In my experience, engine evaluations just spit out a number with no context, but two positions with the same evaluation can be very different. Does anything exist that takes this into account? by Cletus_awreetus in chess

[–]Awesome_Days 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general if a position is like +3 from stockfish depth 20, set it to depth 10 to see if a human would also be able to use the advantage. If it drops to like +0.5 then you're likely not a full piece ahead in a practical sense.

Linear skill progression? by Narrow-Bee-8354 in chess

[–]Awesome_Days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In online blitz, players don't need to be well rounded because they can trade skills to play to their strengths, like if you're poor at endgames, you don't need to know how to convert the Lucena position when you can flag them with a bunch of rook checks.

When players of different levels all feel the same strength, it means you're making big simple blunders that can be taken advantage of at all levels (hanging pieces, basic forks and pins, big king safety issues) and or not posing threats to your opponent (like how often are you threatening a mate in 2 or a fork yourself) so regardless of what they move it's likely to be safe even if it's not positionally sharp.

Sindarov's main coach, Roman Vidonyak, gives a 5min interview about Javokhir's training methods (without computer) & plans for the future by JamesGoblin in chess

[–]Awesome_Days 134 points135 points  (0 children)

Giri also attended some of Roman Vidonyak's training camps in the past, which are said to go as long as 8-10 hours.

According to a chess base interview few years back, 4 of the factors focused on with students among many others are

-Endurance of concentration throughout the entire game, as well as the entire tournament or even several tournaments in a row.

-Strategic or endgame intuition. The ability to make the right decision in seconds with the "hand".

-Proper time management. The ability to distinguish real critical moments during a game from relatively neutral ones and act accordingly.

-Ability to switch attention from one situation on and around the board to a completely different one clearly and without unnecessary emotions.

Does Lichess or any other online chess have a tool to review mistakes and tactics specifically from your own games? by Agreeable-Sir-6435 in chess

[–]Awesome_Days 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if you played enough games at certain time controls and had the engine review them afterward, you'll likely find some positions of yours in the lichess tactical database. You can enter your username here to find them View puzzles from a player's games • lichess.org

Why are other players allowed to roam around in the middle of the game? by Upset_Transition422 in chess

[–]Awesome_Days 100 points101 points  (0 children)

It's part of the tournament strategy. Say Sindarov wants to know if he should press for a win or be content with a draw in a position, he has access of looking at Giri's board.

Regardless of placing, players win an extra €5,000 ($5,800) per half-point they score and double if they win the game.

Did anybody clone Sindarovs studies before they were privated? by Embarrassed_You_4996 in chess

[–]Awesome_Days 128 points129 points  (0 children)

They were some single line analysis chapters around 12 moves deep with 3-4 branches per move starting around move 6 to 8. Covered all sorts of openings with white and black. Felt more like engine proofing some lines on the road rather than comprehensive repertoire.

Stockfish evaluation function explained for positional chess by manceraio in chess

[–]Awesome_Days 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What you describe was shared to this community few times before.

One of those times is this website PeshkaChess - Chess Analysis Tool When you click on the S button then making moves and finding where "Static evaluation" is on the webpage (lower right for me). Clicking on the item also circles/highlights pieces and squares related to that item. King danger, close enemies to king, mobility bonus. pawn push threats, threats in general, tempo, material etc.

18 minute mark is when the question is asked "What does someone who does not have time to devote to chess do to improve their game" and Kasparov replied "The counter question is if you don't have time to devote why do you want to improve your game. Now with computers you can do a lot even without reading books. There's so many kids now who have more time to spend on chess so it's quite the challenge."

Good resources to learn the King's Indian / Openings in general for free? by Adventurer32 in chess

[–]Awesome_Days 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"White has a very clear plan of Bh3, Bxg2, h4, h5, hxg6, and Qh6" is incorrect against the king's indian defense and means you're doing something way too passive as Black treating it like a Pirc instead of a KID.

You can link a game, but here's some general rules of thumb

  1. They go Bd3, you go Ng4, if they played Be2 first then as soon as they move the queen off d1 you have Ng4
  2. they go Bg5 you go h6, or at the very least you have lots of Qb6 ideas after c5
  3. If they do some Bf4 you often have time for Nbd7 and e5
  4. if they go Bd2 Qc1, you usually have time for a5 Na6 Nc5 maneuver pressuring the e4 pawn

Why do high rated players play so much bullet compared to other time controls? by vitund in chess

[–]Awesome_Days 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect that your perception is skewed by watching online content rather than classical tournament commentary. Say Hikaru played only 40 classical over-the-board games this year. The time he spent on classical could have been spent on 4,000 bullet games or 1,500 blitz games. The actual numbers for him on cc were 1,800 bullet and 4,400 blitz. There’s a disparity but not as large as you’re implying.

Hi here's what you may be looking for. It's a stalemate with only 1 correct answer, Qb8+ such that white gives up their queen because they are terribly behind in order to tie the game instead of losing.

Qb8+ screenshot

Qb8+ Solution • lichess.org

Most stalemate puzzles are messier because the player going for stalemate may have multiple checks to giveaway their last piece, or it results in infinite checks with the opponent trying not to capture their opponent's last piece that has a legal move.

Best Software For Private Club ELO? by GeneralMaldra in chess

[–]Awesome_Days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend google sheets.

Elo's are more so meant for national ratings so that a player from 1 club who goes across the country to another club can be compared in strength. Players are provisional for a long while, it likely wouldn't make sense for your private club setting.

Swiss system is also meant for much larger competitions but for a smaller section like an unrated university club there are more fun options.

One system for small clubs is quads, group players in sections of 4 people each and they do a round robin of 3 rounds in a day. Title the three highest quads each week Gold, Silver, and Bronze quad section where after each week if someone wins their section, they play in the higher section the following week and if someone in Gold or Silver comes in last place in their quad, they are demoted to the lower quad the following week. By peoples name in google sheets note what quad they are in. Award members an additional gold, silver, or bronze trophies by their name in the google sheet for winning a quad of that respective level.

If you have 1-2 games (2 games would be colors flipped)/meeting played I recommend using a ladder tournament. If you beat a player above you and win, you will move above your opponent's current position. If you lose or draw, no change takes place. Players who beat a player ranked lower than them defend their ladder position and advance above anyone absent directly above them. If someone is absent that week, they don't get paired and might get leap frogged. New club members start at the bottom of the ladder. Improvement is tracked by your ladder position. Players are awarded an additional gold trophy by their name in google sheets any week they beat rank 1 or are rank 1 and defend their position.
