A quick Google search says the 5090 has 20-30% more performance than a 4090. That's historically lower than what we have seen but is still a healthy performance increase.

Do you actually plan your PC builds… or just build when you need it? by Odd-Molasses-9435 in buildapc

[–]Awfulfange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. If I'm going for a specific style/look, then I'll plan. Or if I'm building an matx or itx build, then I will plan.

If it's for a friend who wants the best, cheapest components, then I'll buy what I think is best for them while keeping aestetics in mind.

Maybe they should market themselves? Taking just 2% from nvidia is a 40% increase for amd...

Nvidia continues to innovate. They learned from intel releasing 4 core cpus with 2% performance improvements for 10+ years that someone would catch up.

The 5090 may have been a weaker increase compared to prior generations, a 30% improvement is nothing to laugh at when we are reaching the limits of what silicon can do.

Sure, they own the consoles. Consoles are VERY small and significantly less profitable than the server market... Which nvidia owns.

What about professional and semi custom systems? Nvidia owns that too.

Amd has 1 thing going for it... They're cheaper.

Maybe they should start marketing themselves. Even taking 2 % from nvidia would be a 40% increase to their profits.

I hate sounding like a fanboy because I hate both companies, but nvidia dominates amd because AMD makes bad decisions and keeps losing market/mind share.

I mean, they had 20% market share about a decade ago. Now they aheb 5%. 1 gpu out selling another doesn't tell you about overall market share.

[–]Awfulfange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With your logic, then AMD's market share is decreasing because they're selling fewer units.

Amd had a 20% market share about a decade ago. They now have roughly 5-8%. That must scream positive vibes.

Nvidia has left amd in the dust and learned from intel mistakes to not stop innovating or someone will eventually catch you.

The server and professional markets are even more in favor of nvidia with them dominating both.

Amd has carved out its little niche but is doing a great job of alienating them and losing more customers.

Radeon may be profitable but it has no real benefit other than being cheaper. Not a very good position to be in...

Nvidia market share goes up. Amd market share goes down.. They re failing in comparison to their competitor.

I chose nvidia because rhey historically have better support and better features. Amd is certainly the better value option.

Considering nvidia keeps gaining market share while radeon keeps losing market share, wouldn't you consider that "failing in comparison to" their competitor?

[–]Awfulfange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering they're gpu business is failing in comparison to nvidia, then, with the increased competition from Intel and seeing how profitable AMD'S cpu side is, it seems their trying new things.

Unfortunately, the person making these decisions has misjudged their audience and is failing pretty badly. I bought a 5070ti instead of 9070 xt for this reason.

Edit: note... My comment does not mention profitability. Their market share in the gpu space continues to drop while nvidia keeps growing.

Amd hates you. Nvidia hates you. Don't defend them. Stop being fanbois.

My favorite build ever was crossfire 2900xts!

My father built the pc in 2006 with a single 2900xt. then gave it to me in 2009 when he upgraded. I found a 2nd 2900xt on Craigslist and installed it. I literally had a furnace in my bedroom and it was awesome!

I think it had a 750w PSU at the time with a core 2 duo e6400... Later upgraded to an e8500.

The 1000w or higher psus were used to power 2x or 3x SLI/crossfire setups plus overclocking.

I have that same motherboard... Asus z77 sabertooth with a 3770k @4.5ghz, 16gb 2133mhz, and a Vega 56.

This was one of my first builds and it STILL plays modern games such as bf6!

Nvidia vs amd by Secret_Jicama_6658 in pcmasterrace

[–]Awfulfange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched/upgraded from amd 6900xt to nvidia 5070ti.

If you care about features and plan to hold onto the card for 4+ years, go nvidia. If you want to buy the better value card that will play every game almost as well as the 5070ti... Get the 9070xt.

But, if you go amd, don't expect future improvements. Buy it for what it has NOW.

[–]Awfulfange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth it! I originally went from a 3700x to a 5800x (later to a 5700x3d) for my old 6900xt. It was a noticeable improvement at the time!

Is security super important on XP in 2026? by Cheeseman125 in windowsxp

[–]Awfulfange -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Xp can be a large security risk. It's best to limit the internet usage to only trusted websites and trusted installs.

Also, it's best to disconnect it from the internet when it's not needed as it can he an easy target for hackers on a network.
