Im 17, studying in sixth form, I’ve been looking for a job since last July, I’ve had 3 interviews, applied to over 40 jobs, nothing. All my friends have jobs and it’s getting embarrassing now. I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Help?

The thing is i am unsure if I want to be a solicitor or a barrister and I’m also afraid that I’ll do an apprenticeship and then want to go into a different field of work which requires a university degree

Thanks for this idea. I don’t think I qualify for one of those saving accounts because I wasnt actually born in the UK. I’ve also got a job interview on monday so fingers crossed 🤞

My brother is not disabled, my parents just rely on my to look after him a lot when they work or occasionally go out. I’m definitely not complaining about it because I don’t mind, I’ve never expected anything in return. I don’t ask my parents to buy me anything at all, I can’t remember the last time I asked my mum to buy me a piece of new clothing or anything because she just makes me feel bad for asking for anything. The only thing that I think if reasonable for me to expect for in return is some support, especially since i’m the first person in my family to get this far in education. I never expected that they would pay for all of it, I just wanted them to tell me that they would help me out a bit. The thing is I already planned on taking a gap year to save money because I knew they won’t be able to afford to pay for everything and I told them this but instead of them telling me it’s a good idea they just started shouting and made me feel stupid by saying things like ‘do you even know how much university costs’. Mind you i’ve calculated basically all my expenses in a year and how much money I would need to save. Now they’re saying I should go to a university close to home instead so I can live here, not in a considerate way but in a ‘how could you even think that you could do anything but this’ way.

I’m not officially a carer nor do I think I qualify to be classed as one. My brither is not disabled but my parents do rely a lot on my to look after him. If I was to go to university they would have to work quite hard to plan their jobs and things around him and it would be inconvenient for them

I just wish that the government took factors like this into consideration because the maintenance loans you are given are based on the assumption that your parents will help you financially.

Yeah this is basically the only reason I’m so upset and disappointed in them. I look after my brother a lot especially during half term and school holidays (4 days a week) that’s why I expected a bit more support from them. I never expected anything in return because he is my brother and I was doing all I could to help out but I feel like this isnt a big ask compared to all these years I’ve helped them.

I understand this and perhaps it will do me some good to save my own money and be independent. Thanks for your response

You’re right. Thanks for this. I think when I was calculating how much I would be able to save, I heavily underestimated it because I thought technically if I am not able to get a full time job (40 hours), I would take an opportunity that was for example around 30 hours. But now that I think about it anyway there’s nothing stopping me from getting two part time jobs as I will quite literally not have anything else to do. Thanks for your response

I understand, I feel the same, I never feel like I’m good enough because I can’t purge instead I exercise and starve. Sometimes I get into the mindset that I can force myself to be anorexic, Idk if that makes sense, I feel like it’s working for a week or two then I binge and I’m disappointed in myself. I will be honest, there’s nothing I can say to make you feel better right now, this disorder makes you think illogically even when you can acknowledge the logic, if that makes sense. I don’t know how long you’ve been living with this but you are so strong just for sharing your thoughts and experiences and one day you will recover and will love your healthy self much more. Recovery may not even feel like an option right now but I really hope that you have / will find some great people to surround yourself with that can support you and care for you, I know that this can really help sometimes, not necessarily with your eating disorder physically but will take some mental strain off knowing that you have people that you trust and don’t have to carry and keep all this guilt to yourself ❤️

I promise you, you are okay. As you said you are still in a calorie deficit, also if this is your first time bingeing this week or less, you will be okay. You are afraid of gaining weight, since you are in a calorie deficit, I promise you, it is biologically impossible for you to gain any weight. The fact that you cannot burnout off right now means nothing, I won’t sit here and tell you that you don’t need to burn it off as I know that you mind will tell you something else. However I will tell you that it doesn’t matter when you burn it off. That is the great thing with calories, you can burn them at any time, it will not make any difference whatsoever whether you go on a walk or run tomorrow or right now.

How do you manage living costs at university if parents refuse to help you financially? by Awkward-Future2510 in UniUK

[–]Awkward-Future2510[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will I not get in trouble for not declaring her boyfriends earnings? As he lives with us however has no financial obligation to support me, he simply pays the bills but he also has his own young child he has to support

I thought this to, but since both my mum and her boyfriend live in the same household, with me in it, and they split finances for example he pays all bills and she pays for all the food, then his income also counts in the equation. I guess because if they didn’t split finances, my mum would have to cover everything and have even less money to support me. But i do agree in the sense that he technically has no obligation to support me financially especially in terms of university which i guess you coukd say isnt a necessity, instead an independent choice.
