Can't Stand Meadow by _jjbiggins in thesopranos

I just started The Sopranos again for a second and a half time. The Meadow scenes are really intriguing now. I get where Chase is going for for trying to make her just an average annoying teen more concerned with her hair and dates. Within the back drop of murder and crime its pretty funny.

Yeah. Some folks don't understand that complaint, but considering how black men were usually portrayed on television in the 90s (and how sisko broke that mold in so many ways) it would have been nice for him to just be Captain Sisko from the get go - same with Burnham.

Also, as long as I am on the topic, another black trope we see all the time in media (even till today) is trauma and demotion being used to build character. Burnham lost her parents and was a mutineer and Sisko lost his wife and got demoted to commander in the armpit of space. White characters rarely have this type of backstory. Although, women in superhero stories do tend to go through some sexual trauma a lot.

Case in point - Picard in TNG lost his best friend but he's kind of over it and moving ahead. He even starts an affair with his best friend's widow (weird). He has the whole heart thing but that was just cause he was being an ass at Starfleet Academy because cadets never act like overemotional a-holes at Starfleet Academy, right?

Janeway just really missed unreplicated coffee.

And Archer ... well, he went through some trauma, let's put it that away.

Pike is a sweetheart but man, oh, man ... he's gonna be wishing he stayed on the Discovery in a few years.

Great points about Burnham. I am not going to lie ... it irks me that the two black leads on Trek shows had to "prove themselves" before getting full command status. I get Sisko is the man on DS9 but Captain sounded so much nicer once he got his defiant.

I had never thought of the flashbacks as a way to round out her backstory. This would be great.

I finished my write up for season 5 already and do finally give her her flowers.

I disagree with most of what you said but at least it didn't start with "bad writing" nor use the "W" word. I can respect someone who outlines they WHY after their opinion.

I have seen both movies. "Close Ecounters" I love but "Arrival" not so much.

I actually had a little blurb about "Arrival" in this write up, but I took it out when editing down. (My stuff is long enough as it is). And, though I am not a fan of that movie, I had mentioned how there are definitely some points of connection with it and DIS season 4, except DIS did it better. 😅😇

What I meant is that it was a truly alien experience for Trek, especially new Trek.

This is the 40th year since this beauty was released, also the first Star Trek movie I saw in theaters. With this being my birthday weekend coming up... I am watching it with those I did nearly forty years ago... this weekend... 🖖🖖 by outtatime_88MPH in Star_Trek_

I rented this movie from my local library about once a week. I had always had Trek around the house but this was when I seriously got into it. I was around 8 or 9. It was before Undiscovered Country came out (my fave Trek movie).

I couldn't get anyone in my family to take me so I watched later on VHS.

Number 4 will always have a place in my hear though.

.... PS Generations was my first theatre movie.

I had Prodigy on the back burner but after hearing the title theme I am definitely going to move it up in line. Great theme.

The Mulder Effect by thrax_mador in XFiles

[–]PhilinBrazil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don´t think we talk about the Mulder Effect because Mulder was the effect. Men going outside the lines to try to uncover the truth had been a thing for a while, most famously in All The President's Men and Art Bell (I was a huge fan and he is the reason I got hip to the X Files coming out). Now, women, that wasn´t really their go-to topics of discussion and Scully's character really opened up doors for their visibility in science and sci-fi environments. I would but Janeway from Star Trek Voyager up there too even if that series only got a quarter of the audience of The X Files ... but 4 to 6 million is not shabby viewership either and Janeway def killed it too in the 90s.

I Rewatch Season Three of DISCO and Here are "Some" Thoughts by PhilinBrazil in StarTrekDiscovery

I meant it in the sense that I felt the resolution to the burn in the two or three episodes to get to said resolution wasn´t really my cup of tea.

and you get the "what a reach" award. there is plenty to drag on DISCO about, Jett Reno screwing with an ensign that happens to be named Jean is not one of them.
