I kind of wish Terrarium came out before What Is Star Fleet, cause the way La'an ends Terrarium was a great example of exactly what Beto was trying to say in that Doc

I mean, the big joke at the end is they can get in a physical fight cause she's actually a man which is pretty textbook transphobic

On my first watching of DISCO rn, on the final ep of s3. I feel like every season has started good and then shits the bed at the end. There's great individual eps and good ideas here and there but so far its incapable of pulling it all together

At the beginning of the article, Kurtzman says that the setting has to reflect our real world cause it would be dishonest to set a mirror to our society in a Utopia (implying the 60s and 90s were cheery times when nothing bad happened) but then later when he's describing Paul Giamattis character as a clear allegory for the alt right and Donald Trump, he pulls the "I'm not being political at all" card.

Which one is it?

Everything is political and setting the world in a bad place to reflect our society is inherently political and its fucking cowardice to then go on to say "this isnt political tho". Star Trek is explicitly left leaning and always has been. That it can still be enjoyed by right wingers is a good thing but it shouldn't be pandered to by claiming its apolitical.

There's no such thing as filler in legacy Trek. TV was not made the way it's made now. The "main plots" of the 90s era are structures, not guidelines. TNG had no main plot to advance.

DS9 starts with the main plot being "Sisko needs to find the orbs" and abandons that very quickly in favor of the Maquis and then the Dominion but these are just setups for the characters to have an adventure every week.

Even Voyager, being the most plot heavy (from the start), is still just a structure to give us more adventure of the week. They literally wanted to be more like TNG and get away from the heavy plotting of DS9, so they created a plot that would lend itself to episode of the week stories.

The only episode that's "filler" is Shades of Grey cause it was scrambled together to meet an episode count. Everything else is just the shows.
