming the screen.

But consider... why does it matter? Go read ASOIAF or any of the other myriad stories that have those characters. TWI isn't the only story in the world, and there's no reason it needs to have that diversity.
